I know a lot of people think Wilds' IG sucks but it's actually my favorite weapon out of the entire demo! Hopefully I can showcase how you can make this weapon deal a TON of damage, while maintaining all the buffs , and of course, making it fun

Thanks for sharing. IG and Hammer are the two weapons that I really want to get started with wilds. The damage output the IG can put out seems to be quite high within a short amount of time.

@RicochetForce yea it can be quick to get all buffs back, but if the monsters fast or small it takes forever to get buffs back, which you need to do any damage, on top of your super buffs period only being 30 seconds now in wilds and the fact you cannot reset that bonus until it goes away, on top of losing earplugs, on top of losing aerial, on top of not being able to readjust attacks, it doesn't feel fun anymore. I know it's beta and the kinsect sucks but rise beta didn't feel this bad with bad kinsect, world didnt feel this bad. When every other weapon got new stuff on top of what they got from world, whatever made insect glaive good in rise they took out in wilds. The "massive damage" dark talks about is normal damage for everything else.

Once the buffs are running low you can simply use the super to reset them early. I did never feel bad with the duration of the tripple buff. The reason this beta felt bad with the kinsect was the bug that the kinsect flew above the reticle or even 90° up

Honestly staying in the air to attack was always a fun thing but the point of the bounce for me was to position for wyvern dive. In world the flexibility of that move is extremely powerful as no other weapon can cover as much ground and deal as much burst damage so quickly. That attack being gone entirely is a massive blow to the weapon. Drill kinsect playstyle was basically killed by that. Having it on a long charge is not the same attack as what we had previously. Even needing wirebugs was better than this incredibly long chargeup. Grounded it really hasn't gotten better. Replacing the starting top face input with this slow, laggy step attack has made the snappiness of combat take a back seat. You can still do the same with the standing right face attack but that doesn't always hit where you want. Having both a double thrust and the double horizontal swing made the weapon incredibly flexible and precise. The time to roll out of attacks is also increased on a lot of attacks. In addition having charged attacks feature so prominently on a weapon that has historically had none is a further blow to it's snappiness. The ways you need to position your hand and needing to use the same finger to hold down the kinsect drill charge and aim with is a frankly asinine decision. You're not forgetting to use it you're actively choosing not to because it's unwieldy and impractical. Same as it was with 4U when that move was introduced. For me, glaive embodied a few traits that made it stand out and my favorite weapon in every game it's in. Quick snappy combos with lower damage but quick recovery. Flexible moveset that allows repositioning mid combo. Flexible aerial movement that allowed you to keep up with fast monsters and deal exceptional burst damage. Best weapon for mounting unmatched. The only one of those things that has really stuck around uncompromised is the mounting. The ground moveset has new attacks that slow down combos and remove options, the recovery times are longer and riskier to do, aerial movement is now extremely limited and no longer even has the option for good damage in the air at all like with wyvern dive, and the introduction of charged inputs in almost every aspect of using it has made it awkward and uncomfortable to use. It's by no means useless or a terrible weapon. But every aspect of what glaive has been and how it has evolved over the years has been either thrown out entirely or made to be worse. The weapon is fine, it is better than it feels. But it does feel terrible.

This needs to be highlighted so people understand about the weapon Insect glaive was never about getting big damage. Every weapon has its own unique play style. For insect glaive that was mobility. The main advantage it has over every other weapon in the game is it's ability to be highly mobile. While also dealing consistent damage Insect glaive isn't suppose to be a huge damage dealer. That's the trade off for amazing movement

