Great, great, great overview of the Meike 85 F1.4. I am really looking forward to seeing the comparison mention in the video. Great work Matt. Thank you.

I'm going to shop for this lens rn! I've been waiting for an 85mm 1.4 for the Z mount for a while now, thanks for the review!

I still love my Viltrox 85 for my Z6. So good. Color, contrast, clarity. It’s got it all.

What an astonishing image quality, and then for that low a price, that's hard to believe. Looking forward to that multi-comparison also. And: absolutely gorgeous images, Matt, and please say hello to your wingman Joe from me!

I own the Tamron 85mm f1.8 in F mount. It's one of the few F mount lenses I didn't sell when I went mirrorless. I find it razor sharp and that's why I still have it. Do I love needing to use the FTZ convertor, no, but it's another great option. Glad to see that there are some 3rd party options coming to the Z mount.

Matt....I think you are the king of low-light cityscapes!! Just really love your eye for that style of photography!! Looking forward to your 85mm comparison video. Currently have the F mount 85mm/1.8 and based on your review it sounds like this would be a step up in many regards. Thanks again Matt!

HI Matt - as we have suspected, it appears that the third parties are going to tackle the 1.4 lenses for the Z mount - interesting to see if others make more 1.4 lenses in the near future. -PD

In the right hands it looks great value for the money. Personally I have my fill of lenes. But starting out it looks great. I just purchased the loawa 10 mm auto . Have you tested it ? My tip for auto focus is the use focus peeking by just touching the focus ring .The peeking just confirms the area in focus. The z 2 converter fixed on the 180-600 mm z On Benefits from this simple Technique. Like to see the lens test with the 2times converter it gives a better result
@TimSeraphiel10 ай бұрын
Yes, he tested it and the video is on his KZbin channel. It was the last lens review released I think.

This appears to be one of the better third party lenses - AF, usb port on the inner-mount (not open on the outside), mount seal, and a clickable aperture ring(!). Looks like a great setup for the Zf. Sounds like image quality is up there too 👍🏻 Oh and congrats on the new e-bike!

I could definitely consider getting the Meike 85mm/1.4. I know I won't use it very often so it would be good enough for me. However, I also know that Nikon's equivalent is significantly better, but I cannot justify to myself having a nice and expensive Nikon prime, which will lie unused in the bag most of the time.
@UrsuIonelPhotography10 ай бұрын
It's nice to see the IQ is top notch ...for still and static landscapes. How good would this be for an events tog? How's the focus subject tracking speed/accuracy, eye/face detection performance, hunting, video continuous focus etc?

Great review. I'm going to get this lens.

Colors were beautiful with the Meiki! Were you using a bloom filter? Loved the cityshot with the thin vertical lights on the wall and sidewalk. Thanks again Matt. Interestingly I normally notice onion/lemon shaped bokeh, but for some reason did not initially on this lens.. very smooth blurring. Many of the Nikkor lenses are a bit too... blotchy/smeared in comparison (though razor sharp!).
@tomasmarny31439 ай бұрын
Thank you for your overview. I'm just thinking to buy it on my Z8 as a portrait lens now.
@markkeohane985010 ай бұрын
Thanks for that. An interesting option. Not too widely available here in Pomgolia yet by the looks. Under 400 quid on the Meike site though I don't know where that's shipped from. Might be a good solution for my Z6 instead of the £££Nikon Z 1.2 version; I have an old AI-S manual 85/1.4 that I can and do use with an FTZ. But I don't shoot a lot at 85; I bung the old one on my Z6 or D700 or an F3 from time to time for a bit of fun and the odd portrait in street or studio. I love to see your work around Melbourne. I lived in 'Straya for six years in the 90s. I lived in Sydney but spent a lot of time working in Melbourne and am especially fond of the place.

Many thanks for the video. Please let me know what do you think I plan to buy this lens 85mm f1.4 for my Nikon Z50 for sports photography in very low lighting situations. Or could be enough with the Meike 85mm f1.8 with a lower investment?
@junkoharvey95710 ай бұрын
For sports photography, you usually want AF speed, reach (and usually zooming) as well as low light performance. F1.4 is 2 stops faster than F2.8. The high-ISO performance of all Z-cameras is good enough and the noise reduction software is good enough that F1.4 seems like overkill. Not to mention that your DoF will be small, presenting further demands on the AF system. The key question is: how fast are the AF motors on this lens? What is the sports setting you imagine where f2.8 is not enough?
@Joseph-iu6ip10 ай бұрын
I’m still in the market for a faster 85. I still have the z85 1.8. I saved all my pennies for the newer z85 1.2 then the Z8 showed up and I got that instead. Also love the bike. I have had the Aventon Sinch (original version) for two years and love it.

Matt, nice video. I am in the market for a 85mm for Z5. I like what I see so far. It goes for $470 USD. The Nikon Z 85mm goes for $700 USD. For an extra $230 USD, I can get the Nikkor brand. I have to wait for your side by side review. But, I like what I see so far.
@MrSimonj197010 ай бұрын
Better than the legendary 85mm f/1.4G and under $500?! I'm listening...I was saving for a Nikkor 1.8, but this looks very tempting indeed. f/1.4 does have a magic about it that 1.8 can't quite match. It's a ton smaller and cheaper than the Sigma 1.4 and Nikon 1.2, I think this is going to sell like hot cakes!

Hi Matt, I love your way of photography, which also got me into night photography. While watching the video I thought about a comparison between the Meike 85 1.4, the af-s 85 1.4, the 105 1.4, the Z 85 1.8 and the Z 85 1.2. Maybe the pictures are not too far apart? Right now I think the 105 1.4E is exceptional, that's why I do not feel the urge to get the 85 1.2.

Same for me. That 105 gets the job all the way done.

Great video as usual, Matt. This is a bit off topic, but can you say which CFExpress cards you're currently using with your Z8? I'm using the Lexar Professional Gold Series 2TB 1900 MB/s. But I've been getting that hot card reading quite frequently and quickly... sometimes just a few minutes after starting to record

Hey Matt, great night shots as usual! What fab results for a lens at this price point! For those wanting to get into f/1.4 it looks great. Like the idea of the aperture ring, but did you say it didn't lock?

Cheers Ray, yes it appears to not have a lock, which I only knocked it once. So I don't think it is a big deal :)

How does this lens compare to the 85mm 1.8G and 1.4G? I am thinking about it as a different perspective on my z5. I also have a D850 so the "G" licenses have that. Purely non professional work.

I can't wait to see your 85mm lens comparison. I'm so very happy with my Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8. :) Your whole video on this 85mm Meiki was very, wonderfully beautiful. I want to hear more about your ebike. Isn't Melbourne flat enough to make a regular bicycle also practical?

why do I actually prefer the cats eye bokeh? it sorta draws the viewer into the focus of the frame. I kinda like that more than perfectly round bokeh.

Nikon should take notice of the textured finish of the barrel of the lens. Most of the Nikons are so smooth they can be tough to handle in the cold.
