I'm new to home assistant and was trying to add things last night with the local tuya but didn't realise they was charging for the iot thing now so for now this will help but I'll be making sure that all products going forward has the ability to go local like tasmoto etc

Yes, Tasmota and ESP Home are great ways to locally control ESP devices. I have tried local Tuya and would not use it again.

Can you help me understand something. I am having a hard time knowing when with HA do I need the bridge or hub. For example here, I understand you add Zigbee controllers directly (connected directly) to whatever is running HA (I'll run mine on bare metal). I also know that you can use WiFi and BLE devices directly within HA. But I've read not all the manufactures (naturally) implement the Zigbee stand the same way. Some use ZLL some use others. When using Tuya, or anything else, how do you know when you need to buy the Hub vs when you can just add it directly to HA? My goal is that I can avoid amassing all these different (and expensive hubs) - which will allow me to be more brand agnostic. Can you help me here - as no one really covers this everywhere I look. I do understand that for advanced features - for example certain lighting scenes or abilities (like with the Aqara T1M) are only available within the Aqara app itself and not within HA...but this does not bother me.

Hi Tyler, thank you for your question. It is a tricky one with zigbee. In general you can use a zigbee usb dongle like the sonoff one to build a zigbee network, I use ZHA as it is really easy to setup. There are however a few of benefits with the hubs. First some zigbee devices will connect better to their own hubs, the hubs offer additional functionality like an alarm system on their own and this hub offers to connect lots of devices and at a longer range. I hope this answers your question. In a nutshell I would start with a zigbee usb dongle and then buy a hub if you need the extra functionality.

Thanks for your video! But I have updated my HA to the latest beta version (2024.6.0b5) and the plug is not found. I have rebooted HA, changed the plug to setup mode...But HA can't find it. Have I skipped any important steps? Thanks again!

Hi Luis, that is really frustrating. I think it should work fine on the beta. I just loaded a new smart security light on the weekend and it connected, the problem was that is said that the device was unsupported. if you follow my steps it should connect.

So I did this and the plugs are still attached to the Tuya Smart Life app over the internet. I don't have complete autonomous control. It is still dependent on the internet. Any ideas how to gain autonomy?

Yes, Jeff unfortunately it is still not local control, but at least we don't have to mess around with developer accounts any more!

Sorry yes I see there is a skip. What you is press the plus button and select scan and then scan the qr code in home assistant

After testing it I can confirm that it works even after deleting the Tuya app. It will not work if I disconnect the internet connection. That given even my Shelly 1pms will not work and they are supposed to be local, very odd!

Yes, this is a cloud based integration. You can load up a local Tuya integration from HACS but it can be quite challenging!

I get this error "Login error (0): Login failed, please scan and try again!" not the qr code. I got the code from the tuya app...

That's odd, I have tried it again and I can't seem to replicate the error. Have you tried removing the device and reloading it?