Even with triple buff, your moves are way slower than before. Also there's no actual flow anymore. No dance with the monsters. You always backhop, sidestep, around with no actual rotation other than doing the rising spiral into regaining extract and back into rising spiral. Not because optimal DPS. We IG mains don't care about meta dps, generally. It's just because we did not get anything cool to play with, other than the swirly combo and shooting the Bug at a wound. Even worse, we got the past 7 years of (fun) Insect Glaive playstyle and evolution almost completely reversed. World and Rise established a playstyle that revolved around aerial to charge up a finisher in order to continue with a nice flowing ground combo. Most people who play IG have started with World. They fell in love and have a certain idea of what this weapons identity is. Half of it was aerial, half of it was ground combo and Kinsect management. I'm an old veteran, played long before IG was even a thing, and i know that IG started without extendet aerial, but every weapon in MH has a clear path of evolution. Look at Gunlance. Better than ever. Bow,LS,CB? Better than ever. Lance? A thing of beauty. Every other weapon? Yeah, people like them. No big complaints. And then there is IG. My beloved main weapon for over 10 years and i will main it again in Wilds, hoping for hidden stuff in high rank. It looks cool and hits like a truck, is NOT a bad weapon and has some nice upsides. But still it is not the same weapon anymore. It's not the same source of fun anymore. You don't remove explosions from GL, melodies from HH, shield moves from SnS. Because it would be wrong and many people would hate it. That's what we see with IG now. Aerial is gone, yeah who would really care if we get some clear upgrades on the ground. But also nice flowing ground combat is gone. This is bad, no matter how cool rising spiral and gimmicky mechanics are.

Yeah man I love this weapon and played for 20or so years and all of a sudden it’s messed. It used to be fun to fly around it looked cool even if it didn’t do crazy damage in the air. I love it still but I’m pretty sad. I’m hoping they atleast add one extra jump.

Agreed. To be frank world also had so many issues with IG: Aerial attacks were trash so it was ground glaive. I found myself always going back to the ol' reliable blast IG (literally everything is weak to blast). But at least world GAVE you the option of aerial. I thought IG would have been great after seeing what they did with it in rise but i am sorely disappointed. The only word that comes to mind when I see people saying IG is fun is 'Cope'. Just count how many times darkhero said: "but thats okay its fine" during the rey dau fight. Enforced change does not equate to fun.

Rising spiral should be an optional way to deal damage, not the most effective or optimal. Getting extracts and then spending it constantly gets boring really fast. For aerial, they could at least give one bounce at least, not kill the aerial combat outright.

Tbh while it is fun, it was overpowered. You could just sit in the air and avoid majority of attacks in the game while dealing damage slowly in a really safe manner. Also is might not be fully out of the picture as it is entirely possible it returns in the form of a skill or set bonus but we won’t know until the game if they will do that.

@@binhvan4893 I know what I’m about to say is purely anecdotal, but I’ve fought almost every monster with IG in world using primarily aerial attacks and I didn’t have any trouble with any monster (minus Fatalis as I’m not the greatest at his fight in general). This was most prevalent to me when to doing AT Velkhana with IG as I barely had to heal and didn’t cart because of how little of her attacks landed as I was in the air for majority of the hunt in contrast to when using other weapons that I’m way more skilled with, I was having a harder time as I actually had to deal with the monster’s moveset and not only a small portion of it.

@@Gwa-Senpai The wonky hitbox mostly comes from monsters with large size and often use their whole body to tackle you. You're not gonna have that much of a problem with it if the monster's moveset consists of mostly sweeps and stabs like Velkhana. And even for Velkhana, you can still get hit while airborne if it is doing its charge.

honestly i feel like an easy fix to make players happy would be to just give it one bounce instead of four, this way it is still limited but gives you enough time to charge your attack and position yourself while in the air, at the moment for me at least the only reason for going in the air is mounting and repositioning for wounds on the backs of monsters. Also it just isnt as satisfying using the triangle attack mid air and not bouncing off of the monster.

I'm not playing with a controller but I rebound vault/kinsect aiming from R to a side mouse button that was previously bound to "simultaneous action" and the weapon is as smooth as it was in World. Gotta hold a side mouse button while attacking if I want focus attacks but that's hardly difficult. Controller might need another look though it's a common complaint I suppose.

@@GuybrushTThreepwoodthere’s more than a dozen pages of options…. if you’re not on xbox (cuz they don’t have the ability to) i’d try turning on the motion aiming if you’re a controller user, and then turn OFF aim assist. you can aim exactly where you want with a quick twitch of the wrist when you get the settings right. (edit: if on pc, you need to use a controller with gyroscope in it. any switch controller will work, or Sony controller) but, always, ALWAYS go through the options menu when starting a game for the first time. one setting could make the difference between loving and hating a game.

