@@TimeTeamOfficial So good to see a TimeTeam episode that is a bit closer to the "old format". I know that youll never replace the likes of Tony, Mick or Phil, but by returning to a format that lets archaeologists tell the story of How they do their jobs, and What information they can glean from a site. This was always the thing that made Time Team special. So glad you have stopped trying to find "media-friendly presenters" and are just getting back to the archaeology. Long Live Time Team.

Fantastic episode! I loved seeing the beautiful "old style" illustrations by Jon Elworthy- a worthy successor to Victor.
@Trixtah2 жыл бұрын
I like it better than the 3D imagery that tends to look more authoritative than it should be given the narrative. That's probably the aspect I like least about this new show. In fact, I intensely *dislike* the imaginary models - keep them to video games (I enjoy those!) or for when there's pretty substantial evidence of materials, layout etc (unlike the manor in the main eps - they couldn't identify any rooms with certainty, or architectural features). A sketch like in this one can still give an impression of a likely scene while not pretending to be anything more than imagination based on probabilities.

Thank you, that was a nice treat! Awaiting the second part wih anticipation. Compliments to Jon Elworthy for the Illustrations, they certainly reminded me of another time team illustrator.

Much more concentrating on the actual dig, one sketch to support some conjectures (no expensive (pointless so far) 3D modelling), the 3D-printed "bottle" to show what was found previously was a nice application of the technique, and much less hype and narration of might-bes/filler. I enjoy the facts and *relevant* context, which this provides very nicely, without stretching it out unnecessarily. (Excuse incoming rant). A really nice thing was no fluff like pointless video calls to the people doing 3D modelling based on nothing-much! I'm sure TT is getting a discount on their services, but I'd honestly rather they just pay cash for well-targeted use - like, if there's actually something they can render - and less "let us re-explain stuff and blather to the modellers for advertorial". Sure, talking to them about how to use certain techniques could be interesting in a behind-the-scenes kind of way - in exactly the same way as you'd talk to the director and lead photographer about shooting in tricky environments. Not in the main ep! Having a minute's discussion about the technique used to create the 3D-printed model here, based on an actual object, was just perfect. (sorry to piggyback on the original comment, but the point about its intimacy struck home)

for the perfume bottle, I like the notion of it being a tear collector more and I know some dutch archeologists that still hang on to this idea I might be one of them simply because the perfume bottle idea is just as much guesswork as the tear collecting idea well, instead of putting names on the item the right scientific answer in such a hustle would be ''we don't know''

As much as my family and I love the time teams, and applaud their return, I think the smooth as glass commentator idea, doesn't give the emotions and desire that is really needed. This makes the interest level higher by giving it more "personality" than just a clinical dig.

The difference is improved production, and not two young guys with a microphone, who don't always know what to ask. I know they were doing their best, but this style is much more engaging and informative.
@helenamcginty49202 жыл бұрын
I think you will find the 2 young guys with the microphone are fellow professionals in the field. Like Tony Robinson before them they ask questions to which the probably know the answer but the producers have to consider that not all viewers, esp younger people, will.
@calsale64242 жыл бұрын
So, very glad to see them going back to the sarcophagus. I always thought it was as important, if not more so, than the rest of the dig. I would like to know if the lid can be pieced back together? Is there an inscription with her name on the the lid or side of the sarcophagus? And, shouldn't her husband, or other family members be buried nearby? Perhaps Part 2 will answer these questions.
@faithlesshound5621 Жыл бұрын
If I remember rightly, the farmer showed up towards the end of the original three-day dig and said his father's men had smashed the lid and carted it off to their local dump. It must have been a ploughing hazard in middle of that barley field. That must have been before they alerted the archaeologists back in the 1960's. Hard to believe that we regard that as part of the stone age of archaeology now.

Now I'm curious. Would the burial have been isolated, or could there be further archaeology in the immediate vicinity? If she was a lady of stature I would imagine there might have been some sort of shrine or perhaps tomb to mark the spot, albeit probably robbed away for the dressed stone at some point. Always loved the show and Mick will always remain in our thoughts.
@csamuel012 жыл бұрын
If I remember the original dig correctly they suggested that the sarcophagus would have been set on the ground level in Roman times, it's just been buried at a later date. So it would have been visible from the large villa and the road in and out would have passed by it.

A lot of people are saying this gives the feel of the original TT, but in one notable sense, it really does not. I am probably the only person who's not a great fan of Tony on this channel, but I enjoy the relative quiet without someone striding around conspicuously yelling at people. Derek and Helen did a fantastic job with their laid-back interviews and commentary here, and I personally find it perfectly engaging with a sufficient amount of context and more focus on what's happening (I honestly don't think I've ever seen such a prolonged shot of a trowel actively shifting dirt from around something of interest). They have enthusiasm and humour, and genuine expertise - that shines through without needing to be shouty about it. Obviously it's important to have presenters that engage audiences - and we get a leg-up here because we already know Helen and Lawrence - but there are definitely different ways of "engaging". I'm glad the archaeologists get to tell their own stories - of course, that was always the best feature of TT, but I like getting more of it.
