@@kitchensbyrannes Thanks. I have been going over the instructions and built the frame. Question, are the screws used to secure to the floor not included? If not, what would you suggest to buy for an engineered hardwood floor on a plywood subfloor? Also, for a 90" 3 cabinet island is only 1 frame used and centered? I ask because my IKEA designer included 2.

One is enough. The Ikea planner/order system is a mess. Sometimes there's 2-3 anchor frames delivered for a kitchen with no island or peninsula 🤣 Use whatever screws you have with a flat head and long enough to secure a strong connection
@t0mj4y4 ай бұрын
I just installed one of these. I only have 2 units, a 60cm and a 40cm, but they sent me two 210cm kits which was completely overkill. I used less than half of one kit, so I'll take the other back to IKEA (if i can fit it in the car). On another note, my floor is ceramic tile on top of another layer of ceramic tile (then concrete screed) so drilling into that was a real headache. Tip for anyone in a similar situation: use a dedicated ceramic or porcelain drill bit (ideally with a diamond tip), use an SDS drill rather than a hand drill, don't use hammer action and use plenty of water to cool the surface as you go. Take your time too! I lost 2 days just installing these 2 cabinets, due to a melted bit which is now stuck in my floor forever. Thanks for all of these videos, Rannes. The advice you give is extremely useful.

Hello Rannes, I am just about to install my first IKEA kitchen, which includes a penninsula, and will be using the new anchoring frame. Your videos are super helpful, thanks for making these! One question I have is, that I would like to avoid drilling into my tile floor. So I was wondering about using a PU adhesive foam instead to glue the anchoring frame to the floor. Do you have any thoughts about this?
@kitchensbyrannes2 ай бұрын
Thanks. I am happy to hear that you like the videos. I wouldn't use glue at a clients house, since they would call me to complain if a bunch of teenagers runs into the peninsula causing it to move, but if it was my own, no problem. If it was an island I would suggest to build a frame on feet, but for a peninsula, which is connected to other cabinets, a strong and suitable glue should be enough. Let me know how it goes. A few pictures. Experience sharing is always good. kitchensbyrannes.com/share/

I just completed an island install using the new anchoring floor kit. My island is a double row total of 72” long with 3 cabinets on one side and 2 shallow cabinets on the back side, total 40” wide. I am an amateur. The kit worked fine with two exceptions: 1) the annoying metal twist feet used to level each of 4 corners of the support had poor (no) grip in the holes so they often fell out while trying to level it. Annoying but no deal breaker. It dealt well with different floor heights at different places. 2) the cross brace was not exactly flush with the side pieces. In fact without planing the cross brace, it sticks up 1/8” past the side boards. This is really, really annoying as most people would not notice and even then, it requires planing to make them match. Planing an 8” segment on each end for a beginner - nah. But also this ruins the ease of install. In the end, it worked fine. I prefer this to a bunch of individual pieces but it took a long time to level correctly. Also installing any feet or parts of feet on the back of each cabinet is a no go. No need and only interferes.

Thanks, Barbara. I did the same observations. The little feet falling off...doh 😣 And the parts not being flush....doh again 😔😔

@@kitchensbyrannes I'm installing it now. The feet didn't fall not even once in my case (my floor is pretty leveled, so I didn't have to "unscrew" the legs too far. And everything is flush in my case. Now, I forgot to buy those connectors to join the cabinets back to back. Will have 2 rows of deep (24in) cabinets on both sides, for a total of 36+36+21 :)))

@alexeiturkin3549, did you see the video I posted yesterday about the new island kit? Not that it would help much since you're double rowing 😁 Without the connector rail, put the black plastic pieces into the brackets and use a bolt+not+washer to clamp the two rows together. It requires that the cabinets sitting back to back are the same width, though.

Used on on the weekend, you have to think about what the width will be based on what's going around the base of the island, and you can't adjust the height, so figure that out with the adjustable feet, then first fix the brackets to the floor as the height isn't adjustable, and then you end up with so much wood left you could have done another island based on the old system. Did a single row of 30 inch base cabinets. I guess engineer's like to engineer things....even things that have already been solved.
@kitchensbyrannesАй бұрын
Yup, I used it too this week for a single-row island 90" long, so I didn't have to cut the length. I'm not doing as Ikea suggests. I use it in the same way as I used the old ones. The video is coming out soon.