Little hint is u can start charging your move in middle any attack. Example of you having trouble doing it in air I suggest as u in middle of animations to vault up start holding circle. Should have charge by time u max height.

I think having the aerial combos as a more evasive and safer but weaker choice was kinda cool. If capcom is going to make aerial worse for evasion then It must be buffed damage wise a fair bit it compensation. I will miss being able to fly but hopefully there is some light

People said that SJAS (aerial helicopter) was buffed damage wise, like Rise. It had MVs closer to World in the demo afaik. On top of that they *also* reduced the MVs for ground combos. They *really* want to force us into RSS and its lead-in move.

23:39.... And there we have the problem. I don't want to 'forget' everything I built up in the previous games. I don't want to have to relearn the weapon I have put over 1,000 hours into because I loved how it played in the previous two titles. Every other weapon had either small or substantial changes that still kept them feeling like their old counterparts from the previous titles. Only IG got shot in the back of the knee and told to walk it off. It's a really crappy feeling when you have your buddy talking up how great his GL feels because everything he knew still applied easily in the demo and he only had great additions added in Wilds'. I, on the other hand, was struggling to even hunt the Dogama because I didn't know how to begin to even approach this Frankenstein's monster of a weapon. I have solo killed Fatalis. This oversized dog-lion-bear shouldn't have been an issue. But it was as I was completely thrown overboard with how crappily designed the IG was in the demo. Hopefully it changes on release.

It's not about the power, it's about the identity and fun factor. I'm sorry, but for me, the aerial combos and mobility ARE the defining factors of the Insect Glaive, not the Kinsect or the fact that it's the only true polearm in the game, and I'm saying this as someone who did actively engage with the grounded moveset in World. I mean, both Long Sword, Hammer, and SnS technically have aerial attacks and near all of them are cooler than the ones IG provides. What separated them was the fact that IG could stay in the air longer, and regardless of optimization, it was the most fun way to play the weapon. If they wanted us to spend a bit more time on the ground, then they could have increased the stamina costs of aerial attacks. OR they could have TRUSTED that they'd provided the incentives to engage with the grounded moves and TRUSTED the players to mix it up. Taking away the bouncing off the monsters entirely is such an incredibly inelegant solution to a perceived problem.

That was the Glaives identity from World and rise. 4U and Generations is arguably more what wilds in in line with. As much as I enjoyed Helicopter it's lack isn't my main issue. Its the fact Wilds Glaive is trying to bring back using the claw to control it properly and the fact the Kinsect dust is under utilized imo. Such a non factor most players will likely never use the dust. It be nice to have the rebound back in some form. Imo it's just not the Glaive biggest issue currently.

I just wish the weapon got better treatment from world to wilds like most the others did. It may be objectively better. The fun factor for me though is dust in the wind.

It’s like instead of using a soccer ball to play football, you just throw it around and kick it around randomly like an autist. I can guarantee that most players didn’t touch the weapon because they only enjoyed the aerial for a little and then got bored.

The same reason you presented as a negative was a huge selling point for myself and many others.

Tbh yeah it’s fun to play until you understand that the optimal way to play the weapon is to spam the combo spin by holding down ⭕️ (and sending the ultimate tornado when there’s time). Hold ⭕️ which means you can’t move the camera with the right joystick, on a gun that is constantly playing in focus mode and asking you to aim. This is the dumbest button mapping I’ve ever seen, and it’s the same for the charged kinsect, you have to hold triangle and you can’t move the camera anymore to aim. And I don’t even mention that you also have to hold L2 (and R2 for the kinsect) because all combos of the weapon integrate the focus. All this unless playing claw (or unless you have a third hand or a 200$ custom controller), but it’s far too uncomfortable, I’ll just play another weapon whose controls are not randomly placed on the controller.

