They gotta get one on the ends of the outer panels just because the force might not be strong enough at the magnet bunghole to keep it from rotating.

I can see what Jason was saying about them being "sloppy", but even the camera had to zoom WAY in to see it. From more than a foot away it looks better for the contrast. I'm pretty sure if you looked at anything THAT close you're gonna start to see issues.

The only thing I could think about once they started talking about frame-in-panel solutions what cabinet doors. It just felt weird and I couldn't see why they would want a DM screen to look like a cabinet... It felt so generic I might as well buy some doors at Home Depot and slap some hinges on them. The veneer completely changes that and instead of looking like existing parts and designs were thrown together, it looks like it was intentionally designed that way from the ground up even though they are essentially the same exact geometry and process except for veneering before CNC. Would be interesting to see it cleaned up somehow and maybe some some different wood combos or proportioning of how much accent there is relative to the main wood

Either a wooden bung or use that as a space for rubber feet. I'd be worried about the brass/aluminum being in direct contact with and scratching your table especially if there's a chance that the end grain might crack/chip.

If they base the profile on their shield logo, that might help avoid that cabinet look and make the customizable insert feel more grounded within the design. As it stands, I can't help but feel like the insert contrasts way too much. If you wanna offer it, make it look like it's not tacked on

Instead of just plugging the holes and sanding flush, how about making the plug slightly inset and setting decorative rubber feet in that? Stamp them from rubber sheets I guess, and if you choose a shape that fits together like the yin&yang does there's little waste.. The panels don't really need to bend forward, so quarter-circles instead of half-circles is an option, and you can use a chamfer that goes well with the veneer. I'm down for a veneered set, brass if the metals are visible :D

First of all, thank you for making it accept A4 paper, I was one of the people that commented about this on the past few videos and it makes a huge difference to my ability to use it, and moves it from an "if I have the money when the kickstarter begins" to a "I will start budgeting and saving for it today" purchase. On that note, I really like what you're landing on. I think this is a fantastic design. I agree with widening the finger holes, and think that the one-size-fits-all brass or aluminimum bunghole plug is probably the way to go over a wooden one. As for the F+P vs Single Wood vs Veneer discussion, I think we'd need to know what that cost difference is. I think F+P looks nicer than veneer, but need to see them both (with the 2 layer veneer version), and understand the price difference to decide if it's worth going F+P. Overall, as someone who was really unhappy with the original design (but only voiced concerns about international paper sizing, I was condifent you guys would figure it out), it's nice to see how far it's come from then. Also, by the way, A paper isn't just Europe, it's literally the entire world. US Letter is used in most of North America, and Columbia+Venezuala+Chile, and the Phillipines for some reason, and literally every other country in the world uses A4 paper as their standard size!

I think it would be useful to set them up and toss something like a bean bag at them, shake the table, push on them, etc. Holding them up like that isn’t a very realistic stress test, if you are holding them like that you are probably trying to take them apart to put them away. I’d like to see a more realistic strength comparison between the weak magnets, strong magnets, and a third version with the strong magnets recessed another ~1/16th of an inch to make the hinge more durable.

Veneer really makes it more visually interesting then solid wood (and might distract the distinct lines where 2 boards are glued together). I am however concerned with the weight of the panels. Besides the look of frames and panel, they are usually much lighter since the panel is much thinner. How much do these things weigh? Are the cumbersome to travel with? Can they be thinned down?
@Nguyenoodworking
@Nguyenoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
If you make it thinner, the grooves for the pseudo frame would make the screen too thin and weaker in the center. If you don’t leave enough wood, you’re looking at structural problems if you drop it or travel with it.

Less than 10lbs with all the stuff they add I’d say. Won’t know until final. Cherry is 3lbs per board foot and it looks like they remove 20% of it in the milling and woodworking. The panels are slightly longer than a foot from that A4 size check and significantly wider. Final weight maybe ~7.5lbs
@ep1cman
@ep1cman 2 жыл бұрын
For the bungs, I have a feeling wood might be the best way to go because it will cushion the impacts from the magnets. I suspect with metal bungs, those boards slamming together on such thin edges will crack a lot faster than wooden ones. I’m a big fan of the solid wood + veneer. It feels like a good compromise on cost/manufacturing time while still adding something so it doesn’t look like a bunch of cutting boards. I understand a lot of people see wyrmwood as a high end brand, but I feel there is something to be said for lowering the cost to entry. I would never be able to justify a $600 DM screen but $200-300 becomes much more approachable.

I like the brass bung tbh. Something about it feels intentional and classy. I'm still not sold on the solid wood, but if the price was really good (that $70 a panel you talked about), I'd probably still go for it over the dogmight screen. I really prefer your magnet design.

Been a shadow subscriber for a few years. Super stoked that the DM screens are getting love again. I wanted to join the original kickstarter, but didn't have enough cash at the time. Hope this product gets pushed! Though some kinks do need to be worked out. Visually, I'm not sure I like the back. They look like kitchen cabinets. You could try plugging the bottom bung holes with rubber feet. The brass hole covers looked best with that particular wood in my opinion. Might be a good idea to have a few options for buyers? I'm not a huge fan of the middle panel inlay. I feel like the cost increase for including it will push out potential buyers. I think a simple logo design or sliding panel would be better. The sliding panel could have a slot for paper behind it so you can pull out the panel to expose a map or puzzle. You could even use the slot to store extra player sheets. I'm also a little worried about the acrylic panels. In my experience acrylic cracks and scratches very easily. When you are constantly moving and taking apart this screen, I feel like the panels would be dead after only 5-10 sessions. I'm also not entirely sure what the purpose of the acrylic is. So you can dry erase marker over your material? Are you guys planning on adding additional magnetic addon's for this? Something similar to the Dice tower, initiative tracker, or the small drawers that came with the original? I know, I would love to have those options.

about the magnet problem, could you guys instead of having just a 16th of an inch of wood, just add maybe a 32th of an inch to that gap, or make the gap an eighth of an inch instead? and keep the more powerful magnets?

