I've been a Fender guy my entire life. I've been playing a tele for 15 years now and have had a couple of strats. I wanted a les paul to play with new tones, specifically humbucker tones. I ended up getting the classic over a traditional just because of the coil splitting. At first I wasnt that impressed with the tone of the coil split but is grown on me very much. So many tone options out of one guitar. Only guitar I've played in the last year.

Better clean tone than a tele...a bit too far. You have a bad tele pickup.
@jamestrodden60173 жыл бұрын
Nice review and demonstration guys thanks, but PLEASE note the difference between "coil split," and "coil tap." The Gibson Classic has "coil tap," which simple means a reduced signal, as the pick up "taps" into fewer windings. It's still a humbucker, and not meant to sound like a single coil. . .that would require a "coil split." Great playing by the way. Cheers!
@once_upon_a_Bike3 жыл бұрын
Hey guys. Let me tell something about coil splitting. There are many of us out there who would like to have a proper Strat and Les Paul because of the different types of music we'd like to play. For example, I would like a Les Paul instead of a Strat because LP has this unique rock sound and guitar shape BUT I really love the clean Blues sound of the Strat. But because the shape of the Strat is so common and the reason that I have another guitar in this shape, I'd prefer something different. So, I have to find this LP that gives me the perfect Blues "Strat" tone and also be able to play some rock 'n roll. You also have to consider the price of these two guitars. It's almost 2 grand for each guitar so, for most people out there there is only one option, either the LP or the Strat. Don't misunderstand me, I know that it's almost impossible to make this happen, but personally I would really like to own a Les Paul with coil splitting only for the clean Blues tones, that a single coil pickup could give me. Thank you for all these videos you make. They are very very helpful. Keep it that way!!
@msaintpc Жыл бұрын
You could replace your pups with a set of Duncans or Lollars that can give you those sounds you desire. Be about a $250 to $300 investment but well worth it. If a person invests several hundred dollars to upgrade the Classic's hardwear, shoot, he'd have a guitar that sounds and plays just as well as the Standard.

I think the classic is going to become the standout favorite from the new series because of the price point, the comfortable neck profile and the Alnico V pickups. Kinda odd to see the classic without the 496r/500t combo, but it does seem with modern amps high output ceramic humbuckers have fallen out of favor.

This video helped me to decide to buy this same guitar. Mine is absolutely perfect and much better looking in person than in pictures. I really considered flame top traditional or standard models but I guess I'm bored of the same sunburst flame tops and wanted something different so went for this. All three are great sounding guitars... with very slightly different sounding pickups. I've had less Paul's with BB pros, 490's, and now the 61's. I like them all... the 490's are very warm... but 61's bright and clear. I didn't care for the BB pros much for my style playing... but they are decent too. I don't think you can get a better sounding or playing Les Paul no matter what price you pay. I play a 59 and 60's custom shop a lot too... and this sounds very similar. Interesting about the custom shops is that because the woods used on them is higher quality they are typically as light or lighter than a cheaper weight relieved guitar without having to drill holes. In terms of sound they are really close... the custom shop may be slightly more woody sounding. The classic I got is just as perfectly constructed as any custom shop I've played but I have gotten lucky. I have a couple of expensive PRS guitars too .. which I love but I think you get more for your money with Gibson... considering you can get a standard flame or classic bound USA guitar for half of what you pay for a core PRS. Again I love both but my PRS way overpriced.
@macanoodough5 жыл бұрын
I bought my Traditional and it was the same price as a Standard back in 09 and it is basically the same difference as the Classic. Plain Top, Push/Pulls and the same pickups you'd have found some standards, no blower. I don't feel like I bought something that should have been cheaper, I considered it the best purchase of my guitar journey. So I woulldn't let the price difference suggest "it's a Les Paul BUT..." I would say it's definitely legit and that's something you have to weigh before just buying a Standard. Are you sure you wouldn't be happier with features? Because while everyone rags on coil taps, they do provide tonal voicings that you can achieve to play single coil voiced songs. It takes some doing, and I've yet to see a shootout where you set up a whole rig designed to assist in getting that sound to truly test the theories. Sure, straight in an amp it's as clear as night and day, but a couple, not many, pedals can help minimize that. And different Amps are also a great help. I have a strat but still prefer to use my Les Paul because switching guitars means I now have to change everything. I can't just plug and play on the same settings for the pedal or the amp. I defintiely get a great sound just pulling the knobs.....and not just on my guitar.

