I bought one of those sunburst Firebirds last November for $650 USD. I just checked and they're still the same price. I really like it because the Firebird has it's own sound, and Epiphone captured that pretty well at that price. I'd planned on putting in some "real" Gibson Firebird pickups but after playing it, I'm fine with the ones that came in it. They aren't just repurposed mini humbuckers, they're unique. If you're looking for that 1970-era Johnny Winter sound, this will get you there. If you already have a Les Paul, SG, ES-335, Strat and Tele, well you gotta round out your collection with a 'bird. And if you don't want to spend $6,500 on a Gibson, or $1,200+ for one of the "high end Epi" models, this is the way to go. You did a nice job on the respray/relic, always loved Pelham Blue since my dad had a 1964 Chevy Impala that color, we drove that thing all over the country back in those days. Anyway, nice video, good entertainment on a Sunday morning. Thanks and take care.

Cheers mate, much appreciated. I agree on the uniqueness of the pickups, very different to a humbucker, i was glad to see they were firebird specific, they are a huge part of what makes a firebird sing. I love me an impala as well! Chevy was doing everything right in that era... I drive my 67 a couple times a week.

Interesting. Just saved me a ton of time if I plan to try something similar. I would have given it a scuff sand, then primer, then top coat, then clear coat. Oh wait, disregard, that's what I would still do! But it looks like your method worked for you. And that's all that matters. 🤗🤔😉

I did think about stripping all the poly off but would have defeated the purpose just to put another one down underneath (plus I couldn't be bothered haha)

Stumbled on your vid and it’s like you read my mind 😂 Basically same as you I wanted to get the new Firebird V but 3 grand for an Epi when you can basically get a Gibson SG for the same price. So I have been trying to get my hands on one of these with the same idea to paint it myself. This video has inspired me to make it happen. Probably won’t go down the relic route but some kind of colour pop is much nicer than brown sunburst. One question - did you just give it a wet sand to scuff up the poly finish before painting or did you use some paint remover as well?
@carsandguitars8 ай бұрын
cheers mate, great minds think alike! haha. I just gave the poly a light scuff and a good clean with grease and wax remover to get off any residual polish. If I was doing a straight up refin and not doing the relic thing i'd strip the poly off. Ive had good success in the past using a heat gun and paint scraper, it's way tidier and cleaner than using paint stripper or something similar.

Johnny Winter made Firebirds cool playing them live in 1970's. He was a great live guitarist, the kind of guy other guitarists always went to see. He gave Firebirds an identity, like Jimmy Page and Les Pauls. He wasn't the only guy to play one, but Johnny and Firebirds were synonymous amongst guitar players at that time. It's a unique sound, not for everyone, but you can spot it in a crowd of Les Pauls and SG's. They really sing above the 12th fret. Sounds great through a fully cranked Marshall. This is a good clip of Johnny playing a Firebird live, to me it's the measuring stick of how a Firebird should sound. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKbMmYKmpaukj7M

There was a moment where I thought about converting this into a Johhny winter firebird on a budget! he was a phenomenal player.... Pelham Blue won out in the end though

When will Gibson and Epiphone learn, I dont care if you put the Gibson headstock on an Epi, I will never spend $1000 on a fucking piece of shit Epiphone.
@willjones88018 ай бұрын
who pissed in your cereal mate , epiphone is not as shit as you seem to think it is lol

You're exaggerating the price, those Epi sunburst Firebirds still retail for $650. I bought one last year and love it. It looks, sounds, and plays great. Gibson wants $6,500 for the same guitar with their logo and "quality". You go ahead and spend that if you want, I'm fine with the Epi.

Is not like Gibson or Epiphone care about a broke JohnDoe like you 😂😂😂
@carsandguitars8 ай бұрын
They are over a grand here in Aus...but I honestly can't fault the quality. Gibson MIGHT be 'better' quality but not $5000 more better, rather have an Epi as well :)
