I started playing mahjong two years ago for Chinese New Year and forgot how to play. Chinese New Year is coming up in about a month and I'm learning how to play again. Your tutorials are extremely helpful and have lots of information that other videos don't have. Thank you for taking the time to make each lesson!

Thank you so much for these lessons. Cantonese style is what my friends are try to teach me but I feel bad for slowing up their games since they all grew up playing MJ. Your lessons are nicely divided up and I like your pace of teaching. Scoring is the hardest part for me, your handout is extremely helpful. I have no problem with the quality of your videos, maybe I am already viewing the improved versions!?

Excellent video series! Thank you so much for teaching this with the flowers! I am very new to Mahjong, and I have been looking for a good into series that includes the flowers! Most of the ones I have seen so far just remove them and teach the game without them.

you might explain sometime, that the flowers have nothing to do with strategy during the game itself; drawing a flower tile gives you a "bonus" tile which you draw from the end of the wall (AKA the "tail").

Thanks for the input! I will make a note of this because I am filming this whole lesson again. This series of videos were done when I first launched my channel in 4/2017 so I had little experience, no mic, and no lighting!

Thank you for these helpful videos. I have a question about the flower tiles. What happens if it comes to a draw, so the last tile is drawn and it happens to be a flower? No replacement tiles can be drawn but the game has to end with a last discard, right? Because there is even a Fan if you win with it. But if you discard a tile you have less than 13 tiles which is illegal. Even if you play a variation that uses a 14 tiles dead wall, you run into the same problem because a dead wall always has to be 14 tiles, so you can't draw a replacement from there either, otherwise there are not enough tiles in the dead wall (same reason why you cannot declare Kong after the last draw. Thanks for the help!

Who gets the discard tile if the player to the right wants it as a chow, and another player wants it as a pon?
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 5 жыл бұрын
If a player claims a discard for a chow and another player claims a discard for a pung, the player claiming the discard for a pung gets the tile.

@@MAHJLIFE I played once when I was in Taiwan a few years back but forgot most of the rules. I'm relearning with the Hong Kong version but the hardest part is all the points 😅 When I played that one time we just played until someone won with a full hand, but now I'm not sure how correct that was
@thomasmcgill6886

Thanks for the videos, they're very helpful! I had a question about concealed Kong's. If you have a concealed pung in your hand and you then you pull the 4th tile from the wall I've read that you can lay it down as a 'concealed kong' and take another tile. I'd read the advantage is that you can later split the kong if needed to make a chow but wondered how that might look if you've already picked up an extra tile to play with. Do you discard two tiles in that case? Or is this not possible? Thanks!
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 4 жыл бұрын
My pleasure, Thomas. If you want to be able to use that 4th tile for a chow, keep the pung concealed. If you declare a concealed kong, it's locked in as a kong and cannot be used any other way.

I understood that to start the game, the very first player ( the dealer) is the East position. However, during this hand the next player to play a tile (going counter clockwise) is the player right of the dealer. What is his position? Is it South, or is it North?
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. The seats are assigned in counter-clockwise order starting with East, the South, then West, then North. I was taught this mnemonic, "East Soup With Nuts".

Michele Frizzell - is this a hemisphere issue? Does something reverse when one enters the Eastern Hemisphere where the game originated? I can’t believe I’ve reached this age and have never heard this, lol. My brain says that North is ALWAYS to the right of East. Or is it that even though the players sit facing into the center the world of the game considers them facing OUT? At which point your outward facing right would be South but that’s still an inward facing person’s LEFT - which is where the table is? Yeah, we’ve all been cooped up a while, lol.

Hye. Question. Is it valid to win by taking the right side discarded tile to make a chow as the last set of a hand.? As we knw tht a chow can only be called from the left side discard.. please need answer and enlightenment..
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 4 жыл бұрын
When a player is ready to win, they can claim a discard to declare mahjong regardless of the block it completes (i.e., single, pair, pung, kong). When a player is not ready to win, they can claim a discard to complete a chow only from the player on their left.
