I bought a VR-09 based on Jacks review with the korg Vox. I love this style layout it’s fantastic. The Roland has a very good synth section as well.. obviously so does the Nord. The Yamaha is lacking in this department. The VR-09 is a great budget option I was even able to pick one up new for 500 bucks as it’s been replaced with identical VR-09 B. These Nord style keyboards are so much fun to play as a performer it’s no wonder the other companies are copying.

When I eventually got to listen to these sounds on a high quality playback system, it confirmed my initial suspicions, these sounds, the acoustic pianos in particular, are a bit bright - Critical listening also confirms that ye old Yamaha trick of covering up sample quality challenges with great effects - perfected all the way back in the Motif, still applies here. Should be ok for live playback... but may need careful adjustment on EQ to counteract that consistent brightness..., that's apparent in all the sounds...programmed to impress on Utube and in the store......!

Programmed to cut through a thick mix with guitars & vocalists. You can dial back the highs, there’s a 3-band EQ with sweepable mids. Seeing as you’ve got great ears, if someone forced you to play this keyboard, all you’d have to do would be to dial back any offensive highs or upper mids. As we all know, you can subtract frequencies but you can not add them. Having the extra brightness means there’s the option. This only bothers me when a digital piano doesn’t include an easy to access EQ.

I've been playing the CP88 a fair bit over the last week or so. I absolutely love the new C7 sample and the keyboard action might be the best action I've ever played on a digital. I honestly couldn't get into the CFX and Bosendorfer samples... no body in the samples IMHO. C7 sample was just so beautiful and had pretty much everything I love. I did find it a little jumpy at times but so is the Nord Grand in that regard. Electric pianos are great too! I wish it had a basic filter control on the synth as I really wanted to filter some of those pad sounds... but nevertheless.. Its a great keyboard but perhaps priced slightly too high on launch... now I am seeing it for a pretty good discount in stores and I expect to see it everywhere in the next years.

Sounds like you're used to hear and play the piano in anechoic rooms XD I'm really in love with Yamaha synths for the sounds of their reverb algorithms, also for the slightly touch of ambient in the clean samples, they seems to have maid the recordings in a great sounding studio enviroment. The important is to tail the reverb to the style of music you're playing. I'd like to listen a layer with a soft and slow acoustic string section, I'm already missing the "layer strings" program of my old Kurzeil.

Why I bought the CP88 (long-winded review/statement) For my history, I have previously owned a Roland A90 Piano/Midi controller and a Yamaha Clavinova PF-100 (circa 1994) and I got incredible amount of use from both but due to personal changes in my life I thought it was time to upgrade since I haven’t had anything new for almost 25 years. Just so everyone knows, I am not biased with any company whatsoever. Fast forward to Nov/2018 where I purchased a Nord Piano 4. Absolutely LOVED the sound however, there was a huge issue with the keybed as it was making more noise than it should. To the point upon release of the keys the noise would resonate through my mic and through my L1 compact. Not acceptable. After many views KZbin comparison videos and personal demoing in my local music stores I was undecided between the Korg Grandstage, Korg Kronos, Roland RD 2000, Yamaha CP4, Korg Krome nd the Roland FA-08. All great pianos/workstations so it was a matter of sound, versatility and of course the keybed. So, back in April I my local store had a CP88 so I jumped on. They had it running through a small Fender amp and even with that I got soooo sooo excited ….just as I did my Nord. So, when that excitement hits, instinctively I go with it. Plus, the keybed/action was just so soooo amazing that the decision was made there and then. So, traded in my Nord Piano 4 it in for my new love, the CP88. Unfortunately they only had the floor model so they gave me their floor model as a loaner until the new one came in. So, as far as sound. I will admit I am not as happy with the piano sounds themselves compared to the Nord but with some tweaking with the EQ I have got 3 amazing piano sounds that I am very very happy with. The CFX has this sort of tinny sound to it and I will admit I thought the CFX on the CP4 was a bit better. However, the Imperial, S700 and the upright U1 are truly amazing. A little tweaking and you can basically get a great sound out of it. The CP80/70 sample is definitely comparable to the Nord (which I use quite a bit in my set) so apart from the bug that’s going to b fixed this coming September it sounds absolutely incredible. The Wurlitzer (especially with April’s update) totally blows the Nord away. I am just so so happy with it as it really helps with my Supertramp/10cc tunes that I use in my setlist. The keybed, Well, it truly came down to the CP4, the RD2000 and the CP88. The CP4 was great for sure as was the RD2000 but after a number of jumps between the CP88 and the RD 2000 I found the RD was a little heavier than the CP88 and the CP4 was a little lighter so the CP88 was the perfect balance between the two. As weird as it sounds (no pun) I feel my playing has actually improved on the CP88. Songs that I had a hard time playing before (Tony Banks’ Lamb intro and Firth Of Fifth plus some blues scales for example) are coming much more easier. Weird how that works. Yes, there are only 57 sounds with the CP88 as opposed to the NP4 and yes you can load samples into the NP4 but I had to be practical within myself. I use Logic Pro X for a trillion sounds that I can trigger so for home use/editing/sequencing for backing tracks the limitation of the sounds in the CP88 is not limiting to me at all. Plus, one has to ask themselves……or myself…how many sounds does one actually need? I mean seriously…these are stage pianos. I usually get between 3-5 gigs per month and I do not use more than 4-5 sounds within my 40 song setlist. So it’s basically, Acoustic Piano, CP80, Wurli, Rhodes and a AP with a combined Ample Acoustic Guitar (triggered through my laptop) /Piano sounds. The rest are just icing on the cake. Ok, the other pianos may give you way more sounds but in all honesty, many of them are just different variations of the same sample, Don't let 1000 sounds fool you into thinking you're getting 1000 samples because you're not. Now, that’s just me and I can’t speak for anyone else’s needs as everyone has different needs and requirements. I also love the fact that I do not have to use my M-Audio interface anymore as the CP88 has a USB audio interface built in so with that and my upcoming purchase of a Yamaha MG10XU mixer (USB audio interface) going through my Bose L1 Compact system will be the perfect match for me. So this whole notion that CP88 blows this out of the water…or The RD2000 feels better or the Nord Pianos sound so much better is total nonsense. It is ALL down to personal taste for personal needs. I will say for price, keybed, versatility (again depending on your needs), sound and weight (yes I can actually carry the piano in my gig bag with one hand) the CP88 is hard to beat….but that’s just me. Finally, I will say buying a piano is actually worse than buying a house or a car. Very stressful at times and we always want to make the "right" purchase. Yes, you can watch a trillion KZbin videos, read all of their comments, jump on the forums, get a a thousand different opinions and yes it helps but many times it can actually confuse you even more and also cause ulcers...LOL. It’s best to think of your own needs and try not to let anyone’s opinions (comments) sway you but your own. Cost/price aside there will ALWAYS be pluses and minuses to any of these pianos and if I had to do it all over again I would have waited until April this year before purchasing the Nord and maybe taken more time to study as it’s been 9-10 months to land to where I am now. I hope my experience/review will resonate with anyone who is undecided in purchasing the CP88 or any other piano for that matter. Now get out there and get a CP88!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You won’t regret it….LOL!!!

