This is on point. When I was a new ham, I had tunnel vision and couldn't see options over fear of messing stuff up. Great message to new hams.

Thanks for the feedback TO. As I'm going through this series, I know much is old hat to some of us, but oh how I remember my struggle to figure it all out. Thought I'd pass along my research and hard knocks.

@@HOAHamRadio I am a new ham and have found this series to be invaluable to helping me understand all this electrical and RF stuff. I was a carpenter in a previous life and electricity is something I have avoided judiciously. I don't like getting shocked and this series will help in this regard.

Great video Bob. My space in the condo is limited and the HOA prohibits outside side antennas and enhancements so I am severely limited. Being retired, my funding is also limited but so far this series has tracked along pretty nicely to what I have done. One tip; when I charge a battery I put a small piece of blue painters tape over the power pole connectors and it stays there until I start using the battery. That way I know at a glance if the battery is fully charged or not. When I use the battery the first time after I charge it I pull the tape and put it on the side of the battery so it is readily available for the next timeI charge it.

Good stuff. Similar setup here. Picked an operating tip from you (testing... no response required) and the blue painters tape "charged" marker procedure from your commenter. Your concision is so helpful and makes me want to watch. Liked the end to end demo for new hams, too.

I have a 76yr old house with 15 amp circuits for 90% of the outlets. I just have to make sure when I get my shack up and running in the chosen room that I don't plug it into the outlet at is on the same circuit as the LR space heater and window AC. LOL old houses are so much fun.

Sounds like you are thinking right; just control what is turned on for the circuit you've connected your radio power supply to and you should be good.

Brand new ham here 🙋🏽‍♂️. Stupid question inbound..... on the distribution board with all the different fuses, how do you know which fused port each piece of equipment should be plugged into? Thanks for this great video! I am trying to figure it all out, and it can be very intimidating. This video was great!

Velcro makes for a clean install, I know guys that have their tm-281/271 Velcroed straight to the top of their dash dashboard. One of these days I want to make a battery box out of a water proff container, Velcro everything inside keeping it water tight or reusable for another project. Nice video Take care

Just upgrade to a West Mountain Radio Epic PWRgate. It is a 12V uninterruptible power system that can supply up to 40A continuously from either a power supply or a Lead Acid or Lithium battery with almost no voltage loss, and also charges the battery with its high performance charger. A separate solar panel input can be used to charge the battery directly from a solar panel with output less than 30V.

Newbie question….do you run the power cord from the power supply to a surge protector which is connected to the 110V outlet or direct to the outlet?
@HOAHamRadio
@HOAHamRadio Жыл бұрын
You could run the power supply power cord to a surge protector if you wanted to, but it is not a requirement. Treat it like you would any other appliance in your home. A TV, refrigerator, microwave etc...

Modern electrical will support 1x 100w radio, but how many could it support? Could it support upwards of 4, plus or minus a couple 50w radios as well?
@HOAHamRadio
@HOAHamRadio Жыл бұрын
Mason, I don't think you would be transmitting on more than one 50 watt radio at a time, would you? So you can hook up as many as you have / want; you are only transmitting 1 at a time.

With your construction background I am really surprised that in video #5 you didn't just go get a core drill to punch that hole through the stucco and the hollow block wall. Seriously! >> An on the subject of hollow block walls; what does FL have against filling the cells with grout? The walls would resist hurricane force winds a lot better, but then I am in CA and we have earthquakes to worry about and design for, but our earthquake construction methods and code does a great job of resisting wind loads too. Just sayin'
@HOAHamRadio
@HOAHamRadio Жыл бұрын
Didn't own the hole saw for the size I needed, and the other tools were already in the garage, so I went with what I had. Cores in FL are filled every so many linear feet, as well as the top course all the way around the perimeter. That's what the code is; so in the end, its kind like post and beam construction.
@AlvinMcManus
@AlvinMcManus Жыл бұрын
@@HOAHamRadio I was a masonry special inspector for 22 years and I only did 2 buildings with that "post & beam" configuration. And I must have done hundreds of buildings and walls. That is the style seem on the east coast and one of the buildings that was built like that was designed by an engineer from Florida. It was different.
