+Howard White Precisely the point. I keep telling people that are clamoring about the engine, that there's more to a vehicle than just an engine. Thanks for your comment.
@DanielRichards6448 жыл бұрын
+Howard White thats why I always tell people, start at the ground and work your way back to the motor, you may not get to go fast right away, but you can push the car harder and have more fun with the stock motor while you wait to get the actual go fast parts, first thing (outside of a basic tuneup) that I address after buying a used car is a suspension overhaul, well after I get my radio setup in it, LOL.
@bradleypreston52828 жыл бұрын
+EricTheCarGuy I keep trying to explain to a friend of mine who has a old 87 Monte Carlo...sure it'd be nice to drop in a big block,but if it's not got the right suspension or brakes... it's not going to be safe or fun to drive, how fun is having a car that doesn't have tight enough steering or enough braking performance to really use that horsepower?? I don't get it,that's why my Nissan is getting 4 piston front and 2 piston rear calipers and coilovers before a turbo and ECU...I want to be able to enjoy my added power, not be worried about whether or not it'll stop or turn
@ericthecarguy8 жыл бұрын
+Bradley Preston I agree 100% and that's what I'm hoping to show with this build. It's not about how much horsepower you can make, it's about how you use the horsepower you have. My Vigor has about 160 bhp, but the car is so well balanced, it's a dream to drive. That's what I'm going for with the Fairmont build. Thanks for your input.

I'm very familiar with the Ford Fairmont. Starting with my grand dad buying one new, same color as yours but 4 door. It was the first car I ever drove and for quite some distance as he was getting old, got nervous and turned the driving over to me one day at just 14 years old. Then, my dad bought a Fairmont wagon and drove it for years before selling it to a schoolmate of mine to drive to college. Also, my best friend's first car was a 2 door Fairmont and I watched him total it, pulling out from the end of my street right in front of a car with their turn signal on (they were not turning). So... lots of good nostalgia with the Fairmont. Looking forward to watching this build.

I learned to rebuild a rear end on one of these old foxbody mustangs, one awesome tip I learned is whenever you need to press a bearing on a shaft, such as a pinion bearing on to the pinion, stick the pinion in the freezer for a half hour, then take the bearing and a map gas torch and heat the inner race. it should slide right on!

For your rear brakes and clip eliminators, I can think of 2 solutions. You don't want to stack them because your axes won't be all the way inside the diff unless you got longer axles, which I'm guessing by what you said you didn't. You could either get the bearing/mount machined to fit inside the caliper bracket and sit flush with the axle tube, or machine out the caliper bracket and find a way to mount it to the rear end solidly. the first one would assure your brakes will be good no matter what, but you would need to have any subsequent new clip eliminators machined in the same way if a bearing ever went bad. If the bearing are replaceable in the units, I would have them machined. If not, cut the brackets and find out how to mount them to the backside of the tube flange or right to the tubes themselves. Or, just use C clips :)

Don't know if this has been pointed out, but The Crown Vic 17" wheels have a deep, FWD-like backspace. On the rear, if you ordered SN-95 length axles ('94-'04) The Vic rims may be the right backspace or close. If you have Fox length axles, a spacer will be required. The fronts will likely need spacers.

Thats all good. This set up though has a fixed rear axle. I hate to critisize you. Performance cars though nowadays have independant rear suspension... you could have gone large here. Ok it's not ford, any of these diffs would have been better... Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW... ETC... These cars are designed and built to go round corners at speed and putting power down to the road more effiecntly. Love the videos Eric, Brian.
@ericthecarguy8 жыл бұрын
+Jane Calder I looked into it. The IRS versions were heavy and didn't have the best reputation. Also, the cost would have been a lot more. I chose this set up for affordability and strength. As for corners, I can drift around those if I want. ;)
@Blazer02LS8 жыл бұрын
+EricTheCarGuy IRS is highly over rated for straight line cars... Plus there are ways to make a solid axle handle as good or better than IRS, and without having the fun of broken 1/2 shafts and C/V joints.
@BlownF1508 жыл бұрын
Ford was beating BMWs around a road track very handily with stick axles not that long ago. You may not be familiar with road course events like AIX but there are plenty running SRAs and they compete with IRS setups.