Your thumbs should always be on the sticks, you use your index fingers to push buttons, and your middle finger to press the triggers. The controls are designed with this in mind. You will find it waaaay more comfortable playing many other games once you get used to it, Like Elden Ring.

Exactly! I get the sense that those saying that Wilds' IG feels "technical" let alone moreso than the before likely haven't figured out the basically single gameplay loop available or didn't play for long enough to adjust fully to the new control scheme. Legitimately the most complex thing about Wilds IG is the amount of buttons a player needs to press at once. Everything else is significantly simpler and single-minded than previous iterations.

what safety are you talking about? Started from Iceborne you always get hit no matter how high you are. There is NO invulnerability frames like in the bow dodge move. You need to position yourself properly and THEN you can evade. And you need to get back somehow so its very tricky. Was and still is. If they remove part of the playstyle for the weapon - it sucks. And you just sugarcoat it.

Aerial safety is one of those topics where every non-IG main thinks it's OP because they don't play it enough. They THINK you're safe, when really, almost anything and everything will knock you. Hitboxes on most bigger monsters don't actually match, tail swipes and hip checks almost always have larger hit boxes than the model itself, and you'll constantly get checked even if you're visually outside the range of the attack. Without rocksteady mantle, you need to learn every monster's hitbox and attack patterns, and even then you'll get knocked more often than not. You'll probably have an easier time learning parries/invuln timings with LS than learning to stay safe in the air with IG.

@@RicochetForce Most larger monsters have at least one type of attack that is just BS if you're aerial. Most of them body check you just by moving, so rocksteady is simply a must. Most of them roar you out of the sky so you need earplugs. And once you wasted your skill pool on just QoL to manage all the counters, stamina management ,and buff duration, then you have to deal with silly hitboxes. Off the top of my head, Glavenus overhead slashes hitbox is almost triple the size of the tail itself in both length and width. The ground swipe hitbox extends well above the tail as well. I think most people talking about aerial OP either only used IG against small bosses, bosses that are super passive, or they look at someone that mastered a fight and knows exactly when they are allowed to go aerial.

4:20 worth noting that this wasn’t from getting red+white, it was from getting triple buff. Now, you no longer unlock a moveset from just having red buff. You need red+white+orange to get new moves. So there’s basically no reason to not have triple buff now.

My simple answer is that I just don't really give a shit. What we're seeing in wilds is just not insect glaive anymore. I don't caree about a gameplay loop of gathering kinsects, doing a janky move and then repeating the process. Glaive's standard weapon attacks got nerfed, you now need all 3 extracts to have a functioning moveset and your aerial mobility (I don't care about fighting in the air, I care about the mobility) is gutted. This is extract dumper, not insect glaive.

Yea the focusing on the bug and everything revolving around that made this weapon lame. Also it looks like to much work and a waist of time running around getting buffs to try and just be able to combo effectively. Seems a bit too much work for me. I’d imagine after a while it just gets exhausting.

just because the weapon is strong doesn't make it fun. the controls are clunky, and the buttons make me strain my hands. one of the fun things about IG is being able to vault and tripple bounce around the monster, also being a good way to build up status effects. wyvern wive is super underwhelming, not damage wise, just visuals. the focus attack is lame as fuck. the kinsect fighting with you doesn't look cool, and most of the time, i dont even notice that it's happening. IG literally has no cool interactions like the other weapons. people dont seem to get the point why IG mains are mad and act like they know what IG mains want.

@@aliasonarcotics I was also playing it wrong. Lmao, I wasn't doing rising slash/stationary Y (triangle). Instead I was moving the left stick forward which resulted in that awkward slash. However, descending thrust seems better here albeit stupid to pull off. I think you need to vault + triangle before you can pull it off.

Chaining the jumping moves together feels pretty cool when you can get them all in a row, but the conditions for doing so are specific and sort of rare, even moreso with other players in a hunt. It's also pretty clunky to need to land in order to pop back up, and then when you do you either get lucky and can continue (by having a wound available or getting red) to do *one* more thing or just have to get to collecting extract again. Neither is very fluid.