Feedback: 1. I want to see development on frame and panel too. It's not a fair comparison if both approaches don't get the same love, and Doug has been pushing solid wood hard. I especially want fancier frame-and-panel with embellishments. I know it'll be expensive. I don't care. At least as a Masterwork option with all the bells and whistles, stringing etc... /please/. 2. Seeing the veneers, I might be okay with the fancier, multi-layer veneer with all that dark wood that Doug showed. It does look cool. Most tempting version of the solid wood I've seen. Though if it's not a super fancy version, I'd rather do the frame and panel. If anything I'd like it fancier than what Doug showed, and it feels like you're about to scale back and simplify, which doesn't fill me with confidence. 3. Dark veneer yes. I don't just want lines -- I want a full dark veneer. Don't like the suggested tweak of a lighter top layer. 4. Stronger magnets are more betterer. Not dangerous if you're not a small child. 5. Brass is fine for the bungs. Wood ones should match, yes. Though I could see a very light colored bung on a very dark wood looking cool. Match or strong contrast looks purposeful. 6. When the design is figured out, please don't skip on innovative features like the last DM screen: rotating panel et al. 7. If you do the inserts, could we get a fancier one with a metal or gemstone Wyrmwood shield? (Though I'd rather just have it in a straight-up panel without an insert honestly, but the insert system looks fine and does give some versatility and upgradability, which is cool.)

i have no problem with the swing out of the cherry one, that could just be because of how the magnets are sitting on the bungs. the veneer with the white stripe looks amazing I'm excited to see the progress made in the next lot we are shown. i really like the height of the units as well, not too high were it feels like I've got to stand up to see what's on the board in front of the screen

I really like the solid panel look but I would love to see the routing around the inner "panel" be a little crisper in the corners. I think that's what makes the frame & panel look "better". If you were able to square those up a little more I think it would satisfy both camps. I also like the veneer option but if that adds cost, I'd be fine without it. Offering plain and veneer options would be nice because it wouldn't really add extra work for the craftspeople. Love the new screens! Maybe I'll be able to afford one some day. :)

@PaxPixie
@PaxPixie 2 жыл бұрын
@@theNaluK I'm not a woodworker but I follow a ton of extremely handy people like Adam Savage. I'm betting you could use a smaller diameter router and do a pass along that edge to get at least closer to square. At least the curve would be much smaller and tighter. The only other way to make that crisp would be to essentially "chisel" out the corners. I'm betting there's a machine that could do that on a consistent basis so you wouldn't have to do it by hand.

The design is coming together. And IMO “dangerously strong” is how I would prefer it to be. Because you never know when something drops on it and it completely dismantles if it weren’t. Also, why don’t you use the dungholes (they are already there!) to accommodate for the rubber thingies that will keep it stable? Now, about that giveaway… yes please! 😄

The problem with the dangerously strong magnets isn't you hurting yourself. It's the fact that the wood that's being smashed together is incredibly weak. And likely to destroy itself over use. It's not an option for a high quality product. Unless they bulk it up to make it tougher.

I still would like to see a Frame and Panel option added. I would pay so much more for one, just because I prefer the look, and the quality. Also, PLEASE bring back the rotational screen, and the 2-way Dice Towers/Chest of Holding. They were the features that truly sold me on the first iteration. Don't remove innovation, build on it. Food for thought. Otherwise, I love these iterations. Cool to see the design process.

Frame and panel won't work with the magnet hinges, the rails have a mortis cut into them and the curved edges would have the mortis pattern in it. Watch Ep.3 of the GM screen series again , at 2:30, Cristaldi explains the frame and panel. You can see the end of the rails used for the frame; it just isn't viable with the hinge.
@VagabondTE
@VagabondTE 2 жыл бұрын
That might be an option down the line. Once they have a basic DM screen figured out then they could build on it. I can easily see them making a dice tower that works with this hinge system.

Love the veneer version, like the solid wood, would probably like the solid wood more in a different wood, but the veneer just gives more contrast to really make the screen pop. For the plugs for the bungholes, I like the idea of the metal plugs better than the execution, wood plugs definitely look better in my opinion. As for magnet strength, I personally like the idea of the magnets being able to support the entire screen, but I understand if that's just not practical from a design standpoint due to possible cracking. All this being said, I'm probably not going to be able to buy one for QUITE some time (millennial in this housing market, so no place to put it), so take my opinion with the smallest grain of salt, since I'm not even going to be a customer.

I like the way it looks, but I feel like it may just be a bit to thick. The DM screen is meant to be a light wall that can be easily moved if need be and from what I could see here, that seems to have a good bit of weight behind it. I know that Wyrmwood likes to make good quality stuff for the people and I feel as though there should be a lighter/thinner version, possibly using the weaker magnets. They could be the Warrior's screen, the thicker one you guys have made, and the Wizard's screen, a thinner lighter version. Love the idea for the screen, just wanted to pass an idea to y'all over there.

For bung holes on the GM screen, either brass or matching wood (accent wood if you use a veneer?) are my favorites. And I love the veneer. Sure when you zoom in, it's a little sloppy, but that's not how people look at it. I'm also team functional on the GM side, as long as it's not distracting visually.
