One of the cooler points from the HMMWV design brief that often gets left out of videos like this, the reason they are so wide is so they can drive in the tracks left by tanks ahead of them, since those tracks would be confirmed clear of landmines. EVs are awesome now, and becoming better and better quickly. People who hate EVs just because it is an EV have some type of cognitive dissonance, and are stuck with what they were like back when Smart Phones were a thing. The batteries are getting lighter, holding more charge, charging faster, last longer, and cheaper. Honestly the only thing that will be holding them back is charging stations. Yet if you own a home? That h1 held up like a BEAST in the tug of war to the EV’s 11.5K of torque. That being said, with the transmission in low, first gear, plus transfer case, plus diffs and portal axles works out to about a 20.75:1 ratio in first gear low, which turns that 520 lb-ft of the engine to a whopping 10,782 lb-ft of torque to the wheel of that H1, which is nothing to scoff at
@failranch9542 Жыл бұрын
Yeah people forget that. Gearbox will make all the torque you want.
@blahorgaslisk7763 Жыл бұрын
@@failranch9542 It would really end up a battle of grip. The amount of torque you can put down is limited by the surface, the wheels, and the weight of the vehicle. And here being heavy really helps! So in this case it's likely the heavier vehicle would win. Well airing down the wheels would also help, and I'm pretty sure the H1 retained that function from it's military predecessor. @@matthewmondragon2074 Yes and if you want to play you will want the option to turn all of that off. You want to smoke the tires and do doughnuts! And it could possibly help when they tried the tug of war. But you are perfectly correct that you want the traction control turned on during normal use. In fact early electrical cars were known to "eat" tires as they had so much torque they tended to always break loose when starting. Tug-of-wars are always fun to see, but its important to remember that power is rarely the determining factor in them. Tesla did a demo where they showed the Cybertruck tugging away an F150 while the Ford just spun its tires, for instance. With no tire grip, of _course_ the Ford wouldn't move the Cybertruck. A LOT of people think that civilian HUMMERs were discontinued since their sales sucked but that’s not true. The sales were doing great but the government, as terms of the bailouts wanted GM to get rid of several brands and one had to be HUMMER due to its gas guzzler persona basically. At this time the US was doing a lot towards environmental causes, getting rid of gas guzzlers was something they took seriously, remember Cash for Clunkers? So, the H3 was never intended to save the brand, just increase sales and it did that. The Bailout Terms & Conditions and HUMMER sales figures can all be found online. I personally don’t think the H3 should ever have been made, had they gone the route of the HX, it would have become more of a premium model.

I used to work at the Humvee/H1 assembly plant. The test track has a hill on it that all you can see is sky as you drive up it. One of the tests is to drive halfway up the hill, come to a full stop, leave the truck in gear, and then let off the brake. The drivetrain of the trucks will hold them on this hill without any throttle or brake applied. Also, the Humvee is definitely not designed for full-size adults. There were certain variants I couldn't even get in. I can't imagine trying to get in one while wearing all your gear. Humvees are also remarkably short from front to rear. My car was three feet longer than the Humvees from bumper to bumper. Wheelbase was super long, though. This combo was obviously chosen to give great approach angles.

You guys SO should have found an OG H1 hummer… one that still had gulf war Saudi sand in the battery box, with a 6.2 diesel (no turbo) and a 3 speed TH400 trans… THAT would have been cool! Oh yeah, the large flat place the gunner stands on, that is the trans tunnel and part of the backbone of the body. Great episode… I didn’t realize Justin had service time under his belt… from one vet to another Justin… thank you.

Those H1s are so dope. When i was younger. Around maybe 2000-2001 . My cousin and me were able to drive around my uncle’s bosses H1 . The guy is the owner of general mills basically. It was so crazy being in. Trying to hand things to the driver. Was a stretch and a half. I wanna say he paid well over a 100 k which back then was crazy money. It had all the goodies front and back chrome winches. Definitely caught every eye.
@blahorgaslisk7763 Жыл бұрын
I have, according to a lot of people, questionable taste in design, but to me the H1 was the only "real" Hummer. The H2 and H3 were just glorified trucks. They lacked the brutal look and feel of the H1 which was what Hummer was all about. If I wanted a truck or general offroad vehicle there were a lot of options that weren't Hummer. The big mistake there was to think that their potential customers wanted a conventional truck. What made the customers pay for a Hummer was the military heritage. Without that they were not anywhere near as interesting. Certainly not interesting enough for people to pay a huge premium for the name.
@WashproBrad Жыл бұрын

The H1 was released in 92 and Renegade started airing in 91, so... Promotion by Hummer? Actually that car and for some weird reason the name Lorentzo Lamas is all I remember of the show. And I wanted one! A Humvee that is. Never understood what people saw in Lorentzo Lamas, though I guess he might have wet a few panties among the girls back then. It was the 90's. The age of boy bands, the rise of the female supermodels as well as Marcus Schenkberg and Fabio.

So something that is special about the humvees are the hubs. Each hub has a plentary gear set in it that is to help with the torque needed for the wild loads they expect the thing to pull.

@derpyduck5088 Жыл бұрын
It's a show pony, that's it. You can't improve them unless you want to buy a whole new engine. They're quick, but they're not fast. 0-60 is a beautiful number, but they get beat out by gassers time and time again in the 1/4 mile. EV battery life is what? 9 years? To a non-motorhead it's the future, to someone who actually knows cars its just fad that'll die out within a few years
@byeMaurice Жыл бұрын
@@derpyduck5088I don’t think its a fad, its too popular and too much money has been pumped into it, i think instead, Ev’s will improve as they currently are. The capabilities of the battery will grow as time passes, wether its a smartphone company that releases the technology or whatever. To a non motorhead, the 0-60 time is more important than the top speed. you barely ever go top speed on the road and especially not for long distances, whereas fast acceleration has more uses (overtaking merging etc). I’m no EV fan but in 10 years time i feel as though it would make sense to own a petrol car over and ev one for commuting and such.

I worked for a Canadian oilfield company 20 years ago that outfitted us with H1s for the job. It was a blunder. Too wide for the cutlines, no chance of tight turning in tight spaces, uncomfortable as F... We were all happy to get on the quad or snowmobile after the ride to the job site. Prior to this we ran around in modified Suburbans and they far out-preformed the H1s we were "blessed" with

Important to note that weight (grip) is almost always the determining factor for a tug of war, second is power
@tjkj-om9oi Жыл бұрын
How much HP, and even torque to a degree, is meaningless in a tug of war. The H1 would have either 3.08 or 2.83 diff gears and the portal hubs double that with another 2:1 reduction at the wheels.

what definith a hummer? if not for its absurdness, massivity, and thirsty nature, a hummer it would not be. all jokes aside, thats why the hummer ev is a "real hummer. the hummer stopped being a military vehicles since the h2, the whole purpose of it was based on its name, its size, and its absurdness and i think the hummer ev is more of a hummer than any hummer made before it, besides the original military hummer, and the maybe original street legal hummer. it fits every qualification for a hummer. its bigger than any hummer before it, its more powerful than any hummer before it, and its more insane and wild than any hummer made before it. The only thing its missing is drinking dino juice instead of electron soup not being based on a millitaty vehicle. besides that, this thing has every right to be called a hummer.

The H1 Alpha is 4-5 times faster than the OG HMMWV(6.2 NA version with the turbo 400 trans) as those in most cases would never reach 60mph and those that could would take almost a full 60 seconds if not more to reach it.