@@khaild7856 I figured out how to use to good old fast combo. The control is REALLY clunky. Basically you CANNOT move your left joystick while pressing triangle/Y. If you press triangle/Y while standing still AND with all 3 extracts, you will perform the fast combo. Again, this is SO clunky. This weapon just feels unnecessarily difficult to play mechanically for some reason.

i like that they gave better ways to gain extracts and a way to spend extracts for a like finisher. but i really don't like the aerial changes and how the new finisher thing that spends your extracts throws you into the air but can't really be followed up with anything so it kinda just feels weird to use. i really wish they let you choose playstyle preference for people that enjoyed the more air based combat associated with ig. also kinda feels like the wound thing can just make ig feel even worse in multiplayer, where you'll spend your extracts expecting to use a wound to refill them then some longsword user pops it instead.

With how big this game is looking to be, I'm expecting there will be a number of skills you can swap out and an aerial option. Grounded in early game and then we learn to fly. Really enjoying it so far, now that all attacks follows up with the kinsect, you get essence really easily, even with other players taking wounds. (I am so eager to replace grandma kinsect tho)

Of course there will be pros and cons. Pro: 1. Powder and Assist kinsect is now merged into one nicely, in a way that it is not overpowering, because you still have to chose, can’t do both powder and assist at the same time. 2. Obviously focus mode makes all weapon feels better doing sidestepping combo while maintaining accuracy. 3. Assist kinsect moves also grab extract, it’s a smoother way to gain extract than shooting. Con: 1. The removal of air bounce is outright kills versatility. Some trolls actually think this is a good thing. But no. It is objectively bad. There are a lot of things could be done to balance it out rather than completely removing it. 2. Button mappings feels off, especially those 2 channeling button hold moves. 3. Wound strike gaining 3 extracts feels nice in the beginning, until you realize how cheap that is. Defeating the purpose of carefully collecting and managing extracts. Similar problem with how cheap gaining spirit with Long Sword. I would rather they gain extract harder but keep the powered moves requirement with only red buff instead of all 3.

If mounting damage was too good due to air bounce, they could have just remove mounting damage after first bounce. I very much liked air bounce for better positioning. I would be satisfied with just one bounce since being able to use mid air evade is also an option then. I didn't want to use helicopter move at all in beta because that meant I will be in ground after long animation so better just use charged dive move instead But I bet devs removed it because they wanted to go back to original insect glaive, not realizing both styles can co-exist and aerial IG is part of the weapons identify at this point

All weapons have evolved to be as they are today, just like Greatsword, originally it couldn’t be charged at all, heck it didn’t even have Charged Slash II nor True Charged Slash, but now it is part of GS identity, just like Insect Glaive, aerial playstyle is already part of its identity. It is perfectly fine for people to choose grounded combo instead of aerial combo, it is an option, just like how GS has options too in Sunbreak it has Surge Slash Combo instead of charging slash combo.

If you just want the bug to attack alongside you focus mode is "assist style" but you can still just mark the monster straight up and carry on. Focus mode thrust attack is auto triple up on a wound but you can also charge kinsect like GU (and sorta like speed bug from Rise I guess) to pierce and collect several extracts which bonkers and makes maintaining extracts insanely easy even with starter bug. With GU it'd just collect the last extract it hit, in Wilds it can collect all three in a single go if you're decent with it (or at least 2/3 and maybe a small heal)

No debate needed here, if IG got all the new moves it got, AND kept everything it used to have, it would have been perfect… Right now us IG mains are angry because we gave up the fun fantasy of flying around, the old color buffs rework (red not giving additional attacks anymore) and even the kinsect drill, to in exchange only getting some kinsect moves (that would have worked even if we kept it all together), VERY BADLY made controls, and a CHARGED attack that gets old after 30 minutes of gameplay… We have a right to be angry, if these things were only additions to the already really fun IG no one would be upset.