I've also used those Genesis sections you mention for testing :) I presume Yamaha have created a good action this time. I too found the RD-2000 a little heavy and sluggish, but really liked my time with the Grandstage. What did you make of that, and did you play the 88 or 73? I'm looking to replace my old PF500 - in no rush, and don't want to make the wrong decision! Lastly, did you play the CP-73? If so, how is the action on that? I'm also very aware of pedal action, sympathetic resonance etc. in the piano section. I do like a bit of realism, if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks!

@@randszzob8590 Hey there!!! Unfortunately I have never tried a CP73 but a friend of mine has and he uses it for gigging so it replaces his Nord Stage 3 (76 keys) and he finds the action much better. A couple of weeks ago I went into my local music store to buy a couple of things and just for fun, I tried the Grandstage, the SV-1 (they had a floor demo) the Roland FA-08, the RD2000 (again) and they were all very very good but as soon as I tried a few keys on their CP88 it was like one of those "ahhhhhhh" moments where it just felt absolutely right in every way so as far as the keys/action.bed goes I say the CP88 beats them all but that's my opinion. Everyone is different. I have heard many positive things about the action on the CP73 and most are very very happy from what I have read and my friend as well. Take your time. Study, watch as many KZbin videos as you can...read the forums....etc etc. Great resource is here: www.yamahasynth.com/ask-a-question/forums/cp88-cp73-stage-piano I personally don't know what your needs are but I am sure if you go for the 73 you won't be disappointed. I believe there is one fella that is complaining about some bug about the black keys (doesn't affect my CP88) regarding velocity but I am more than positive Yamaha will address this in their new firmware update coming in Sept. I contacted Yamaha regarding an issue I had with the CP70/80 sample giving a "loop" effect when hitting the sustain pedal and they assured me it will be fixed coming Sept. As is with all new releases there will be bugs but I am positive Yamaha will address them all. I have another bug that I am going to bring to their attention (not a major one) so hopefully that will be rectified as well. Don't let what i am saying affect your decision. It's such a great instrument. As I said soundwise I prefer the Nord In some areas) but the cost is way too high but I prefer the CP70,Wurli, Rhodes sounds on the Yamaha. Again just my opinion but one has to consider that when you buy these instruments there will always be something lacking (and also gaining) compared to other pianos. Just test drive them and read. More interesting is that they are both weighted with an 88 key graduated keybed. Hvind tried both today I'll say the roland has better piano sounds, and more off them and more customization. I wasn't a bit fan of the yamaha sounds and there really isn't much you can do to them with the minimal tweaking this keyboard allows. Also I'm not a fan of the yamaha synthetic ebony keytops, though the white keys have a nice weight to them, I'd highly recommend people playtest the CP-88 first.

