As a horse owner, I suggest you get an older trained horse (or two) to learn to ride as your filly grows. Then you could also ride as a family and explore your beautiful properties! I am envious of your new filly though... she looks like she's sensible and yet sensitive. You'll have a lot of fun I'm sure.

100% agree with this! A person who does not know how to ride should not get on a horse that doesn’t have much or any experience being ridden. A year of riding a few days of a week should be sufficient, and if he does I hope Dusty videos it so we can watch his horse skills grow!

Agree. If not having a halter is not an option, I would also remove the nylon halter and replace with a breakaway halter or breakaway neck strap. Nice looking little filly.

As a horseman, I'll admit to learning how to ride on one of those old nags who really ought to be worth a million dollars to parents. But I grew up in the public stable, begging to help hold other's horses, watching Sunday horse owners and their animals react and hearing the wisdom of hardworking cowboys (beats a babysitter tenfold!). Today, as an old horse owner, I marvel at today's youth who, in my neck of the woods, view horses merely as vehicles, worth not much more of their time (for high-price tags!). I've had promises of help from young neighbors which dissipates into 'I'm busy' after they learn my old mares aren't broke to ride. (Old broodmares aren't usually broke to ride.) Growing up with these critters is fodder for developing solid good sense, deep thinking and surmounting challenges, which our youth today doesn't participate much in. This filly has a couple years before she'll be broke to ride. A nice, well- broke 'million-dollar' nag saved from the auction or resurrected from somebody's back pasture would be a Jim dandy teacher for learning to sit strides on horseback (and definitely: DO 4H!) but mustn't forget to cultivate a love for equines. It goes much deeper than 'I wanna ride' and an unbroke, curious new yearling can do just that for learning how to cultivate a bond and/or deep friendship!

I love horses, haven't been on one in 25 years but would love to ride again soon. Since horses are pack animals I can see the benefit for this filly to have mature horse mentors

@@rockybernard2997 I can back these words of wisdom, I allowed my daughter (6 at the time) the option, she could have horses or race cars. Well she obviously chose horses. And she started riding on broke horses, but wanted her own. Bought her a year old rank mini with the understanding that she had to break her (under guidance of course) if she wanted to ride. By the time the mini was 3 she was riding it, sold the then broke mini and she has broke out multiple horses since then. She just won her first championship trophy saddle last year on her 18th birthday.

It's so exciting Brooks getting her own horse!!! The new filly is absolutely beautiful! I love all colors of horses, but Buckskin and Palomino are at the top of the list.