Ig was the best disengage-engage weapon there was, that was what made it fun too. You also already compensated by not being constantly on the monsters ass like a longsword and hammer do, but by carefully weaving through the air. World/Iceborne glaive is by far the most fun and versatile weapon in all of Monster Hunter, so its sad to see that the MH team prioritizes viability over fun factor that much

My problem with IG is that it isn't fun. The triangle combos on the ground are useless and slower now and the most optimal way is to just spam the new hold circle combo with some aerial's which get really old really fast. Since wounds are shared ig is going to suffer in group play especially.

Personally I do find it fun, especially since being grounded means I’m forced to engage with the monster’s mechanics instead of buzzing around avoiding everything with ease. World was my first MH game and I played almost exclusively aerial (until Iceborne) just because it was easier that way. That being said, I fully agree that it sucks the rest of the weapons moveset feels suboptimal. I can definitely see the IG suffering immensely due to multiplayer wound sharing, however I feel like the charged extract collection + faster kinsects would help a fair bit here.

IG is just one of the weapons that got the short end of design. I feel incredibly bad for lance mains right now as well. If you skipped rise and sun break I think you'd be feeling the hit. Even if you played generations or older MH.

We're more encouraged than before to jump often, but without any of the risk, monster interaction, or general substance that came with it before. It boils down to RSS spam the weapon. The best alternative you can do is to use the one ground combo and its charge attack forever and never drop extracts. Neither is fun, engaging, or challenging.

not many people notice this but you can attack with ∆ while also holding a charge and then release it when the combo from ∆ ended. visually this combo flow much better than just spamming charge O only. and it works both on basic ∆ attacks and focus ∆ attack with the kinsect.

@@camjohnson2504 if you have a controller with a gyroscope or are just on ps5, i’d recommend turning on motion sensor aiming as well, and messing around with the sensitivity to get it where you like it. you can have set to only turn on in certain situations, like just aiming the slinger, or only in focus mode or for aiming bowguns. makes quick aiming for wounds waaaaaaay quicker than fuddling around with the R stick. as a gunner, gyro aim is game changing… main reason i’m playing Rise over World while waiting for Wilds’ full release 😅

I can live with losing the aerial playstyle since that was new to World and wasn't in earlier games where I still played the IG, but I am worried about the weapon becoming too reptitive. With it being so easy to get extracts and the finisher giving you those extracts right back, it seems like the weapon is just going to rely on spamming it's finisher. I'm fine with them nerfing the aerial playstyle since it did make you nearly untouchable, but if the weopon is just going to rely on spaming a finsher, then after aver half a decade of maining IG, this might be where we part ways.

@@Haxorus2008 The finisher will give you two of your three extracts if it connects with the monster leaving only one before you can use it again. Additionally, the IG can make three wounds every mount on top of the ones you and your team makes, so there will almost always be wounds if you need them. Plus charging the kinsect can get all three extracts in one go. I have been playing around with the new IG in the beta and trust me when I say that if you want to spam the finisher you can use it just about every other attack. It's supper spammable and I'm worried worried about what that will mean for those who want to use the weapon effectively.

@@willpeabody1901 It's a fair concern tbh. The loop of infinite combo and every move in the moveset being useful, leading to a methodical dance with a monster are feeling a tad .. awkward right now. The thing I hated about Rise/Sunbreak was that IG had it's wirebug damage gatekept behind a tedious aerial wind up mechanic that made me switch to dual blades. They kept the same philosophy here though it seems where you just wanna spam a finisher/wirebug/whatever high profile move as much as possible removing all personality and expression from a hunt if you want to play effectively.

As a glaive weapon, it is fun to use. In a vacuum it is a fun high mobility weapon with quick combos. But as an INSECT glaive? It just aint the same… I wish we didn’t have to sacrifice the identity of the weapon to improve its ground options. Sunbreak IG will always be my beloved.

I don't miss aerial, too. For me, the fastest ways to get triple buff are either a well placed charged kinsect near the shoulder (can get all 3 extracts at once) or a handful of focus strikes.

@@RicochetForceWhat do you mean? Not having full extracts feels awful. Before, you could collect red and white for the full move set and a damage buff. Then collect orange to refresh the timer. There is no management in wilds. You need to have triple extracts at all times.

