I like both, but the video of Rob and Lee always makes me smile. When I was living at home, my dad and I always made a tradition to go out to various guitar shops on Black Friday and look at the gear we wanted but could not afford. "It's not as bright"/"sounds a bit muffled" ... Lee, measure the volume pot(s) and find replacements higher in the spec range (pots have a 20% tolerance range). See what tone cap is in there and go the next smaller common uF (if 0.047uf then go 0.033uf). If you want to go more radical, put the tone cap you removed in series with the muddy pickup hot lead. The controls, they actually control the tone, even when the knobs are dimed! I used to swap pickups until I figured out how much influence can be obtained with $10 in parts. Don't forget to adjust pickup heights and screw pole heights, that's a free mod (lower is often better).

I asked to play it and it was the most resonant electric guitar I've ever played. Loud and proud. It came home. I then looked for the guitars online, kept track of the number of pieces and picked the last remaining piece on a work trip to the US (I actually placed my order at the airport right before getting on my plane). After this video, I have a feeling I'm going to start looking for a Les Paul. **intense spy movie music plays in the background**
@sourav23282 жыл бұрын
where did you buy the Les Paul from ?
@Yupppi3 жыл бұрын
Seems like Tom Murphy knows what he does. The first thing in the video that I spotted was that the guitar looks like it's very old but well kept or it's a relic with a brilliant taste, where you notice it's aged but doesn't look like someone was paid to relic it (ruin it). So fine and mild relicing. I'm 100% relicing has a place, because no guitar that was new in the store felt right to me, it always felt like a new store guitar, alien. But when you've had it for a year or two at home, it starts to feel comfortable and cozy. Same for used guitars. When talking about "is it worth it", it's like if you have the itch for that specific one, you can't replace it with something you can afford better. You just have to give up. If you have an itch for les paul you probably can have something cheaper, but if you find the one, you have to get it or give up. It's not about "is that 1% more worth it" but "I have to have that exact thing". You don't get it for that 1% but because nothing else will do. If it's worth anything, I like Cap's guitar better visually and tonally :) But the psychology is too strong, after you guys said Pete's is better, I started asking myself if Cap's guitar is really better. Don't let yourself get into that mode, you'll just make wrong decisions.

Lee's '58 sounds and seems to play great for £3.5k. More than good enough for most guitarists. But Pete's £10k slayer of a guitar is a one of a kind piece...truly! It's like fine art, never to be replicated. Worth it if you can afford...even if it's just barely!

That Jam at the beginning was AC/DC as hell!!! You guys keep it up

Both sound great , but my vote goes for Lee’s LP. The captain axe sound very much like the sound I love from les Paul’s . The right amount of gain pushing the amp . .... marvelous
@rjlane34754 жыл бұрын
The extra $3-4K was worth it. It's hard to find a new les paul that sounds that open. It's a keeper.

Before I watch, I’m going to say that Pete’s sounds better because of the darker burst 😉

There were times where Pete’s guitar sounded a bit clearer, but the Captain’s 58 just rocks something special. I don’t think the Tom Murphy is better, I’d take the 58 and not because of the price difference. Great video!

I know this video is old and I probably commented on this before. I think they both sound great and Lee, you should not be depressed that Guitar sounds amazing. And it looks balls

watch maximum overdrive, its pretty entertaining. plays a lot of ac/dc and cool kills, cool trucks and cars, some decent acting from amillio estavez. reminds me of a game called twisted metal. wish they'd make that a movie.

I was watching another of their vids and a great point was given...If you buy a 50's or 60's standard and you cant afford a custom then never try a custom lol. This will be the exact reason why I won't be trying a custom as I've bought a 50's standard sunburst, unless I win the lottery. lol.

@@bamber119 agreed. Bet you're perfectly happy with your standard 50s? Like any normal person would be. No need to spoil it for yourself by trying a custom

Lee, take your les Paul to Monty’s, get him to put his repro paf in, you will save 6,000$. I ordered two sets for my CS 2013 and 2016 R9’s, best decision ever. EVER!!! Pots matter too. I am in Canada, so was a gamble for me that paid off. I had a volume pot measure 410k, changed it to 520k and also improved it

Kept my standard Gibson pups in my 2016 Ebony LP and ditched the complete harness and board (😖) out for an Australian “Jucy Guitar” 50’s harness with POI capacitors. $200 Au well worth the investment because it fixed my crappy electrical issues crackle and now sounds the way I want it. Same result as a custom shop for way less money..🇦🇺👍

I’ve got one of the Pod XT Live units, still going strong. I still mourn the day I failed to purchase a twice the price Les Paul Heritage in Andertons about 15 years ago that was 3 x better sounding than the standard Les Pauls. The difference in sound was incredible.
@jokezspeedruns96794 жыл бұрын
Danish Pete is the best Andertons guest; Great dynamic between the two, friendship wise & Captain feels in his element, with this kind of tone they're going for, rather than the Heavy Metal Chapman or Rabea bring to the mix.

It's actually amazing to so see that people who buy and sell Gibsons by the hundreds, still get giddy about them after all those years. It's humbling, it means that the feeling I had when I got my Gibson is shared by basically every Gibson owner.... even the ones who have been handling Gibsons for decades. I wonder if big musicians feel the same. Does Peter Frampton ever go and test out some LPs at a store, and occasionally come across one that makes him have the same giddy feeling he did when he got his first one?

The wonderful Pete H: probably more likely to be John Mayer’s “broken arm” replacement than Slash’s. Fab video as ever.
@adamwhite23294 жыл бұрын
Pete's guitar just sounds brighter. That high-end clarity might be more pleasing to the ear, but Lee's has more of a true vintage sound. In all, the difference is worth nowhere near twice as much! You're paying for the aging.
@toledo29833 жыл бұрын
its quite easy to make the guitar brighter with some changes. the one guitar is heavier than the other (more sustain) and alone changing the Bridge and Pots will bring it to 99% same soundwise.