@aitken19654 ай бұрын
My question is, how are we supposed to mount the large panels on the back of an island or a peninsula with the new mounting system? There's no provision made for a panel that goes right to the floor in any of the IKEA "literature". My best guess is that you have to cut new corner access holes at the bottoms of the cabinets and install a second set of mounting brackets to use with the new wooden channel strips. (I think we would all love to see a video of this new system being installed!)
@kitchensbyrannes4 ай бұрын
A video is coming at some point. As far as I i remember, you can run the back panel to the floor. The small clips must be mounted at a certain distance from the top. I've remembered seeing that in the instructions.

I have one sitting in my garage, but I won't be using it for another few months as the house it is going in is under construction. I wasn't going to use the old style, but this looks actually useful. I was going to build a plinth that was basically exactly this, but out of plywood. Level that, attach it to the floor, then put the cabinets on top of it. My island is not fully rectangular, it's two 36" full depth cabinets on one side, a 15" facing the end that is custom cut to 18" deep, with a waterfall edge on the other end. Seating for two in-between. Using one of the 42x74 laminate island tops. I will be very curious to see your video, I can always return it and go back to my original plan if it looks less useful than I think it will be. I am having a LOT of fun with this kitchen - I just built a trash cabinet with the electric opener and a custom insert to hold the trash and recycling bins, and a custom-topped Utrusta pullout work surface above them. It has a removable plug so you can sweep cuttings straight down into the waste bin. Also working on a 6" lower cabinet with a slideout holder for a stepladder, and another custom 18" pullout work surface in the tall pantry cabinet. Good times!
@kitchensbyrannes4 ай бұрын
I tried both methods. Level and the frame before or after the cabinets goes in. I installed it on plywood subfloor both times so I could reach in and secure the brackets to the floor with cabinets in place. With tiles, not possible. When I leveled the frame before the cabinets went on top, the frame was skewed, which made it difficult.
@NOELTM4 ай бұрын
I hate it!! I have (last two weeks) installed it for a peninsula. Why don't I like it? 1. IKEA assumes you have a flat floor. Mine varied by over 1.5cm in various places - over the length of the peninsula. I found it impossible to get the fame under the cabinets and raise it using the instructions, ie via the screw feet at each end. To solve I shimmed the frame in various spots using plastic window/door frame spacers until the frame touched the underside of the all the cabinets. Then I added one screw to each floor bracket at each end of the frame. Then I secured each cabinet onto the frame using four screws into the cabinet base. I did not put the screws through the base sides of the cabinet vertical panels - as per the instructions - as I can see no point in doing this. Then I went back and put the remaining screws in the floor brackets including the middle brackets. So for me the levelling of the frame is not optimal. 2. IKEA assume you place the frame on the floor, get it level then add your cabinets on top. If your space is limited moving a long frame around isn't easy. If like me you screwed the cabinets together ( all nice and square) before putting the frame under the cabinets you need a lot of free space to slide the frame under. Again in a small kitchen this may not be feasible and you might have to undo the cabinets and remove them to get the frame in place. 3. There are hundreds of holes in the frame just so you can cut it and screw the end pieces on using the most appropriate/ nearest hole. This can mean it's tricky placing the floor brackets in a good place so that the screw holes for the brackets don't align with the bigger pre drilled holes - because then the screws don't fit. 4. The holes in the frame provide a weakness when screwing down the cabinet. You can feel the screws falling through these holes if you are unlucky enough to pick a spot where these holes are when you screw the cabinet down. 5. The previous system seemed much easier/flexible as you could place the floor blocks where best suited to the situation and were easy to align up/down The "only" benefit I can see for this new concept is you don't need a right angle screwdriver attachment as the frame is placed along the cabinet length. 6. For my installation the peninsula is attached to a corner cabinet ( the cabinet with the carousel/ Lazy Susan, not the bi-fold doors - see I do listen to you! 🙂). Reaching under the corner cabinet to screw the frame to the floor brackets is a stretch, if like me , you placed the frame in the middle of the base of the cabinet - if I had made the frame longer ie further into the cabinet i don't think i could reach it. IKEA want me to put the frame down before the cabinets but for my build this wasn't feasible due to the need to build/hang/place the cabinets and align then to avoid various obstacles. Next up is adding the cover panel to the back of the cabinets. IKEA changed this too. From something simple, two horizontal MDF bars fitted via brackets to each cabinet, to one flimsy timber bar at the top and metal right angle brackets that each have to be attached to the panel before jamming the lip of the bracket into the slot for the backboard. This isn't good for me at all. I ended up buying my own pieces of moisture resistant MDF and cut them to form bars that fit into the cabinet back panel and with my own brackets I fitted the back cover panel via the previous method. In other words buy/make the components that IKEA previously supplied as the new method is just terrible IMHO. To me IKEA changed something that was o.k. to something that is worse. But maybe I did it wrong/badly and there are better ways. I have certainly learned a lot from you Lars, so I'm curious as to your experience.
@kitchensbyrannes4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts 🤔 I'll add my experience to the video I'll be making but my conclusion will line up with yours. A few comments. First, I did a double-row island. That didn't go so well. The floor anchoring was somewhat fine but the part where you connect the two rows at the top. It was not great at all as the two rows had cabinets of different widths, so nothing was sturdy. Very difficult to achieve a decent result. The single row I did last week was a lot better. I had plenty of room to slide in the frame, and by using a 90-degree attachment to my power drill, it went better than expected. I haven't put on the panels yet, so the small clips for that are still in the bag. The client needs to have flooring done before I get to do that.

