The top cap bearings can be replaced. You need to collect a few shims from junk top caps. The bearing preload is set with a shim between the two bearings. I assemble the cap without the seal and squeeze the two bearings together in a vise to simulate compression. Thicker shim will be less preload. I set them loose by a few thousandths. I suspect the ones you built and failed were missing that little shim or it was to tight.

When I saw it, I immediately said bevel gear. Just changed out 2 BEVEL gears in my combine. No correction possible 😁

Same thing with the Kuhn-- they don't sell the bearings, the hub that the bearings mount in that bolts into the top of the bar, the shaft, gear, seals, or top hub... they cut a darn groove into the shaft at the factory, reducing its diameter from the roughly 1 inch shaft size down to less than a dime-- this is their "Protecta-Drive" units, and when the disk hits something, it twists the shaft off and tosses the entire turtle, top hub, and top end of the twisted off shaft out the back of the machine. Then you get to buy the ENTIRE hubs, gear, shaft, seal assembly for $250 bucks to get running again. They CLAIM that farmers cannot set the "preload" on the bearings to the proper spec; they "dial them in" at the factory, and supposedly that's why they don't sell the parts. A guy on the Hay Talk forum got sick of this with his Kuhn mower, as every time it hits something it's a $250 buck repair, and like you seals go and bearings get worn and start to wobble a bit and otherwise the hub is good, so why blow $250 bucks for a new ASSEMBLY when all you need is a $20 bearing... so he sourced the double-row ball bearing it uses and got some... it took some tinkering to get it right, but he made them work... Like you said, if you tighten them up too much, they warm up and lock up. You have to tighten them only *so much* so the preload is just right on the bearing (since both inner races are separate and go in from either side, like the ball-bearing type hubs on modern cars and trucks) and then you can get them to work right... In the old days, the company would give you a torque spec to rebuild things and put the proper preload on bearings... like setting up the pinion bearings in the rear axle of a car... but Kuhn figured out it's better for them to keep that information secret, say "you're not smart enough to fix this" and sell you a $250 pre-assembled part... Later! OL J R :)

they are gears. I worked at a family business repairing stuff at a dealership. I was factory authorized to do warranty work which is a big deal for somebody under the age of 18 at the time. I am sorting out the different manuals and finding out that they have nomenclature that is different from what I have been using all along. Goes back to gears and it just doesnt matter what it is called as long as the right parts are being used. You said it , you cant buy it separately anyway so the name just doesnt matter

Wes I don't want to call you out but I have replaced bearings before many times still to this day with no worries. My boss runs 2 new Holland self propelled mowers a hw340 and a hw 365 with a 2355 model discbine. I just wondered if you missed seeing the washer that sits between the 2 bearings so it can't be over tightened?
@daleolson35066 жыл бұрын
northernvicfarmermat his mite have been burnt up .you are correct the bearings need to be set with a spacer.
@daleolson35066 жыл бұрын
northernvicfarmermat also I have seen the bearing manufactures make the bearing cones wider to set the clearances .

Thats what i was thinking too, either a shim for the bearings or shim for correct gear lash.
@Sicktrickintuner6 жыл бұрын
Yep, it was all built one time to manufacture it, it was just assembled incorrectly id bet and probably something due to the way it was assembled.

I am enjoying this series. I always had JD disc mowers and found interesting the new Holland type and now understand what my neighbors were talking about their machines. But the basics are the same for deere and new holland. Thanks but i'm dying to know what you saw on that gearbox seal!

Bearings can be tricky. I've seen companies rebuild cat wheel ends with matching number Timken bearings. Meaning used the Timken number on the cat installed bearing and it didn't last a week. Tried it again followed procedure to the letter both times same results. Sometimes manufacturers spec things just a little different.

Don't want to cause an argument, but what's happened to the gear debris, has that been cleaned out. Bearing pre load by shims is because of poor tolerance in the machining. Its not something you see since cnc machining.

The "module" below the bevel gear needs to come off. The pinion bearings are going to be shot as they use the same oil.

That's really weird that you couldn't get that to work with the new bearings in that non serviceable part. What part of it seized up?
@mikegoodman4476 жыл бұрын
Probably didn't set the preload between the bearings. Takes a small shim. If he lost the shim they would be way to tight.
@Sicktrickintuner6 жыл бұрын
Im surprised they cant make a hub like a clutch in a vehicle with a set of springs to take up the jerking movement in those hubs. Easily be integrated into the top turtle id bet.

LOL we know what you dont see. The missing seal and probably a world of damage from lack of diligent and knowledgable repairs. Alas now it will take longer to get the mower back to the owner.

Could you show us a shock or shear type hub ? I assume maybe it's like a harmonic balancer on a engine ? Spline hub then rubber then hub that turtle is bolted to ?
@northernvicfarmermat6 жыл бұрын
The only difference is that a shock hub has less splines that grab so it shears off easy so you shouldn't do damage to the rest of it.

Are those big, spiral rollers rubber covered or steel?
@Ham682296 жыл бұрын
They're rubber covered, expensive to replace and those have to be timed as well. At least my old JD was.
@norman71796 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I thought they looked like rubber but I'm not familiar with farm equipment.
@lukestrawwalker6 жыл бұрын
They're a steel tube with the rubber bonded to the outside... VERY expensive... when they get old the rubber dries out and cracks and eventually starts turning loose and tearing out in chunks off the steel tube underneath... then you get to spend a few thousand bucks on new rollers... Later! OL J R :)