The reason these LPs don't sound 'Fender authentic' in single-coil modes is that they're still in series, and when used alone it's not necessarily the coil you should be using for that sound (flip your neck HB over and you'll hear the difference). In LPs, the Tele and Strat-o-tones are really only available when you wire one or both pickups to switch between series hb, or 'parallel with itself' hb. With (for example) the bridge p/u single-coil, and the neck p/u parallel hb, it gets Tele ~authority~....both in parallel with the tone rolled back gets the "in-between" 2 and 4 Strat sound. This arrangement seems to work best with low-output HBs (AlNiCo2, like PAFs). You can wire a 3-way DPDT to provide 1) parallel-with-itself HB [quack], 2) series HB [LP as usual] , and 3) single-coil [bridge p/u hot/outside coil; neck p/u dummy-coil...or however it sounds best to you lol]. Basically, you need the neck p/u to be able to run as a parallel with itself hb, and the bridge p/u to tap the proper coil when you want....The "blow" push/pull on that volume pot ought to be a series/parallel switch for the neck p/u; you'd have a legit Tele, and Strat-o-5-way tone hiding in your LP. I drilled out my 2011 double-cut gold top Standard for 2 3-ways when I installed a set of Darkmoon Aurora A2 HBs; now, unless it's going series HB (classic LP-tone), you'd have NO FLIPPING IDEA whether I'm playing a Tele, Strat, or hot-rod LP in a 'blind test'. If you don't have the cojones to drill your LP body, you could arrange the push/pulls in the vid thusly: 2 of them as single/hb switches, and the other 2 as series/parallel (when in hb mode).....the 'blow' switch is far less useful in the scheme of things, and uses up a critical switch-location.

Having just recently decided that, this week they release a newly price-reduced *Les Paul Standard 50s Goldtop*.. I'm sold. As someone who has wanted a 58 reissue for a very long time, but absolutely can't pony up $5k for a guitar without selling *literally* all 5 guitars that I own.... this is perfect for me. My father in law has a 2017 Classic and I think they have 57's humbuckers. They dropped Burstbucker 61R and 61T's and I think they did an outstanding job and the guitar is a great value .. coil taps etc. $2000 all in . Nice! and yes Lee.. i think this is the player that wants the Standard and is going to save $500 . They sound sweet. Thanks again Lee and Pete. Some real sweet tasty jams as usual.

Coil tap on an lp is like a P-90. Coil split only available on the HP models of 2018

The Gibson split pickup does not sound like a Fender, and the Gibson out-of-phase does not sound like the Fender out-of-phase. They are their own things, and I don't think you should judge the Gibson sounds by how close they come to the Fender sounds. The way I look at it is here are some new types of sounds that can provide even more tonal options. I've been able to get some really cool split coil sounds with my SGs.

Probably been said before... what a tough job you chaps have! spose someone has to do it

Doesn’t the coil split just mean you can get a close sound to the p90 gold top standard but the versatility of a humbucker, in a Studio situation isn’t it best to have as many tone options as possible, it sounded useable to me. Horses for courses

MTB Life yeah. i own one of these and can tell you that the coil taps sound fine, not rly like p90s but the phase switching is the absolute coolest.

Working with the technician, Page designed a switching system for coil splitting, series/parallel, and phase-reverse options. The result comprised, a revolutionary system of a push/pull pot on each of the guitar's four standard controls now known as the signature "Jimmy Page Wiring."

Nice guitars. Thanks for the video. I don't think I would use the coil split much for recording, but I might use it live when I need a more 'strummy' sound. It should be a good sound to sing over.

Strange vibe in this video guys, Peter's distane for these is strong. I love the look of that honey burst, for me the flame and triple flame bling with all the glitter is to Liberace. The coil split sounds good too, great having access to more tones. Each to their own tone. Pete showed more love for the 2020 Epiphone than he did for this Gibson, I guess we just got to find what works for ourselves and go with that, if it sounds good, it is good.

It really marries everything you like about a studio with a standard. Recording wise, having the versatility means you can do most of what you need on one guitar. That doesn’t mean we quit collecting them, though 😅

If you’re going to buy a Les Paul the Classic is the best bang for the buck.I have a Heritage Cherry Sunburst and a Gold Top and love them more than the Standard I sold.

Bought a Wharfedale last december. In March it broke down. I mailed you guys. You kept on pushing that it'd be the tubes. So I figured out it'd be useless to ship this freaking heavy amp from Belgium all the way to the UK again. So I had a local amp tech repair it. Seems like it had 3 broken switches. Costed lots of money. But this kind of service won't let me become a loyal customer...

There you have the benefits of globalization .. and the reason why its only good for business.
@NathanSidF5 жыл бұрын
@@cgavin1 I don't really get your reaction. My point is just that I knew that the tubes were alright so shipping with these fragile components wouldn't do any more good on the amp. Especially one of this weight. If it was like An Orange tiny terror or something I wouldn't mind. But this beast is next level...

One the Epi ES-335 Pro, the pickup split doesn't do a Fender tone at the bridge or really even enhance the sound much, but the neck pickup is another story. It doesn't do full Fender chime, but it does have a more jangly attack which goes well with the neck pickup sound. It's definitely not a Fender sound, but I like it.
