One of my favorite GenCon memories was back in 2010. I was running Twilight 2000... the old school version. At that point it was over 25 years old, and I was surprised I sold out (10 seats) in minutes. When I was running the game at GC, this balding old guy with a scraggly beard stops by and watches for a bit, smiling. I didn't pay it much mind -- at GenCon, people stop by and watch games in progress all the time. While the players were putting their minis on the map, the bearded guy says, "Twilight 2000, right?" with a big Cheshire Cat grin. "Yep!" I said... "Ever played it?" "Oh, a few times. Back in the 80s. Have fun, now!" And then he wandered off. It wasn't until weeks later I found out, that was Frank Chadwick.

I was a straight-leg infantry reservist back in the late 80s and through the 90s. All this was so real in those days, - we were practicing for WW3. We played 1e a lot back in the day and I still have all my 1e stuff. Can’t wait for my Kickstarter to arrive.

One of the best sandbox games you'll ever play. I was the king of NYC. Nothing opens doors up better then dropping a 105 round into Little Italy to prove a point. Made a base out of the UN building, and ran peacekeeping and humanitarian missions out of there and Roosevelt Island. We played a few games with other characters and brought them in from all over the world. Was a great time back in the 80's, but we really had to tweak out a lot of rules issues and technical stuff to let the game flow.

_Twilight: 2000_ was both exciting and terrifying when we ran it in the 80s, 'cause it was a little too real at the time. Was weird playing a 'realistic' post-apocalypse setting when you had _Threads_ and _The Day After_ playing on the TV.
@kastork82
@kastork82 10 ай бұрын
It's just as terrifying and "a little too real" today, when I'm running it in Warsaw, barely 300km away from Lviv getting hit by Russian missiles and 150km away from Belarussian and Russian troops massing and training near Brest...

I played this once or twice with my fellow tankers while stationed at Fort Hunter Liggett, California, in the 1980s. The scenario was that the players were remnants of the first Armored Division in Poland, trying to make their way back to some type of higher authority. While they had their rifles, they were on foot; but there was an unfueled M1A1 tank in a deep defile, covered with branches to hide it from sight. They were supposed to fight a local militia for possession of it, and there was a local mechanic in the tank trying to fix it when they approached. The players heard him moving around in the tank and decided it was a trap, so they moved off without investigating further. Assuming they could have gotten it moving (there were rules for players being able to synthesize fuel from organic ingredients) they would have been an important force to recon with, but alas, their caution kept them traveling on their LPC's (Leather Personnel Carriers, also known as "shoes").

This brought back memories. I was born and raised in Germany, we emigrated to the US in '83 when I was almost 16 (the Irish last name is courtesy of my stepfather), so growing up with the threat of war with the USSR was very real for me. I played T2K 1E in the mid-80's after joining the US Navy, and ran a few campaigns at my FLGS after moving to Utah in 1990. Currently I'm waiting on my Kickstarter shipment to arrive 😁 Funny thing about Skid's character: as soon as he said French, working class, brawler, the first thing that popped into my head (before he even said it) was Marseille, lol

@43:23 Ross Bryant: "Somebody shows up at your door". I graduated HS in 1991, and that was me my senior year in High School after taking the ASVAB. It was free to take, and I got out of a few classes that were growing a bit pedantic. I just wanted to not be bored, and ended up scoring 98% and having every bloody branch of the military almost literally beating down my parents' door. Would have gotten a 99 at least, if I hadn't started in the wrong column because I was so excited at the code section. It was just like how I broke non-software copy protections on software at the time. Ask Skid.

I played this back in the '80s and got on the Kickstarter for this 4th edition. Have been reading the rules and one thing that got me was the reduction in nationalities. In the original, your choices were the USA, Canadian, British, West German, Danish, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, and then soviet block which lists another 15. I also think I like the character creation in the original better. But that said cannot wait until my box set finally arrives and I can organize a game.

@52:00 Skid's rolling at first reminded me of an anecdote involving Gary Gygax. He did not roll on the table behind his screen, he rolled on his chair between his legs. Gygax had a custom made gaming table. It was hardwood and heavy, and he got a little excited during one game and ended up fracturing his wrist. According to the storyteller, this was at a GenCon in the early to mid-80s. Thank you guys so much for bringing back some of the period memories.

The AK-74 would be standard issue for the Soviet troops. The AK-74SU was a really short version of the AK-74 rifle. Think of AK-74SU as a personal defense weapon. Mostly issued to vehicle crews or helicopter crews. Also police units in the Soviet Union. The Spetsnaz( Special Forces)troops really didn't like the AK-74SU. In extended combat situations. The AK-74SU tended to overheat. Now under special conditions the Spetsnaz would use the AK-74SU. A mission where concealment is a major concern. That could lead to a Spetsnaz Unit to use the AK-74SU. Otherwise the Spetsnaz tended to use the AK-74S with a side folding triangular stock.

Just found this channel and happy to get some examples of this new edition for Twilight 2000. I played the original back in high school back in the late 80's and had a lot of fun with the system. After HS I went into the US Marines before going to college and while I was primarily an infantry rifleman for my MOS, I eventually received training as a NBC monitor/surveyor, which meant I was trained in all the various equipment to detect the presence of radiation and chemical weapons and would be expected to go out on surveys of areas my battalion was operating in during war if there was believed to be any NBC contamination in the area.

I haven't heard of this game, but man, after listening to this first episode I am soooo pumped for the next installment. Four great role players with Joe GMing this and going for a more serious, dark and gritty tone; sure seems like a recipe for some awesome gaming sessions to me! Ruins, winter, the RNG dice Gods called it. I can almost smell the desperation. What does desperation smell like? I think we're about to find out 😮

It's a very very old game originally. It was pretty huge in the late 80's and not much was like it back when it come out, very militaristic, very gritty. Very soon a lot of other games stole that thunder and it was known as the most needlessly complicated character generation system in history.

I’m friends with a bunch of ex military dudes, and one of them led us through this system. Set after everything went to crap, we were the “away team” of a US Military convoy rolling through the Middle East picking up US Citizens and headed for a port city (I forgot where) to try to secure passage to the United States (or link up with a US Navy ship. I forgot since we didn’t get that far.) I played a CIA SAD (Special Activities Division, basically spec ops for the spooks) who linked up with the convoy later on. He rocked an integrally suppressed MP5, and immediately picked up an AKM so he could loot ammo from bad guys.

I too have tumbled BADLY down the rabbit hole. Until literally like 3 weeks ago, I was far, far too cool to watch play streams: "Lame! I'd rather play than watch a bunch of try-hard nerds. Pft." I'm now devouring your playthroughs, might even go Patreon, and waiting impatiently for Friday nights and Time for Chaos. So thanks for being awesome.
