You always make good points. Why can't we do something about it? Why can't you start a business that manufacture devices that aren't misleading and devolving? Can we crowd fund something? Compete? Fix the world?

Need a few hundred million dollars of someone else's money. I couldn't even get loans for my own repair business back in the day for $20k-ish. This is for someone else to do who has that talent. And fundraising is a talent. I lack that talent. I fail there, big-time. The reality is that a lot of the stuff we have come to take for granted that just functionally works in modern devices took a long time to achieve and you would essentially have to start from scratch on many of those things with a new business making these devices. That's expensive as hell

@@rossmanngroup I'm sure the crowd funding is there but I'm also fairly sure there are global politics involved in manufacturing phones. As soon as you become capable some government agency shows up with a threat of lifetime imprisonment if you don't silently remove features and implement back doors. It's very tinfoil hat but let's also be real that there's zero chance the lack of phone competition is natural. Could also come down to supply lines... can't make a phone if your order of a hundred thousand CPUs gets 'delayed' for two years while all the major competition gets millions of them.

They are starting to show how limited they are for a variety of reasons... Part of the appeal was that you could have basically all forms of computation in one device. You can call, surf the web, use apps, game, even do some work tasks all in the same device. The problem is that we are starting to realize that while smartphones are able to do everything, there are very few things that they can actually do better than more focused devices. So companies have started investing in diversified gadgets and things to lure your attention and make you buy more tech stuff that will go down the sink in a couple years

It's not just cost of living... It's the quality of the product. I have a Note Ultra 5G. I had a small crack on the screen. I thought about buying a new phone. I took a look at S23 ultra or S22 ultra. And while I was looking at them... I told to myself... "What's the difference?" They look basically the same! I still have 100x zoom, decent CPU, and all that. Like... Sure in theory these new cpu are "faster" but honestly, can you actually tell the difference? 🤔 The only real improvement I see is more storage (but would you imagine... Note 20 has micro SD card...) And a new phone = new battery since mine has degraded over these past 3 years. But be honest with yourself. The difference nowadays between phones are minimal. They make no sense that on the refurbished market, a basically new Note Ultra 5G with new battery and in what to the naked eye is a new phone cost $400-$500 USD whole a S23 Ultra cost more than $1000 dollars. And what would I get? 🤔 I'm not sure. They are basically the same phone. A 0.1 second faster ain't gonna destroy my day. A 0.1% better camera isn't going to destroy my day. And a battery I can always just get it replaced. That is what is killing the new phone market. They are all the same. And a used 2020 Note 20 ultra is a fantastic phone.

Xiaomi Pocophones are among the best new phones on the market right now. Cheap, lots of internal storage, high resolution, high color fidelity, high refresh rate, decent sized IPS panels, external microSD, headphone jack and dual SIM support, run custom ROMs great, doesn't get sabotaged by planned obsolescence, and makes a decent gaming phone to boot. About the only con I have with these devices is that the USB-C port only supports USB 2.0 speeds. Their internal QA test app has incorporated USB 3 and alt-mode tests recently though, so that may change in a few years. It's a shame the US misses out on their offerings because they just can't help themselves and had to wage economic warfare with China. As an outsider looking in, the US government & media projects so hard on the chinese it's insane. Takes a devil to know one, I guess.

I've been following the idea of an upcoming "data apocalypse" or "datapocolypse" for a while and all the companies offering cloud storage started to make more sense - and if the datapocolypse comes around 2025 or so you can bet the cloud services will be more difficult to switch away from by design as well as programs that will pull people away from smaller cloud services as a means of consolidation. Surprised you didnt even mention how much storage is wasted on the OS reducing how much you actually have. My s21 only has 128gb, and the storage tells me 28.3gb of that is taken up by system, and that number increases every update. So my phone that was advertised as having 128gb of storage really came with probably closer to 110, and now is down to 100gb that i can actually use.

Most corporates prefer to use frmaeworks/libraries for Everything they can to cut costs and it's become a way of life for some. Need a minor logging thingy, install a 100k line library for that one feature of it and not strip the assemblies, just a few weeks per year of optimizing the builds and compiler options would eat away 90% or More from most apps. It's ridiculous seeing somr simple bs app that does 2-3 things and not well even at that eat 300mb of storage when gamedevs csn stick entire pretty multichapter 3D games in 150mb or less with far more functional code and heavier resources included.

that debate has existed since the first devices. first off, its 128gb storage, total. they dont tell you thats all available. your car may be 12 feet long but that doesnt mean you have every inch as storage, they need part of that for it to function. maybe one day a company decides to put in some dedicated OS hardware, but that would cost a lot more money not just in hardware but in the software that talks to both chips. right now in android if you attach external storage it cant do some things, i wouldnt be suprised if they had to do some new things with the OS to recognize 2 seperate parts as internal instead of seeing the 'usable' part as external

It's both. Not only do they want you to pay for cloud storage, but they want you to pay extra for the exact same device just with a (slightly at worst moderately at best) bigger Flash chip for storage so you can store more in the device (after the OS, bloatware and other undeletable garbage eats half of the internal storage that is) BEFORE stating to rely on the paid cloud service. They're trying to double dip as much as possible. That's not even taking into account the "Pro" versions that might have a bigger screen and a little more RAM (but is otherwise the same spec wise) to justify the massive upcharge.

