"It is what it is" Man I just can not agree at all for this, a 140% increase in price over 4 years is more than "It is what it is" it's highway robbery. This isn't even the case where the manufacturers can claim a $10 DCC board adds $100 to the price of a train.

For anyone wanting to know it's Chiaki Ueda ちあき うえだ // Chi-a-ki U-e-da. In Japanese, each syllable only has one vowel, and it's almost always at the end (n is the only consonant that can break that rule, and it's generally obvious like in nin-ten-do because "nte" and "ndo" aren't sounds humans can make). So if you see a word you know is japanese, a good rule is to stop each sound when you hit a vowel and you'll get it 90% of the time.

A Heljan-like conception saved only by nice dynamic qualities, sorry, but this is a no-go for me, whatever the price is, even at half the price. It does not sounds good for their forthcoming 9F and Black Five, whose models I have targeted for a buy. I will wait for your test of both before buying any of them. Hornby quality does down the drain whiles prices goes up, what a shame ! Two little things : I have seen on your layout a sky blue BP Janus, do you have a test video of it ? Second, one suggestion : make a test between comparable Hornby models and their continental counterparts inside the Hornby group : Rivarossi, Electrotren, and Jouef. I won't be surprised if the quality of their HO continental range is better than their English OO models (I have italian Rivarossi rolling stock, and it is fine in price and quality). I can give you some ideas of possible comparisons if you are interested. Thanks for the video anyway !

I think it's a lovely model and while the price is quite questionable I think with a bit of a discount it's worth it because of the performance it's so good like the Murphy Model's class 121 I believe and it looks quite good. The white and grey color combination is very interesting as well. Quite a shame about the lack of lights and the plastic handrails around the cab but overall I say 80£ would be good for one of these. The improved cab detail as well but oh Christ almighty disassembly is horrible 😅 Great review, Sam 👍

Why are you all surprised that Hornby is still making overpriced faulty flawed tat? While ever ya pay the prices for mediocrity, they’ll keep pumping it out. Tip: wait until the “box collectors” get bored of staring at them and pick em up half price on EBay or at swap meets. Dissecting a 50 quid loco to make it run better isn’t anywhere near as heartbreaking as carving up a £110 one.

I had got an 0-4-0 (GRAYHAM) at fenwick for 80 pounds not to long ago, and well for the running it’s only probably was the stopping at points before but for disassembling the only problem was that one of the tail lights came of but I easily glued it back on, also the hand rails easily clipped in place.

Hi Sam. Theory with regards the locomotive history not on the box. The smaller locos all seem to be similar in size and therefore specific boxes per loco class would increase costs. So for all the range that locos are of that similar size it's better to keep a single box size and design. Obviously for more special locomotives they may include the history in the back like the pecketts but guess in a year or so even they will end up in plain boxes. For the larger locos the boxes can be more tailored to them. Anyways that's just my theory on the boxes. Great review video as always.
@bentullett60682 жыл бұрын
As you said I bet they are going back to the older packaging they previously had about 7-8 years ago when they had the red and yellow box then a white insert with the outline of the locomotives, or maybe do what Bachmann do with their packaging.

I think the issue with the Hornby 0-6-0 is they tend to pivot around the centre wheels so if your points are not perfectly flat, which in my experience even with new ones is rare, it affects the pickups. With the 0-4-0 you have no such issues. An interesting observation on prices, I recently bought the Bachmann class 66 Evening star with sound from Rails for about £207. When you consider the sound decoder is a LokSound at retail of over £100. that makes the loco about £107. So which is the better value? Thanks Sam for a good review, I probably wouldn't have bought this loco but the mechanism was really interesting. Without looking I would have though it would have been the same as Percy, but obviously not. Probably is a 5 pole, Hornby 3 pole motors are generally aren't painted or anodised, 5 pole ones are. Obviously a different designer at Hornby. I bet you can't buy the handrails as spare parts.

I got the 0-6-0 Sentinel beacuse it had that Stanton livery, expecting it to be a good runner given it was a brand new loco and i was very disapointed. I had a problem with the coupling rods jamming, so the motor would run but the wheels were stuck. It's more probable that the 0-4-0 is at the price they wanted and knew sales would be poor if they sold the 0-6-0 for say £120/£150 so downgraded it to cost less to garuntee sales.

Since I started this train stuff just over 3 years ago I always thought that the railroad range would always make it possible for me to purchase new models. That plan seems to have gone out of the window. Is it really only just over 3 years ago that I purchased Adderley Hall for £49 and the warship Benbow for £35 as new models. I now have 17 locos , 7 of which were purchased new and all supplied by Hornby. Here we have a tiny diesel shunter that looks good and runs well but generally the price in relation to quality is poor. It seems as if Hornby have forgotten about people like me who want to get fun out of running some trains and still be able to stick to a budget. It is unlikely I will be able to spend money on new models with Bachmann and Dapol plus the newcomers already out of my price league. I'm looking into the second hand market these days but even here prices seem to be on the up. I have nothing against those modellers who can spend £250 without batting an eyelid but unless things change for the better in terms of price and in some cases quality people like me will disappear from the hobby. As always I enjoyed the video, sorry about the rant.

Whilst the complete excellence is something preferable i will always side on "at least have it be mechanically sound" side. That is good thing to focus development time on, yes it'd be better if it was you know using its peg holes and maybe some more sturdy materials were applied to building it. Overpriced, slightly disappointing detail-wise locomotive it seems. Oh well maybe hornby can continue with incremental improvements.

Also have the Stanton 0-6-0 Sentinel, agree out of the box it is poor compared to the 0-4-0's that run almost as nice as the 0-4-0 Peckett's. The 0-6-0 can be improved, remove the choke from the motor, fit DCC and a small keep alive and it runs really nicely, even crawls well. Without the keep alive it even stopped on electrofrog points, which doesn't make much sense for a 0-6-0.

What's a keep alive? Is it some sort of a capacitor? Never heard about that before

If you mean the blue saddle tank engine, the answer's yes. However, I'm a tad frightened of my new Gunpowder Van. I only hope it won't explode behind whichever steamy is chosen to handle it. AAH!😱💣💥
