This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” with my Whippet, Logan. In this episode, I explore the area around the Rhinefield Walk to the West of Brockenhurst.
The 5 mile route takes us through woodland, over open heathland as well as a New Forest Lawn with some fantastic scenery. My ramble takes me through the Aldridgehill, Clumber & Ferny Knap Inclosures - crossing the Ober Water on two occasions.
I get to see the historic Rhinefield House (now a Hotel) and finish up exploring the site of a disused Rifle Range.
Towards the end of the video, I came across two old wooden posts that were bolted together and I wasn't sure what they were for. A couple of folk have since advised me that it was a tabernacle for a flagpole and was used in connection to the range in WW2. So another little piece of New Forest history is still out there on the heathland.

Just done this walk today - really lovely through the enclosures, the trees are magnificent and of course, we looked at the gates at the back of Rhinefield House Hotel! Very interesting history about the WWII rifle range and you are right , it really should be preserved or marked as it is all archaeology. This is a walk I would suggest is best done in the winter and on a week day as the car parks were all rammed full today and quite a lot of people were parking on the road verges along the Ornamental Drive making passing difficult. Perhaps it is just because of the current crazy situation ? !

Glad you enjoyed the walk. Yes..the weekends are still "busy" at the moment and this year has been a bit unusual in the Forest with so few folk being able to go abroad.

Hello Dave. I don’t think Logan was very impressed with his hoodie, at least he didn’t look very excited. I was hoping you’d walk down Rhinefield drive where the rhododendrons are. But never mind. I’ll have to do it myself one day.

No, I don't think he likes it when the hoodie covers his ears!

Well done for keeping the forest past history alive. I’ve walked there many times and probably just walked straight past without even noticing!

Thanks Lisa. Although much of the area is heathland & woodland, it is amazing how much history is out there!

Thank you Ann. Yes, I hope to do some walks in other parts of Hampshire (did one recently at Breamore) as well as Dorset (did one at Knowlton) and Sussex. The next "video walk" (that was filmed the day before "lockdown"), due out in a fortnight, comes from Heyshott & Ambersham Common in West Sussex.

Despite the Germanic name, Rhinefield is apparently a corruption of "rye field", at least according to Pevsner. I also believe there's another hunting lodge north of Brockenhurst, just to the east of the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, close to the Bolderford Bridge.

Thanks for the info regarding the origin of the name, John. I did try and find the hunting lodge near Bolderford Bridge - but failed! (See my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2KWhqatrJ1_eqc). However I have found a few others on my travels (ie the one in the Sloden Inclosure kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWOXhGp7Z7RjmLc). Some are easier to find than others!

Super walk as always maybe those mystery two bits of wood could have been a flag pole "brace" we get them up here on Salisbury plain for range flag poles??? Just an idea?
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 2 жыл бұрын
I think you are correct there Lee. The area was certainly used for tank training in WW2 and so it would have made sense for there to have been a flagpole there.

Thanks for another great video. Logan looked very smart in his new coat. Looking forward to doing this walk once lockdown is over. Especially like your history snippets, did you find out what the two bits of wood were for?
@DaveFord

Thanks Ann. Someone has suggested that the two posts bolted together look like a tabernacle for a flagpole and another person has also confirmed that it was there when the area was used as a range during WW2....which makes sense.

Another brilliant walk Dave, I have missed my walks in the forest since this lockdown. I have watched most of your walks and followed them on an O/S map so can't wait to get out and walk them myself.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this and all your videos. I live near Heathrow but venture to the New Forest most weeks for my walks when I’m off shift. I did one last month in this area then on to Blackwater Arboretum and round. Really enjoyable. Thanks for taking the time doing these videos and hope you keep them going. All the best.