I think there actually is a "good" reason they're buying those brands, unfortunately. When I had to upgrade my phone, a headphone jack was a must have feature, but Verizon doesn't sell any phones that have one, so I ended up having to do a ton of research. Not only did I need to figure out what phones I could buy that came with both a headphone jack and the latest version of android, but I also had to do the legwork to figure out if they could be used with Verizon's network. For me its more due to the lack of new features that most phones have nowadays due to lack of competition. Nowadays you're more likely to be scared of losing a feature that you use alot than excited for a new feature that is coming out. If companies want more sales, they need to add more compelling features that differentiate themselves from their peers and make people actually want to upgrade. Incremental upgrades like camera upgrades and new processors are just not enough to justify an upgrade unless its part of your phone plan, especially since most people will most likely never use the full potential of those things because apps and mobile games are mostly designed to be cheap cash grabs without really pushing the envelope on what a smartphone can truly do

The drivers for gaming GPUs are not licensed for datacenters and you could get sued if you have an old gaming GPU sitting in a server somewhere. Furthermore, AI training needs large amounts of VRAM and gaming GPUs cap out at 24GB while Nvidia's datacenter cards go up to 80GB. @@weird-guy For Bitcoin, yes. Technically any proof-of-work algorithm can be optimized with better hardware that sacrifices programmability for speed. However, that's a huge expense to design and develop. Whether or not it makes sense to design and build an ASIC miner is a function of how valuable the currency is and how likely the mining algorithm is to remain constant throughout the ROI time of your rig. For something like Monero they've designed their PoW to stress hardware that can't easily be accelerated with an ASIC (e.g. memory), so the speed-up is lower. Furthermore, unlike Bitcoin, the community is at least theoretically willing to hardfork to an incompatible hashing algorithm in order to break ASICs. So it makes less sense to build a Monero specific ASIC.

Also since Android 5 your phone is required to be encrypted with no option to turn it off. My 2017 phone (but bought in 2019 and sadly, it died yesterday) had 32 GB of internal storage. The system decided it was going to use 16 GB for itself. I inserted a 64 GB microsd card thinking I could move some of my apps to it; but since the phone came encrypted I couldn't format it as internal storage, so apps couldn't be moved to it. The quality and friendliness of everything just seems to be declining.

I have mostly stopped streaming music on my phone. Now that I got an external CD drive, I instead rip CDs to FLAC to fill up the 512 GB card in my phone. You can get insane deals on old CDs compared to digital purchases. For instance, I got a secondhand copy of Prince's Emancipation (a 3 CD album) for 90 cents. Best of all, I get the physical album and can obtain a lossless digital rip of it.

Another advantage is that you don’t have to worry about the album being removed from the streaming catalog for whatever reason (licensing changes, politics, etc.).

I have everything pushed over from my old iPod, as well as some other stuff I used to datahoard back in the 2000s 2010s. Some are albums not available on streaming services. But I am more than happy paying for the subscription service for TIDAL, and I use it a lot. Unlimited streaming of HiFi music anywhere I go?!? It's too important for me to not get.

@@Zam432F I don't have experience switching from iPhone to Android, so I can't help you with that I afraid. When it comes to phones, Google Pixels usually have the best support from privacy focused OS's. If messing around with bootloaders and flashing ROMs is a bit too technical for you, another option is buying a Fairphone with /e/ OS pre-installed (I think they link a seller on Fairphones website). There is other options like that that I don't know from the top of my head. Good luck! Edit: I think the Calyx institute sells Pixels with Calyx OS pre-installed now that I think of it.

I’ve been so done with the smartphone market for years. Each time I had to get a new phone, I could watch how useful features and design elements were either dropped or replaced by bullcr&p. LG, the company I’ve stuck with for many years because I would still get a removable battery with the G5, a display without that godawful notch and probably the best headphone jack on a smartphone in the world with the V30, has dropped out of the market years ago. And unfortunately, they sucked balls when it came to software updates; which brings me to my largest issue, which is that there is no manufacturer that gives me both the hardware I want and full control over it and its software. Even though I can install a custom ROM on all my phones, it comes at the cost of limiting the usability of the hardware like the camera because it heavily relies on the proprietary apps from the manufacturer that are of course not freely available for download. At least the EU finally put an end to the non-removable battery nonsense. Let’s hope it will take the manufacturers by their balls in terms of software and security updates as well.

I know hating on Apple is cool but none of this is accurate . Other than the costs but even that is unavoidable to an extent due to increasing price of modern semiconductor manufacturing . New iPhones break down much less than old ones . Typically soldered connections are used to make more robust packages not less (compared to socketed/modular) . I suspect if u research you’ll find the opposite and new phones break down way less . As for less use ability. Come on… that’s not even real . Because of the jack? Most people in the market rather have a waterproof phone than a headphone jack.

Most people don’t care about things like the headphone jack, sd storage, etc. They just want the latest status symbol. It’s why they were able to get rid of those things and others in the first place. The vast majority don’t care or even know about that type stuff. To them a new whatever is far better than the one it replaces. If sales are slowing it’s only for economic reasons. We are the only ones that care about this type of stuff and we are a very small percentage of buyers.

People who buy *insert thing here* as a "status symbol" is such a small minority it's laughable when people use that as an excuse to shit on them. Normal people buy things because they want them, or it fits their use case. "Herpy derpy this person owns an Iphone, they're really dumb dumb huh". More like it's what they know, it does what they need it to and they're not adding roms/rims/rums and launchers to make their icons a specific grey color. Terminally online people or tech reviewers don't speak for the majority of people who couldn't give a shit about what they have as long as it does the things they need be it Apple or Android.
My problem with the cult of Apple.