@@kitchensbyrannes For my situation I struggle to see how this new design is a step forward, for either IKEA or the user. For one thing there is more timber being used/wasted ( what do you do with the excess wood you cut off if the row is shorter than the frame? , either trash or burn it?), the previous method had no waste wood. I only had a single row. For a double row I can see from the instructions the frame is shared across both rows. For me I would think it would be better to have two separate frames one for each row. In the UK a frame is £40 - so that's an expensive addition. The outcome is certainly less satisfactory than the previous design.

I agree....with everything. Og well, sometimes progression is a step back 🤔
@Kevin_Rhodes4 ай бұрын
I would not have done it that way. Install the base fixture FIRST, get it leveled up properly and attached to the floor, then put the cabinets on top. They can't be anything but level at that point. THEN screw them together and to the fixture. A double-row island is going to need two of these - no way would I try to just run it down the middle. This thing is going to be FAR easier to level than a bunch of screwed-together cabinets are. The old fixture does NOTHING but hold the island to the floor, it is no help in leveling them. I can't see this as anything but a huge improvement. Though entirely possible that making your own base for the island and installing it the same way is better than either of IKEA's methods, but they can't just deliver that. IKEA's rail system is brilliant, but that doesn't work for an island. Though I suppose on a double row island maybe using this for the first row and a suspension rail for the second row attached to the first row might actually be a not bad way to go. Then you only have to level the second row in ONE plane, not two. I don't like either method for attaching panels. IMHO the right way to do it is to replace the flimsy cabinet back that IKEA provides with rabbeted 1/2" plywood, and attach the panels to that. Takes 5 minutes to make a plywood back panel with a table saw and a dado blade or in my case a track saw and a router. But again, IKEA can't provide that. I think your method is pretty good too - if I didn't have a well-equipped shop that is probably how I would do it too. I agree, I don't like the idea of those clips, seems inevitable that the panels would end up a bit floppy.

I didn’t know this existed. I checked the manual. It wouldn’t bring $69 worth of value to me so I won’t use it. I think it’s meant for clients with little to no experience and try to guide them through the process of installing an island. As opposed to having them figure out how to build a 2x4 base. Planning, pick-up straight lumber, measure, cut, level, etc… lots of little skills that aren’t hard nor time consuming but that a beginner doesn’t have. $69 for a pro, or a semi experienced DIYer isn’t worth it.
