New Inn to Cashel, Tipperary - July 1999

My paternal Irish antecedents in Tipperary were the families Walsh, Fitzgerald, Barrett and Carew. My great-grandparents were married at New Inn in January 1885 and my grandfather was born there in May 1886. The family subsequently moved to The Green, Cashel. This shows my journey along the N8 from New Inn to Cashel, along Cahir Road, into Main Street and Bank Place to Lady's Well Street in July 1999. RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta can be heard on the car radio.

I remember it well, I was living out to Dundrum, Carhue. And had horses & wagons down on the bog by Littleton, Danny Dwyer a Gas man, capamuir, Thanks I love watching this when I get home sick. Thanks.

That video is a bit of a historical curiosity now - the approach to Cashel has changed completely and a new motorway runs through the county, meaning the old road and towns and villages are a lot quieter now. Thanks for uploading!

Ah, excellent. Can't wait to see it. The M8 videos are a little dull; you don't get to see much of the countryside. You should check out the M8 motorway page on wikipedia for some nice pictures.

If you were going that far into town from New Inn today, your quickest route would be to go off the M8 motorway at Exit 8 where the Topaz motorway service is and then, enter the town from the northbound lane on the Clonmel Road.

i don[t sluppose many, if an y, in cashel town know that the word cashel means CASTLE in irish. some prefer to use the other irish lingo name of Cashlawn. But the locals call it Cash. WHY? can they not speak english properly? how can we revive irish if the local unwashed cannot speak proper english?
