As a quick note. You need the expansion sound mod if you want the full sound from games that use expansion audio. Also this does NOT work with an Everdrive N8 and am not sure why. Glad you liked it!

Sorry, but it doesn't look sweet... it looks poorly constructed with the exposed soldering and plastic. Looks cheap. Plus you have to weigh it down... not really plug and play. The converters with the fabric pull ribbons are still really a better way to go. Again, sorry for the negativity, just being honest with my opinion.

I wonder if it's a prototype of some sort sent to him as it was already ready to go. In that case, they could send it to him to show off while they wait for the commercial versions to be built. I agree with you about the exposure etc. It definitely looks shoddy.

I still have my original small 80s Famicom to NES adapter. Still works great. Ok, I wouldn’t be able to use Famicom Disk System with it but it is really convenient, comes in and out easy, doesn’t stick out of my toaster and doesn’t need weights :)

Once I finalize my RGB fleet with my last holdout, my Sharp Twin Fami, I just need to get a nice 70 to 62 (or is it opposite) pin adapter to just play NES through that. Since I already own the TF I think that will be easier route, but if I had only NES, then def would grab this.

This would pair SO well with the FDSStick. FDS audio is handled horrendously when emulated, so I think this is the best way to experience FDS games with accurate sound here in the US on our front-loaders. So I'll need a ram adapter which is about $35, this converter which is $35, an ENIO Exp Board to hear the expansion audio which is $30, and the FDSStick which is about $15. All in all that's about $115 not including tax/shipping costs to play the entire FDS library in all its glory, all without soldering a single thing =)

Hey Riggs! thanks for showing off this product. I just got mine in and I'm glad you mentioned that you need the games weighed down. My NES toaster doesn't require games to be slotted down to read them but for whatever reason with this device the ROM cannot be read or properly loaded without it being weighed down. Still agree with you that this is a better alternative than those Honeybee type converters with the ribbon and such.

I now have this same setup, I got the last one from muramasa a couple weeks ago. My FDS Ram Adapter finally came in the mail and I popped in an ENIO EXP Board to hear the expansion audio, plus instead of the FDS I used the FDSStick instead. Only problem is I have THICK jail bars all in the image to the point where it's unplayable, even after cleaning the pins. I think there may be a bad trace in the RAM adapter somewhere or something.
@muramasaninja6 жыл бұрын
You using RF or composite? I found that if using RF then it has some jail bars but have had not problems with composite output.
@alienJIZ19906 жыл бұрын
Composite, I never use RF. And I know it's not the converter because I tried some famicom games in it and they work perfectly fine. I think I can see the bad trace on the RAM Adapter, I'll have to go the ghetto route and try retracing it with a pencil to see if the jail bars go away.

If you use a new 72 pin connector or take apart your front loader and pull the pins apart on the original connector, you don't need to push down on the cartridge. The Blinking Light Win is another option.

Around 1993 or so, Nintendo published new versions of NES and Famicom. They both looked like the same, except for having different sized cartridge slot. And the controllers that came with them were of dogbone type (shaped like SNES controller). Apparently, PAL versions were rare -- possibly mainly sold in Australia.

@turdfurgason66597 жыл бұрын
So....why no audio? Does it not output music?
@williamdrum98993 жыл бұрын
The US and PAL models of the NES are missing the required parts to output audio beyond the five standard channels. The Famicom (Japanese NES) has these features built-in. A few Famicom games used this ability along with custom chips in the cartridge to add additional sound channels. (It's important to note that Nintendo personally manufactured every NES cartridge, this was not the case in Japan.) Since the NES cannot play expanded audio, no NES games used those custom chips either. In addition most Famicom to NES adapters don't have the necessary pins to transfer expansion audio anyway. This one supposedly does but you would need to mod your NES to play expansion audio

@enginerd807 жыл бұрын
That looks awkward to use if it can't be locked. Could the adapter be shaped differently to allow locking? I mean, instead of this NES cartridge slot ▄▄▄▄▄▄ FC cart could it be like this? NES cartridge slot ▄▄▄▄▄█▀ FC cart (illustrated from side; shapes not exactly to scale because of limitations with the characters) Wouldn't that allow the adapter to lock properly, while leaving the Famicom slot accessible? Also, if I've understood correctly, the lockout code is different for PAL and NTSC. Could the chip support both, and have a small PAL/NTSC switch on the adapter? The point is that the product may be an improvement to earlier ones, but there's still something left to improve.
@muramasaninja7 жыл бұрын
Pauli Varra. So Honeybee actually made a converter just like you described with the exception the famicom games plugged in vertically into the end of the converter. Unfortunately though it would probably need a custom shell for something like that which would put it out of range of a small project. Realistically not enough demand. As far as the lockout chip it uses the AVRCIC which has different codes for all the different regions. When you hit the reset button it tries a different region every time until it find one that works. It then remembers that from then on.

I don't really care that you have to push down on it, after all if you were playing a famicom game that wasn't the standard size then you wouldn't be able to push down on the system anyways, but the exposed pins is a big issue for me. I heard the belts are likely to fail and there are a lot of dead units, be careful. Also the disks may have a different game than what's on the label. @painter1947 жыл бұрын
Ok, take getting a AVS or a different adapter out of the discussion. You had to put a can of soda on it to make it work. Who in their right mind would want to have to deal with that when there are SO MANY other options on playing Famicom games. I wouldn’t order one if they gave them away for free.

If you disable the lockout chip, 99.9% of the time you don't have to put any weight on it.

Yeah...that's not true for about 90% of the systems that still exist. And don't say a word about replacement pin connectors.
@boogiemanspud7 жыл бұрын
But if you disable it some bootleg/unofficial carts can literally catch fire. Wisdom tree sends voltage to the lockout, if it's not there it can literally melt the cartridge. Doesn't matter for most games, but disabling the lockout isn't a perfect solution, just a good one.
