We teamed up with Scion to produce "New Garage Explosion!! In Love with These Times," a four-part celebration of lo-fi aesthetics and high-pitch partying. In Part One, we try to define "garage" and explore the origins of the genre.
ABOUT THE FILM
After a brief nod to garage's humble beginnings amongst American youth in Detroit during the 1960s and its contribution and influence on '80s punk, New Garage Explosion!!: In Love With These Times focuses on the scintillating present. As it pans trans-nationally, the camera profiles artists like the late Jay Reatard, Black Lips, The Dirtbombs, Thee Oh Sees, Smith Westerns, Vivian Girls and many more in an attempt to understand not only the exponential ascent of garage rock's popularity but the reason these people feel so passionately about it. A wide-eyed glimpse into a musical movement, the film is as much about the music as it is about the people contributing to the distinct scenes of the San Francisco, Oakland, Detroit, New York, Memphis, Atlanta, and Portland garage communities.

VBS directors Joseph Patel and Aaron Brown worked with producer/journalist Mike McGonigal to offer a particularly in depth examination of a multi-dimensional and often misunderstood slice of popular culture unfolding in front of us. New Garage Explosion!!: In Love With These Times is a candid snapshot of this magically vibrant moment in rock history, inspirational and brimming with DIY purity.

Garage music is about feeling and energy. Love it, live it and enjoy it. There is a sense of freedom & not worrying about what some people think.

I wish I saw Jay live (RIP) but I am lucky enough to say I've seen the Black Lips live as well as Ty Segall, Wavves, among others. One of my favorite memories was when I saw the Black Lips and randomly during a song Cole leans over and pukes on the stage and doesn't miss a note and continues like nothing happened at all.

Most of these bands are timeless, when you're talking about irrelevant bands in the comments you should fuck off. But mayby you meant to say that Ty Segall and OCS are the only bands who are still active in the music industry?
@SpeedDemon908
@SpeedDemon908 7 жыл бұрын
Wack boi No, not to say that I don't like the music, but this was just another hipster trend that died like 2 years after it took off. Ty and OCs (and Black Lips) are the only ones I know that anyone listens to anymore. I'm not hating, I'm just saying it's a shame that this did die off because I do enjoy the music.

Lucas Crossett yeah mayby, but this documentary was shot in 2010 and uploaded on youtube back in 2012. And bands like The Gories and The Reatards are from the 80s and 90s. I don't love all the bands in the documentary but most of them are really great.

This is great but there's another documentary on KZbin that focuses more on the Garage Punk bands of the 90's. Does anyone know it's name? The Mummies, Supercharger, Oblivians, Teengenerate, great shit like that. When I talk about 90's punk rock people assume I'm talking about NOFX or Green day... EDIT: I just answered my own question. It was part 2 of this goddamn documentary. I'm a dumbass.

Nonsense! 60s garage punk is 60s garage punk. New garage punk is new garage punk. Just cos it's new doesn't mean it's not real. If that were the case there'd be no metal music today as the original heavy metal stems from the 70s. Same with jazz. Same with all music. Go have a nap in your rocking chair, granddad.
@Slig1977
@Slig1977 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, everyone here knows garage punk was most popular in the 60's but it's a subgenre that never really died out. It morphed into the proto-punk of The Stooges and MC5, then was picked up by guys like The Ramones and The Undertones in the 70's. The 80's had bands like Thee Mighty Caesars who revived the 60's sounds. The 90's had bands like The Mummies, plus The Gories and The Oblivians who are mentioned in this video. In the 21st century it's being led by Ty Segall, Thee Oh See and The Black Lips. Class dismissed.
