It must be encouraging to know that the large outdoor furniture pieces will be set up and go outside and a lot more will go when the garage sale happens this summer. Hopefully, your mom will do something with the unused items like the new pan and food storage containers - either sell them or use them and sell the old ones.

Oh my gosh Mariela! You and your family made such huge progress! The floor space is awesome! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I feel like a plan to schedule weekly revisits to the garage would really bump the results to a whole new level. Even if it just means doing a reset of the garage. Plan on at least 15 minutes to check the area and remove the obvious trash and see if there is any clear donations. Shelving units would help certainly with the drinks issues. I feel like a lot of it is just organizational thing. This would clear the space. Shelves are not that expensive, especially if your family is spending on thrifting items or getting garden furniture. I imagine your mum sees the progress since you decluttered the kitchen and your sister with her bedroom. It sounds like they are getting there are all getting there mentally and emotionally. Any goal your dad has he wants to do if he has the space? Like doing more DIY or bbq?

I can definitely see the improvement from last year, even at the start of the video. It's a slow process. Maybe help your dad get those new outdoor furniture pieces built, and see if you can convince your mom to open and use her new pans. Today is special enough! That will clear a little space too. Don't give up, each time they will be willing to do a little more.

Mariela, you did great! An idea would be to do a q & a with your parents and your family members with just you (it doesn't neccessarily have to be filmed, unless it's okay with you and them), but ask them about their decluttering habits, organization ideas, their dream idea of what they want the garage to look like when it comes to the garage (this might potentially lead to be a motivator and could start decluttering and maintaining the space that they have, and be more on the same page as you. How your dad would eventually like his "tool shop" section all nice and neat in one part, where they like to put new things in when they get them like drinks, appliances, or backyard things, along with things like their donating piles (with their location of placing their piles would be accessible for them, but out of the walking way, where clutter won't pile on top, etc.) just get to know their thoughts and habits by just talking it out with them so you can get their input ahead of time and you can better help organize their things and make it easier for them! No pressure on the idea though!

You made some good progress. Great video. With your dad’s tools i would just start organizing - putting screwdrivers together, pliers together, electric tools in one bin hand saws in another. He can’t possibly know what he’s got in the current jumble mess. And if you aren’t getting rid of anything then you can do it on your own timetable. And it might help him to declutter when he sees his duplicates

I love how realistic this is. My dad's garage has been a very slow effort to organize too. We live in an apartment, so it's a separate area we don't go into much. We got some shelves and bins a few years ago. It helped to an extent, but there's still more that can be done.

I absolutely love this series!! I really hope your dad will let you help him organize his tools side. Maybe if you could get a few bins from Lowe’s or home depot that are very sturdy. That would help the process move along. I noticed they shop at Costco , maybe another shelf. I can really relate to this, my parents are very attached to there items too. OMG this is great! since your parents are thrifty ask your dad to keep an eye out for a rolling tool chest workbench with lots of drawers. I know my dad doesn't like me to buy him organizational things because he can A) get them for cheaper and B) buckets get the job done the only issue with buckets is that things get lost but if you buy a drawer chest you can label them that would be great I recently organized his drawers by tools and at first he bickered "why you buy all these plastic trays" etc etc but once it was done he had no complaints. For drawer inserts I buy the cheap target ones and for bits and ends I repurpose old pill bottles, talenti gelato jars, and peanut butter jars those are easy to peel off and see through them. Great job :)

Wow, great video, Mariela. I was so excited to get the notice of a new garage video. It did not disappoint in terms of being fun and interesting to watch. Dad must have read the comments of your previous video LOL. It was so good to see the whole family involved (even if off camera, although we saw the back of dad a lot). When you first showed the condition of the garage, I was not optimistic that you would be allowed to do your thing, but you really (gently) pushed through and got stuff out of there. And dad drove it away! I love it. Hope we see the next garage video very soon.!