I had an S09ES for a while ONLY for that piano sound. But I play all sorts of styles and while Chopin sounded amazing, boogie woogie sound terrible. So I remain happy with my (two in case one fails..) P120s. They just WORK, and have better dynamic range to my ear than CP4, CP40... And when you work with live drums etc, you REALLY need a good dynamic range. Nord pianos have it, but I'm not so fond of the sound. However, I am looking forward to trying this CP88 :)

@@lukejuby Sorry mate not exact. I still have the S90es. Nothing comes close to that piano sample. Best piano sample ever recorded for digital pianos. You will never get the exact piano as on the original I don't care into which piano you put it into. I have it on my Motif XF. Though it sounds great not even close to my S90es.

Samuel Immanuel 11:40 on this one. It demos some FM pianos. Obviously it isn’t FM synthesis but sampled recreations.... but lovely. There are quite a few DX sounds in it to play with and add effects.

The original CP70/80 is one of my favorite sounds heard in so many songs I love from Genesis and Peter Gabriel (and later Keane). It's always the first patch I look for in a store. I wish I heard more in this demo, but the demo was cool nonetheless.

Same here! I have a CP70 in my apartment and a CP60 that I've occasionally taken to gigs. I've been waiting AGES for Yamaha to finally put the AWM2 stuff into a stage piano...this is my ideal board. CP sounds are good. But now I'm left wanting for a Graded/Triple Sensor action on the 73-keys/footprint I've become accustomed to.

Serious question: is it possible to set the touch sensitivity off on the sub section, while leaving it active on the piano section? I currently play an EW400 and can't separate the touch sensitivity between the main and dual voices. I'm looking to upgrade, and this would be a really useful feature.

CP88 action feels great, not as heavy as the P515 action but solid enough and pretty good overall. CP73 action is kinda dissapointing, very similar to the GHS action by Yamaha. Feels a little bit cheap and not as realistic as the action of the CP88. I understand that some compromises are being made by the companies in order to feature lighter and more portable units but at this price range that action shouldn´t be accepted.

I’ve always liked how Yamaha respect the expectations of great sound, quality and ease of use functions. It’s just a shame they are trying to copy nord. Yamaha are much better at user experience and user interface. Problem is the their piano samples aren’t good enough. Whatever nord did when they sampled real pianos in the studios, they hit the sweet spot. Nothing has ever come close to the nord sound since. Unless you buy a real piano of course.

The Mp7 uses the RH3 which is flat awful. The Mp11 whilst best in class is about as portable for stage, as trying to move a truck with the handbrake applied. They are a different instrument category as a result. For the home yes, for stage, lol no.

The Behringer Odyssey is what I am going to get, since the only analog synth I have is a Korg Monologue (unless you count Korg Monotrons) [and I have like 30 keyboards, all digital and most very very cheap lol] I don't have an analog poly but if that Behringer UB-Xa sounds like the real thing, it will be my first. I had the Reface DX and sold it because the sound was too clean for me and I ended up with a DX21 for less than $100. Grandfather said he would pay half of the Odyssey price for my birthday. It is absolutely simple and user friendly. I have been shopping around... playing the Yamaha CP88, Roland RD 2000, Korg Grandstage, Nord Piano 4, Nord Stage 3. I am heavily leaning toward the CP88 because of the user interface. Within minutes of sitting down, I was navigating it with ease. I have a 20 year old Roland XP 80 - which I still love, btw, but you have to do some serious menu diving to tweak anything on the fly - not easily accessible. Personally, I don’t need 1000 onboard sounds... But I do have the Korg M3 app if I do want access to a ridiculous amount of sounds 😊

Played one a while back. The instrument patch that sways my decision in buying a new keyboard will always be the Rhodes patch. I go right for it. This one disappointed immediately. Same old generic, boxy, “electric piano” sound you hear down the middle of the road. I didn’t even bother with other sounds, if the Rhodes ain’t happening fuck the rest.

If you have a controller keyboard,or one to use like,and you need good ep,organs,clav,and synths,I'd recommend you a gsi gemini expander. Can stack only 2 voices,but each of the 15 engines is over the top quality and can singularly run through 11(or 13,can't remember)quality fx. It's possible to personalize it easy via smartphone or anything connected to internet and save presets and midi schemes. Nice instrument. And costs much less than a stage piano.

so i had to watch the same ad 3 times because the video started, played an ad, skipped to 23 min, it played another ad, i skipped back to the beginning and it plays another ad. what the hell?! unsubbing from your great content because the platform is trash now.
