Btw on my profile picture is the real symbol of Novgorod, which should be made their flag in game. This symbol - half-lion, half-horse was depicted on Novgorodian coins. Currently in game the flag of Novgorod is coat of arms that was made during the reign of Catherine "the Great", literally a monarchist symbol that has nothing to do with Novgorodian Republic.

As far as I'm aware the high relations with Scotland allowing you to take an alliance is historically accurate for Novogrod. Scottish merchants had a noticeable presence in the Baltic and Novogrod specifically granted them several privileges to facilitate favorable trading relations.

Another strategy is to ally Poland. Just don't take land that they or Lithuania want before you don't need them to beat up Muscovy anymore. While allied to Poland you don't have to worry about Muscovy declaring either as you have the larger combined army. You can then get some other allies that want land from Muscovy and declare war when you're ready.

Paradox tossed Muscovy a huge bonus for this game. At start on 11 Nov 1444, Muscovy should be in a disastrous war against the tartars. Vasily II was taken prisoner in 1445. But Paradox being Paradox just glosses over this historic fact. Devastated lands? nope! Succession issues? nope! White peace with Kazan? nope! But let's start Poland and Hungary in an interregnum (because that's historic).
