In this episode of my series “New Forest Walks”, I take a 4 mile circular walk from Beaulieu Road Station which is located 3.5 miles South East of Lyndhurst & 3.5 miles North West of Beaulieu. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car, for free, at the Forestry England car Park at Beaulieu Road and started my walk with a look at the Beaulieu Road Pony Sales Yard as well as the Beaulieu Road Railway Station (the least used railway station in Hampshire!).
Crossing the railway line (over the road bridge), I headed South towards Shatter Ford. I had originally intended to try and walk along the entire length of the Bishop's Dyke / Ditch- the remnants of a 13thC Deer park / Enclosure - however too many sections of it were broken by areas of bog.
I therefore continued on to Woodfidley Passage and then headed Eastwards, crossing the railway line again at Penny Moor.
Although I had decided not to walk along the Bishop's Dyke, I was easily able to identify it on the Southern & Eastern sections (the banking encloses around 450 to 500 acres).
My final leg of the walk took me Northwards to Stephill Bottom & then back to Beaulieu Road Station.
My final destination was the Drift Inn where I took light refreshments.

The New Forest Ponies have looked in great condition this year thanks to the rich grasses on the New Forest "lawns" - probably due to all the rain we have had!

This walk looks fabulous! Just up my street. I intend to get the train from Christchurch next Spring as unable to go this year. Wild ponies, a picnic and a pub and I'll be in paradise. Thankyou for sharing this with us Dave.

Another wonderful New Forest walk. My school “prom” was inside Beaulieu estate and have been to some lovely weddings at the Road Inn. Thank you for making these videos - it’s great to see where I grew up and learn about the history. I miss the New Forest every day but I know one day I’ll be back home!

Great footage of the pony sales and drift. Thank you for including that. I often gaze at that countryside from the train when passing through the New Forest so it was nice to see a walk in that area and what the terrain is like.

Addendum is 26-27 Jul is the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, which your walk reminded me of, but I couldn't conjure up its title until I saw it on the news. Cheers and Happy St James' Day!🎉

A great walk there Dave and very interesting seeing the Pony sales. Shame about the bog but remaining flexible is always a good idea. Looks a fabulous area. And always good to end with some refreshment. A beer I haven’t heard of and must add to the list of ones to try. A thouroughly enjoyable watch. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Beaulieu Road Station is in a wonderful patch of nothing. Nothing but birds, reptiles and sundew. Near to the wonderful Starpole pond too. So different from summer to winter. I may have spent some hours waiting for a recalcitrant greyhound to drag his soggy legs out of that smelly bog on the odd sunny afternoon or two. Wonderful area.

Being from the US, having unfortunately never visited the UK I have no idea of distances, but from London isn't New Forest close enough for a day trip or maybe wkd outing? Heck that train station should be busy IMHO. Logan got upstaged by the ponies this week. Awww. Cheers and thanks!🎉

London to the New Forest (via the M3) is about a two hour drive (80/85 miles) by car. Trains from London Waterloo to Brockenhurst take about 90 mins (trains go every half our or so). Hope that helps?

It was great meeting you the other day. I am afraid that I don't have any flyers - just small business cards - but maybe it is something I should look at getting! I hope that you enjoy the future videos going forward (there are a few more "New Forest" walks coming up!). All the best. Dave.

Dave Hi, can you please tell me the name of your Mesh Gilet and where you purchased it? Thanks Ian.
@DaveFord
@DaveFord Ай бұрын
It is a Haolong Sports Fishing Gilet. Bought it on Amazon in 2020 for £14.28. I see that you can still get it on Ebay for £12.95. In fact I have just recently bought a newer Gilet, again off Amazon for £17.99 - a Wirltte outdoor Mesh Vest as it has more pockets. Basically when I am out filming I need something that it not too heavy (on the new Gilet, I can fold up the back if it is too hot) and has plenty of pockets to put things in like maps, wallets, phones, dog treats etc.

I thought stations were managed by Network Rail as infrastructure, not by train providers.
@DaveFord
@DaveFord Ай бұрын
I was using information from the internet - Wikipedia indicates that the Beaulieu Road Station is managed by South Western Railway. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaulieu_Road_railway_station The Network Rail website indicates that they manage 20 main stations & the other stations are managed by the local train operating company. www.networkrail.co.uk/communities/passengers/our-stations/ If my information is incorrect then of course I apologise.

Thank you Dave and Logan.I so enjoy watching your walks, especially those in the New Forest as for over 40 years I come over from the Netherlands to the New Forest twice a year for several weeks.The New Forest feels like home to me.Watching your walks in the Netherlands makes me feel as if I am walking with you,knowing the sounds and smells and the whole atmosphere so well. Do you carry a tripod with you and do you attach your mobile phone or a camera to it to film yourself walking away or to the camera? Bye bye.🙋🏼‍♀️
