This type of "games on the side of screen" sooo reminds me of the tiktoks where we have a story on one screen and Subway Surfers on the bottom screen

I can already see it being merged with visual novels, where the MC has to maintain a social life while being addicted to his videogame for definitely-not-world-ending reasons (Arcanoid maybe). Just make dialogs go on at a standard speed non-stop, add quick timers for choices, and make it so that failing at the small videogame underneath slowly destroys the MC's happy normal life (or rewards him with tools to avoid the impending doom.)

I knew it as 'Stress' because that is what someone had named the game file we all shared between us. Messed around with it quite a bit as well.

I just realized what these games make me think of: Those little things that Twitch streamers will have on the bottoms of their screens that usually are just little critters milling about, but sometimes will even have special functions like a battle or party mode.

I saw "My Little Life" the other day and I instantly thought "oh hey, this is just like Rusty's Retirement" glad to see someone else realize there's trend potential here. I wonder if you can stack them all at once lol..

I love platformers, so I could see an auto-runner with optional branching paths or earned powerups. Think Super Mario Run at the bottom of your screen, where the hero vaults over small enemies and steps over single-tile gaps, but you can interact to make him jump higher to get coins or whatever, or to go to an upper path where you have to actually play it for a while, or he'll fall back down to the bottom level.

Nanomon Dev here! Thanks for shouting out Nanomon Virtual Pet! Im so happy Rusty's Retirement blew up, its given me so mich more confidence that people actually want these kinds if games! I hope its not a flash in the pan like Vampire Survivors though, since i feel like theres so much more potential in this genre

this genre, if you can call it that, has way more diversity potential than survivors-likes, which are all about combat and upgrades exclusively. Being low input, chill and having certain aspect ration is genre agnostic features really, which is a strong side. Just for example. a few ideas that I'd be glad to see somewhere (bottom or side) on my desktop: - a fishtank - chill party based dungeon crawler (autobattler Darkest Dungeon) with character and meta progression, loot and stuff - incremental tower defense - Cloud Gardens type of game, where you just pland seeds and they grow over time on the environment - space gas or repair station sim / space cafe sim - literally a good looking Backpack Hero clone with less input - good grand scale kingdom builder, where you make high level decisions once in a while and watch them get fulfulled from birds eye view - post-apoc train with survivors moving around the world, gathering supplies/resources from cities and stations, where you stop, maybe some kind of customization and upgrade system, maybe some simple automated combat Survivors-likes would never have such a big spread of potential genre mixes. Although I'd still be cautious about the surge of half-assed screen bottom dwellers that will get called games. When VS was released everyone thought it was the best thing ever, and after first clones came out most people realized that they gonna get blasted with that garbage from all sides for a long time. Hopefully will not be the case here and some quality standarts will be upheld. I think if you manage to catch certain genre inclined audience first, you can achieve relative success. Big hopes for tavern / cafe / restaurant sims and all sorts of train rusty-likes.

There's a free game that is kind of like this - but more like one of those old "Desktop Assistants" meets DDLC. It's called Outcore: Desktop Adventure, and it's pretty fun.

I have a good few hours in Rusty's Retirement by now, and I really like it. So if this will be used as a base for more games in the future, I wouldn't complain at all. ^.^ Make sure to keep us updated on these, please. :D Also, on a sidenote, I hope they'll call the new subgenre Rusty-likes, Retirement Games, or Retire-likes, as I always felt that such naming conventions were a nice way to honour the original, or the game that made the genre popular. 😊

have you seen how well The Gnorp Apologue is doing, it really blew up . such a strange game too.. most ppl i show it too would not play it they say, but it has a huge fan base somehow , i find this interesting

To be fair, whenever I'm in a competitive PvP queue marathon I always feel the need to have a second game to play during matchmaking and character selection. This kind of thing could scratch that itch that a GBA emulator is solving for now. I can already see a mad project of managing multiple games, juggling activities all around the desktop, Wario World style. With complete disregard from the initial gameplay expectative, and that could be nice. Like a cozy farming simulator that's actually quite intense and nerve wrecking.

I was expecting a news about Zuckerberg turning to video game and pretending to be indie. I guess because some japanese publisher patented mini games while loading (and loading times are short now), now we have mini-games on the desktop instead. I expect those games have a fast hiding option for when your boss comes checking on your work. 😁

Cool to see the trends in indie games and as usual it's best to be riding right at the front on the crest of such waves. I've always thought as soon as Dwarf Fortress releases "Dwarf Fortress: Terrarium Mode" all other games will cease to exist! Apart from that kind of application, multitasking is tricky: Do one thing and focus on it and do it well or do mulitple things and all of them badly... so the saying goes! ;-) That said you're right about players enjoying some passive harvesting of progress or success and that's exactly where these games slot in though the simple ones are not for me personally, as said I'd like to see idle-games go to the next level of automation and communication and virtual world running in the background 24/7 as per DF. Thanks for the video! Always enjoy these tangents into the depths of indie games.

The problem with vampire survivors clones is that they try to sell themselves as more grand than what they are, and then you see the gameplay and realize it's just another clone. Like the developers are actively trying to tweak their game descriptions to sound like bigger games instead of just being upfront about it. I wouldn't mind these kinds of games getting clones providing they don't try to sell themselves as the next Stardew Valley.

The thing is 2d plataformers are mario clones and rpgs are ff clones fpa are wolfeistein and doom and cs clones. There are very few games that are truly original and they tend to generate the so called clones. I dont like the word

Indie game market scenario now is just: trend creator or trend follower... ...and the simpler to create the better! Preferably with portability for cell phones, indie games instead of exploring creativity are niched and taking a bite out of some market share, and it's the fault of the consumerism of simplistic media like this and leaving aside good games properly very well developed, it's sad, but soon another ms paint will be some indie game possible.
