Not convinced by the Sparrow argument, I think he is massaging the evidence to fit his own rather lame hypothesis; the earliest representation of the #1 Bamboo is a String of Cash or 'mayfly'. The current consensus of thinking is that the game developed from a cash-based card game, with single coins for the Circles/Dots, strings of cash for the Bamboos and Myriads of cash for the Characters/Craks.

@@PropagandaMinister Most modern Chinese have no idea of the origins of the game, as it was banned during the Cultural Revolution and all sets destroyed and factories closed.
