New Glenn is a 7-meter-diameter (23 ft) two-stage orbital launch vehicle with an optional third stage and a reusable first stage. The first stage will be powered by seven BE-4 methane/oxygen engines-designed and manufactured by Blue Origin-producing 17,000 kN (3,800,000 lbf) of liftoff thrust. Launches of the New Glenn are planned to be made from Spaceport Florida Launch Complex 36 in 2020

@@_vdm_ The idea's been around since the 60s, but I very highly doubt Blue Origin ever saw that idea. The film SpaceX cited to refute Blue's patent claim is a really obscure russian film that a team of SpaceX lawyers spent months looking for. If anything, SpaceX is the one who copied... they saw Blue's idea, said "hey that's a great idea, but it's patented..." then they sent a massive legal team to go hunting for the smallest, most obscure thing that could refute Blue's claim. Even then, though, Blue TECHNICALLY should've won the case - the Russian film does NOT depict landing on a moving ship, which is what Blue planned on doing, and it's what Blue patented. Landing on a moving ship is slightly harder (only slightly cuz the ship travels in a straight line), but has the advantage of being less susceptible to waves and other extreme weather. Of course, I ain't hating on SpaceX - what they did is truly amazing. Saying you're gonna land on a ship is one thing, but actually doing it is a completely different thing - which SpaceX has accomplished before Blue (Blue didn't accomplish it yet, so SpaceX is far ahead, but I doubt it'll take Blue long - Blue origin moves slow and has very few failures, so I'd reckon that Blue will pull off a landing within the first 7 launches of New Glenn).

I use this design for my first stage boosters in KSP nowadays. During decent the wings decrease the terminal velocity dramatically which decreases the Dv for the landing burn. And they make the rocket able to steer so much that landing back on the runway becomes easy. During launch the center of mass is way higher so then the wings stabilize the rocket a lot.

The three stage variant will be rarely used. The two stage version is fine for LEO, GTO, and even Direct GEO. The third stage one just allows super high energy orbits like payloads to the moon or for things like the Solar Parker Probe. So best of both worlds. Two stage for economics and three stage for getting more mass to high energy orbits. For a lunar payload as an example New Glenn will significantly outclass a reusable Falcon Heavy despite the two being roughly similar to LEO.

BFR might, or might not happen. It looks promising. But at least it is being developed by someone that HAS already reached orbit. By the same token, SLS likely will happen, despite some ludicrous time and budget overruns. Because again, the NASA/Boeing team has experience with building orbital stuff. But all BO has managed so far is to hop *unmanned* to just past the Karman line, and even on that they are many years past their initial advertised date.

your quality is just amazing, keep it up :D one thing I can imagine is the landing. in your video, the new glenn is landing like a new shepard; it's hovering and adjusting its position. However, I don't think this is possible with the weight and velocity of the rocket, it simply requires too much fuel for this manouver. I think there are good reasons why spaceX decided to stop moving just as it arrives on the pad/droneship
@luciengrondin5802
@luciengrondin5802 5 жыл бұрын
IIRC the main reason SpaceX went for a suicide burn is that the engine can't throttle enough to hover. I don't know if BE-4 can, but since it's the strategy BO went for with New Sheppard, I presume they plan on doing the same with New Glenn.
@alessandrofuligni7241
@alessandrofuligni7241 5 жыл бұрын
but it's a loosing strategy, as hovering burns a lot of fuel, it's simply not as effective as a suicide burn. I've heard many saying "Wow, cool, they hover... not like Spacex whose engines can't throttle enough!" but that's actually a moot point as hovering is worse than doing a suicide burn! Sure, you need to be extremely precise, but when you've mastered that, there's no turning back, it's just better. On the other hand, BO's hovering indicates their far from perfected landing procedure.
@luciengrondin5802
@luciengrondin5802 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't done the math so I can't tell how much fuel a hover wastes. It is true that a suicide burn is more fuel efficient, but I guess the engineers at BO have assessed it was an acceptable loss in favor of reliability.

True reason is that one Merlin engine at its lowest sustainable throttle level has still enough thrust to bounce the F9 right back up. Meaning if an F9 booster with no second stage and payload with 5% fuel mass lights up just one Merlin, it WILL lift off

Looking good! You're getting better at this stuff! :D But i have couple of suggestions: At launch, surroundings look dead, because nothing is moving (waves,trees, birds) On ascent through clouds it would look better if clouds obstructed the rocket at least a little bit. Drops and Scratches on cameras are too sharp. 3:27 we see a hook hanging from a crane, why is it static? There's a rocket next to it! Keep up the good stuff and have a nice day!