Hello, I just found your channel, and it is great what you're doing for your family. I did go back and watch some old videos. I would love to see how they are maintaining their kitchen. Maybe there is room for some of the stuff in the garage. Maybe do a Christmas declutter in the fall. Make some room on the shelves for other stuff

You did great! That was a lot that left the garage. Wish our town did that. They only do shredding. Keep it up maybe twice a year if you can. The labeling helps a lot. Maybe make bigger signs tape them to the walls to help the household know where things go and they dont toss the items any old place. Like make zones for drinks. Paper products. Kids toys etc. More bins and shelving may help too I know they can be expensive though. My garage has got out of hand too since my daughter returned to our empty nest with her hubs and our 2 grand daughters. 6 family members in one house! Now we are facing a move so we will be facing the very same thing of tossing keeping trash and donate. Wish me luck!

I'm guessing the Christmas wreath and Christmas baubles were used recently. My question is, were the Christmas decorations in the plastic crates on the shelves used too? Could some of those be let go to make room for the recent ones?

Yes, there's 3 wreaths though but only one was used. One of the plastic crates is Christmas, the other is Halloween. I did suggest that but he didn't want to let much decorations go

It doesn't take long to get Un-organized when some aren't on board or know the vision. A garage has always been a "catch all" for decisions not yet made, put it here, decide later. Sometimes later is much, much later, last thing on the list. You did a great job the 1st time getting it started. This time was a bit easier, you knew where things were and some areas under control. It's going to take several passes to get it completely done. There needs to be an "upkeep/tidy schedule" after it's done to keep it on track. Garages have always been most folks worst area, so many categories and inventory to corral. You're doing a good job, tackle a corner at a time and family assisting makes it easier.

Can you set the table upright that your dad wants to keep so you can put containers on top and underneath it? You can protect the top of the table by placing an unused sheet or blanket on it before putting any containers on it. Just a thought😊

My question is why won't your parents buy more shelving? It is impossible to get stuff up off the floor if they have no place to to go. The shelves you implemented have stayed in place, and seem to have used the vertical space wisely. Could you offer to go buy the shelves if your Dad will pay for it?

There shouldn’t be anything next to the hot water tank. They could never get to it to work on it and if it leaked everything would get wet . 😢 nice of you to help them.

Do they have off site storage units? Why do you think they hoard? My mom is a level 4 hoarder and she also has 3 storage units she pays for every month. I'm trying to convince her to let me help her clear out at least 1 storage unit. Any advice on what to say to convince her? She claims she's ready to pair down but always has an excuse as to when it can happen.

They don't have off site storage. I think its many reasons why they hoard (not growing up with a lot of stuff, marketing, etc). It's great you want to help her, I've heard all the excuses from my dad. Instead of clearing out the whole storage unit, focus on one area or category within the unit OR somewhere else in the home and then bring up the storage unit

Unfortunately sometimes people don't want to change their bad habits. They are so used to clutter they don't see it anymore as a problem or something that they should address. The goal of having a functional, easy house to manage is not in their mind. I feel for you, I can just imagine the frustration with each cleaning reverting to a mess in no time. Such a waste to keep things you never use when others could use it or buying so much food that could be at least donated before it expires. They are lucky to have you as a daughter, don't give up, you never know, maybe their mentality will change in time for the better seeing how good it looks and how functional it can be.

I’m curious if your parents want their spaces decluttered? I wonder if they would buy shelving units or bins if you found some on sale? I love buying things on sale, it’s the rush of getting a deal. 😊 Or maybe they would buy a few bins at a time? Or maybe your dad could make some storage shelves? There are lots of easy garage storage ideas on KZbin. Another idea…you’re obviously good at what you do, so maybe you could find other people that want your help and film that. Good luck.

I believe that the person who owns the "stuff" that you are organising needs to be involved in the process if you want them to continue keeping it organised. If they don't put in the blood, sweat and tears then usually the area ends up back in the disordered state it was to begin with.

You can't make people want to do something. It's the most frustrating thing about being an essentialist with hoarder parents. We know how much better there lives could be if they decluttered but if people aren't really intersted in decluttering it's just not going to happen or it'll just go back to how it was even if they do let you you get rid of some stuff
