I remember reading the plaque you mention at the fireplace Dave, I think it said that it was once part of a wooden building that burned down leaving just the fireplace and chimney. It was left as a memorial. Lots of deer in those woods. Another great reminder of a great place.

Hopefully a replacement plaque will be put up at some stage as I am sure that many people pass by there (it can be seen easily from the road) and will probably wonder what it is.

Thanks Nigel. Some of these features are gradually becoming "absorbed" back in to the Forest as the years go by so it is always a thrill when you are still able to find something from "days gone by"!

Those Southern Wood Ants certainly know how to build an impressive nest!

Dave, another fascinating video. I've been to the Knightwood Oak many times but never been to the Portuguese Fireplace Memorial, but that will be on my list to visit next spring.

Thanks Phil. The Memorial can easily seen on the side of the road, just past the "Millyford Bridge" Car park. There used to be a metal plaque on a wooden post just next to it which gave information of it's history - but that seems to have been removed (or stolen!) completely and so anyone passing by and looking at it might not have any idea as to what it is & why it is there!
