Today we are adding another shelf to my parents garage to organize products that have sat on the floor for years. After all the decluttering we are slowly implementing organization and today we take another step to getting stuff off the floor and creating new homes!

Getting all those old paint cans out is the biggest win!! The shelf is nice, and may help (I hope so!) but the paint is GONE and so that problem is gone now! :) You’re in a tough position having all of the internet telling you what your parents should and shouldn’t do, as if you can make them stop hoarding. You’re doing a great job accepting what is in your control and what isn’t. I would count it as a win anytime you can get actual trash and junk out of the house or garage. Every bit makes a difference.

I think focusing on organization is the way to go in this case. You can’t make people change if they don’t want to so hopefully them seeing all they have will naturally flow in to letting go and acquiring less! Keep up the good work!

If your parents don’t want to buy shelving, maybe that’s something you and your siblings could gift them when “occasions” come up that you buy them gifts, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, Anniversaries... or maybe your parents would give you a budget, $20/month or whatever, and you save it until you can get what you need for their garage. It always helps to have shelving units. Suggestion - turning the soda packs, small ends facing out, will allow more to fit on each shelf, they'll be easier to access and more visible. Need to find a way to secure the unit so it won't tip over, better to be safe. It looks much better! Hopefully your plan will work and help your dad see what he already has.

I tried that but it ends up hanging off the shelves since they're not that wide. If only the were a bit bigger that could work. Oh yes you're right, we don't want it to tip over. Thank you!

Small suggestion - i would put the small cases of beer in front of the large water bottles. They are hidden now behind the water jugs and your dad might not know they are there. Great video nice job

Thanks for sharing!! Good for you trying to help your parents declutter and organize! My mom is the same with over buying and stock piling on drinks, paper towels, toilet paper etc.. they are already set in their ways .. they won’t stop buying ..but if we can organize to show them what all they have hopefully it will help them to see they don’t need anymore (for now 😊). Shelving is a great help!!

Hey, Mariela. I was so happy to see a new garage video. Yay for the new shelf; you utilized it perfectly. I am sure dad and mom really like what you did. Friendly suggestion: use wooden pallets to get the rest of the drinks off the floor. Many businesses receive products on wooden pallets and most have to dispose of them. Many set the pallets out near the curb for people to just take. Perhaps you, family and friends can keep an eye out for pallets. Otherwise, good job-I enjoyed watching.

SUGGESTION - Just had a thought - why not switch contents of the shelves? The shelves by the back door look deeper and can hold more stock. Since they have more sodas, water, beer, laundry soap than the other things currently stored on them, it would give them more space for the things they stock pile. The black shelves would accommodate the packs of sodas turned, with small ends facing out, could stack more, retrieve easier and see inventory; right next to the back door when they are more accessible. The back up kitchen items would fit better on the newest shelf and since they aren't retrieved that often, the other side of the fridge would be fine. I would still suggest securing both sets of shelves, just to be safe.

I just can't help but hope that once your folks see how much extra stuff they have that they will stop accumulating so much. Stuff out dates, and it is such a waste. They could then focus on shelving and storage. You do such a good job for them...I'd never be so patient!

Great motivation as always Mariela. Tackling a small spot can sometimes really make a big difference. My parents are the same they stock up on drinks so much that some end up expiring before they consume them.

Yah! That’s wonderful. I’m so happy you did this for your parents. I really appreciate your kind support for your parents. I grew up with a similar situation. And it has taken me a long time to understand what help really means for someone who deals with the more is more outlook. You’re doing great! I hope he loves it. I curious to see if the laundry could go to the other shelf and then you could fit the last of the beers or maybe some of the water on the bottom shelf. I sure it’s been said but the better shelving units with heavy duty shelving and all metal are at Lowes, Home Depot and Ace Hardware plus other construction minded stores.. or even IKEA. Such a hard job but you’re a wonderful daughter ❤

I agree with everyone else, you're doing a great job! Hopefully you can find more shelfs on buy nothing groups etc. About the drinks: it might sound absurd since it's basically just sugar and additives, but sodas too can expire. And they will taste really bad! 😅 one time I had Fanta (from the bottle) at a dinner and when it tasted weird I was looking at the label to see if this was maybe some special edition and it turned out it was about a month before the bottle expired. Maybe it wasn't stored properly but yeah, it definitely was not drinkable 😅 oh and then I also once has expired coke (it was just a few months) and that was also disgusting 🙃

Almond milk is still good since they are unopened but it's a good idea to drink them up soon. And if in doubt smell and taste. You will know right away if it's no good.

Hey Mariela! Super excited to watch this video and then even more super excited when I found out it involved a shelf! Lol Now, I’m going make a suggestion that you may not have thought of. What if you put all the drinks on the first set of shelves that they were intended for at first? It’s bigger and stronger. And then you can put all the other stuff from that shelf onto to the new shelf. 😊

Tell your dad the shelf is a container and that he can’t put the drinks anywhere but on the shelf. When it’s full he has to wait to buy more until he has room.

Hi Mariela! You need to put this new shelf against a wall and if possible secure it to the wall. What about if it falls over with all that heavy stuff on it and lands on a child. That tiny shelf is not built to carry all this heavy liquid. I understand that you missread the measurements on this shelf, things like that happens. But! to be able to get most of this stuff of the floor one shelf is not enough. I think you should send this small one back and buy new all at once or one at the time and place deep sturdy shelfs all along the left all standing ouside looking in to the room. If your parents are keeping all this stuff big shelfs is the only ay to get it sorted If you´re lucky some of the stuff cluttering up their house could get a home on that shelf wall to. You know, loads of people have as much or more stuff in their garage as your parents but since it´s organized and up on shelfs it looks neater and as if it was less things. Another thing... I know you have siblings, I do to. I help our mother alot and I have had more than one "discussion" with my brothers and sister about them helping to, it´s tuff... sometimes my sister help, our brothers, not so much and it´s sooo frustrating... How about yours, don´t they feel that they should help to? Ps. the almond milk didn´t expire, it´s a best before date, it will be just fine along time after that.

Hello! Yes, the shelf needs to be secured somehow we just need to find wall space. Instead of sending it back I thought of another solution to use the black shelf instead for those items, but we shall see if that works. I can relate to having those discussions lol. My brother does help! If you see my other videos he helps a bunch. My sister helps me by keeping my nephew away as best she can so he's not in the way and can get hurt lol. I didn't need help today so it wasn't necessary for them to be here. Also, everyone's schedules is different and can be hard to coordinate but we do the best we can! Ah thanks I might take some almond milk home to drink and not waste :)

The expired almond milk is why they need to stop buying so much just because it’s on sale. They end up wasting. Also, in a garage that is hoarded they are always rodents and keeping stuff on the floor is disgusting. A large jug of laundry detergent will last a long time so there is no need to buy so many. They really need to start helping to stop the hoarding.