AWESOME! body color on the rims depends on what color the car is. I missed if you were leaving it same color. the magnesium color looks good on steelies with chrome rings and caps on my 64 Malibu and body color didn't look right which is a dark 94 Chevy blue metallic. Such a great build you have going. can you do a mostly hidden roll bar and maybe tint the windows to hide it? Hey Eric I have been sourcing similar parts to convert to 5 lug with cobra brakes. Anyways you might want to go with 94-95 spindles as they keep the suspension geometry closer to stock. From what I have read the 96 and up and cause some bump steer issues. 96 and up have the straight tie rod link and the 94-95 has a drop. Great videos keep up the good work.

C-clip eliminators are also called flow paths for differential fluid leaks. Run them to get your project going, think about getting 9" ends welded on later. I've seen an axle pull clear through a c-clip eliminator at the strip.
@ericthecarguy8 жыл бұрын
+BlownF150 I'll head that advice. I don't plan on running it as a drag car though. I'm really just building a nice street car. Thanks for the input.
@BlownF1508 жыл бұрын
+EricTheCarGuy It's the leaking that's the biggest issue. Ultra Gray, Ultra Black RTV's don't hold up for more than a few weeks or months, copper high temp RTV seems to last longer. Problem is they are highly stressed even on street driven cars, they egg-out which causes the internal seal to leak or the flange is over torqued causing the same problem. Heat cycling between a chunk of aluminum and steel doesn't help either, neither does using nice full synthetic rear end oil which seems to find the smallest gaps easier than ATF. They are just a safety device but one that has a penalty given enough time. If you can, get the axle tubes fully TIG welded to the housing by someone with a proper jig since you'll be pulling it all apart anyway.
@ericthecarguy8 жыл бұрын
+BlownF150 I'll look into it. Almost doesn't sound worth it. Thanks very much for your input.

Great stuff, man! Wrangler TJ Jeep (1997-2006) owners cannot do much to their engines. CAIs are useless on the 4.0L, which is like a tractor engine. It is ported so that it is maxed on air flow in and out. Chips do nothing. It is a bulletproof monster in the Jeep, but you will not ever get much more from it as far as speed. We are concerned mostly with axles, steering and suspension. So this video looks just like a lot of Jeep videos. Even some of your parts are things I am familiar with as a jeeper. So I particularly liked this one. I *really* like the C clip eliminators; what a great idea! I wish you could get these for the Dana 35 axle. Have you considered how these will affect your stance? It looks to me like they will increase your rear axle width by about 4” unless they fit into the disc conversion somehow. If this is the case will you add spacers to the front wheels or account for this in some other way? Or will you just go with it? With your wider rims I would become concerned with the tires rubbing the wheel well openings. Please post some followup vids!
@wheelman4878 жыл бұрын

It almost looks like old things overtime are Rediscovered. before those axle retaining c clips, on semi floating axles there was a bearing the axle went through, and what held it was a collar that went on the backing plate. and what held the backing plate to the axle tube, were the same bolts that would hold that retaining collar. and you would need a slide hammer to pull the axle shaft. you unbolted the four bolts on the collar, holding it to the axle shaft tube. And there was an access hole, on the axle shaft flange, next to the wheel studs, to reach an extension through there with a socket on it. bearing failure could cause axle, and drum, with the wheel&drum Still bolted to it, to slide out. I think those c-clicps, are pretty sound. To actually move enough within that side gear to drop out, there'd have to be no spider pin. and to lose that, you'd have to have that bolt come loose. And THAT would be catastrophic, if you were driving down the highway.

Is that a wasp nest on the diff cover??? Because if it is...that's kind of funny. A suggestion: When you install the plate for the rear brakes, take out the bearings from the C clip eliminators and test fit everything (for length purposes) like that. Makes life easier for you. Also, if you happen to have issues because it's too much and the shaft is too short (i doubt it, i think you're gonna be fine) you can go to a machine shop and machine a whisker off the C clip eliminators so they squat closer to the plate. Also, nice setup in the future of the Fairmont, can't wait for the videos with the installs. :D

Looks like the newer Crown Victorias had a lot lighter steel wheels. When I took the steelies off my 89, I swear the things had to weigh at least 40 pounds each. It was absolutely ridiculous. The alloy wheels AND the ludicrous all-terrain tires I replaced them with COMBINED weigh less each than one of those wheels by itself.
