Went to France in College for a WWII course, we went to the Beaches and followed them back to Paris. We stopped by a museum (this was in 2013?) and it was a Living History Museum, they had a ton of De-milled weapons and equipment to play around with, but they had working Half-Tracks, Jeeps, Deuce and a Half trucks, and others, and so they asked us if anyone could drive a Manual. I said yes I can, cause I learned how to drive on one, and they were like hey you want to drive a jeep? I was like you sure? and they responded similarly, "this was designed for dumb-ass 18-year olds like yourselves, you're not gonna damage it" lmao

Actually the Humvee was designed to be a transport vehicle with very light combat capabilities. The Gulf wars changed this as the military had to quickly adapt these trucks into combat vehicles, adding armor, cupolas, machine gun mounts, etc. My favorite thing about humvees is how good they make civilian cars feel after driving one of them.

EVs are awesome now, and becoming better and better quickly. People who hate EVs just because it is an EV have some type of cognitive dissonance, and are stuck with what they were like back when Smart Phones were a thing. The batteries are getting lighter, holding more charge, charging faster, last longer, and cheaper. Honestly the only thing that will be holding them back is charging stations. Yet if you own a home? Investing in some renewable, plus an electric car is just one of the best things you can do. Unless you're one of those people who apparently need to drive hundreds of miles without stopping all the time.

One of the cooler points from the HMMWV design brief that often gets left out of videos like this, the reason they are so wide is so they can drive in the tracks left by tanks ahead of them, since those tracks would be confirmed clear of landmines. If traction control was on for the tug of war it probably ruined the contest.

@@vaska916 You'd think they'd put it somewhere close to the WTF setting. If you use that you're probably interested in turing off traction control at least some times. @@livewire2534 I think you're right. The fact that it wouldn't turn the tires at all is obvious evidence. Pretty sure the EV would demolish the H1 given a proper surface and it not refusing to even spin its own tires. I used to work at the Humvee/H1 assembly plant. The test track has a hill on it that all you can see is sky as you drive up it. One of the tests is to drive halfway up the hill, come to a full stop, leave the truck in gear, and then let off the brake. The drivetrain of the trucks will hold them on this hill without any throttle or brake applied. Also, the Humvee is definitely not designed for full-size adults. There were certain variants I couldn't even get in. I can't imagine trying to get in one while wearing all your gear. Humvees are also remarkably short from front to rear. My car was three feet longer than the Humvees from bumper to bumper. Wheelbase was super long, though. This combo was obviously chosen to give great approach angles.

That h1 held up like a BEAST in the tug of war to the EV’s 11.5K of torque. That being said, with the transmission in low, first gear, plus transfer case, plus diffs and portal axles works out to about a 20.75:1 ratio in first gear low, which turns that 520 lb-ft of the engine to a whopping 10,782 lb-ft of torque to the wheel of that H1, which is nothing to scoff at

@@failranch9542 It would really end up a battle of grip. The amount of torque you can put down is limited by the surface, the wheels, and the weight of the vehicle. And here being heavy really helps! So in this case it's likely the heavier vehicle would win. Well airing down the wheels would also help, and I'm pretty sure the H1 retained that function from it's military predecessor. I have no idea about the electric version though.

@@matthewmondragon2074 Yes and if you want to play you will want the option to turn all of that off. You want to smoke the tires and do doughnuts! And it could possibly help when they tried the tug of war. But you are perfectly correct that you want the traction control turned on during normal use. In fact early electrical cars were known to "eat" tires as they had so much torque they tended to always break loose when starting. So traction control is more or less needed or they become very expensive to drive, especially modern versions with several hundred HP at the wheels.

Tug-of-wars are always fun to see, but its important to remember that power is rarely the determining factor in them. Tesla did a demo where they showed the Cybertruck tugging away an F150 while the Ford just spun its tires, for instance. With no tire grip, of _course_ the Ford wouldn't move the Cybertruck. Vehicle weight and tire grip matter more than power. Which is why the H1 was spinning its tires. Still fun to see, though!

The bulge in between the front seats is where the transmission is cause AM General (defense division of AMC) had to shove the engine and transmission back to slant the radiator for maximum frontal visibility. Never got to drive the HMMWV during my time in service but had a LOT of fun driving the M1078, M1087 and the old M35A3, the latter of which was my favorite!

You guys SO should have found an OG H1 hummer… one that still had gulf war Saudi sand in the battery box, with a 6.2 diesel (no turbo) and a 3 speed TH400 trans… THAT would have been cool! Oh yeah, the large flat place the gunner stands on, that is the trans tunnel and part of the backbone of the body. Great episode… I didn’t realize Justin had service time under his belt… from one vet to another Justin… thank you.

Man, that H1 Alpha brings back a core memory of mine. My aunt and uncle were pretty well off, and had an H1 Alpha. I remember visiting them shortly after turning 18, and we took a trip to a massive offroad park in the North East. They let me drive it, so much fun...until I went up a steep hill and let off the gas against the advice of my aunt before we crested the hill and we slid back until we hit a tree 🙃

@@theupscriber65 Most H1 owners do. The engine and transmission are out of a Chevy Silverado 2500. The differentials are based on the old AMC 20. The transfer case is related to one used by Jeep. The gauges and switches are commercial truck parts. The only specialized parts are the axles and portals but there is no shortage of Humvee parts. They're not much more complicated than a Silverado and they're only bought by enthusiasts at this point.

From a 20 year retired Army vet and Master Driver, the 989 Humvee was a terrible military vehicle. The fuel pumps broke all of the time. The tires frequently blew. Their was no AC in a 130 degree desert, so plenty of other units simply drove without doors. Dispite being so wide and heavy, they rolled over so much that the Army required military roll-over training. They topped out at 60 mph, so any terrorists that attacked could easily drive away in their Nissan and Toyota trucks. Despite a 25 gallon fuel tank, I struggled to drive 150 miles without refueling (that's 6 mpg). We needed the upgraded 1165 Humvee ASAP, and even it will be replaced.

HMMVW's are a blast to drive. Most folks would hate driving them for comfort, but if you get past that, they're just awesome offroad. The tunnel's raised so high not just for the gunner, but for ground clearance. Slapping down that parking brake was always satisfying.

I have, according to a lot of people, questionable taste in design, but to me the H1 was the only "real" Hummer. The H2 and H3 were just glorified trucks. They lacked the brutal look and feel of the H1 which was what Hummer was all about. If I wanted a truck or general offroad vehicle there were a lot of options that weren't Hummer. The big mistake there was to think that their potential customers wanted a conventional truck. What made the customers pay for a Hummer was the military heritage. Without that they were not anywhere near as interesting. Certainly not interesting enough for people to pay a huge premium for the name.