Personally I much prefer this version of glaive. Flying through the sky was fun but that's about it, it was pretty weak and fairly repetitive so I found Worlds Glaive got boring quickly. To me the Glaive is a grounded polearm weapon that can be used to vault youself into the air and perform an aerial attack or two, while you have a bug companion battle alongside you and collect you various buffs. This is my favourite version of Insect Glaive to date.

I hope they didn't lock the new strong moves behind charging. That just doesn't feel like IG to me. Sunbreak really perfected the IG gameplay for me and it feels like it's nowhere to be found here :(

Rise reigns supreme. Wilds is just focus mode, get Triple Up instantly. Spam Spiral Slash. Enjoy rarely using Kinsect ever again. Game really relys on players that have not played MH or just World. Rise and 4G keep winning.

Funny thing is, 4u's IG was a 90% grounded weapon 10% aerial just to deal with flying threats Wilds ig is closer to it's original identity (if only it wouldn't rely so much on charging attacks)

@@esspooki3813 closer in the shallowest ways only. RSS is a move that puts hunters into the air. It's also the move that's meant to be spammed as often as possible. If you're referring to just using the vault and swings only for mounting spam in 4, then yes. But in 4 and every title after that, it has been much deeper than that, aerial attack chaining included.

I love the insect glaive in risebreak. Elemental Insect glaive gameplay in MHRSB was relatively a beast compared to its previous rendition. Really love how they reintigrated the multihit attacks aspect of the weapon. Infinite combo (4 ultimate) and tetraseal slash (risebreak) have been my favorite way to play IG. I just love weapons that dish out elemental damage, and I am happy that it seems in Wilds I would retain my trifecta of elemental melee weapons (dual blades, insect glaive, and sword and shield).

My biggest gripe with IG now is that the dive attack is an arial charged attack that needs all 3 buffs to be used. It was an awesome way to dive at a head and get and extract. . I find it really clunky to press and charge the ability during other ability animations . Holding the vault combination of buttons while charging the dive has my thumb doing some gymnastics.b

My main issue with the weapon is that the new combo that even tho its flashy it feels clunky and with a lot more maintenance. On top of the the iG also didnt get any offset or perfect dodge mechanic which is supposed to be something new added in this game but i guess IG aint good enough for that. Idk to me it feels they added something new just to say they added something to it. The flow isnt there anymore and it feels like it lost more than it gained.

Good to hear that you love insect glaive. At shallow level, this weapon sucks. They messed up all our muscle memory for this weapon. But the gameplay itself is actually good. Might still be my main after Hunting Horn. Imo Hunting Horn is the best.

I’m not sure if people are aware, you have I-frames when you vault backwards. So for example if you’re facing the monster do: PlayStation R2 + X Xbox R2 + A While holding back. This will give you I-frames during the vaulting animation. This only works for backwards vaulting.

The biggest thing that made IG stand out in World was its aerial capabilities. Yes, you can dodge a lot of attacks with it, but you also can get knocked out of the air easily and punished simply because of a monster's hit box. Now that Wilds has grounded IG, it feels no different from the other weapons, theres no differentiating factor from the others other than the kinsect, which imo was the weakest part of the IG in World (Ive played many hours of IG in World). They should have doubled down on the aerial capabilities of the IG instead of the kinsect, the amount of buttons you have to hold is kinda ridiculous for a none charging weapon. The IG moveset in this demo is not misunderstood by the players, its not some underrated gem, its poorly designed, clunky, and has a learning curve as steep as Charge Blade (and I say this as a charge blade main). The weapon combat team has mostly done a good job with the movesets (Ive tried all weapons except the bow/bowguns and hammer), but they majorly fumbled with IG. I dont know if its fixable before release, but it could be fixable post release

What's *Wild* to me (pun intended) is that the Kinsect has actually become less important. It's only purpose is extracts, which now requires potentially 0 management of the Kinsect itself. They gutted the aerial kit. They made Kinsect more ignorable. What's left, the ground combos right? Well, they not only made those *one* combo and a charge move, they reduced the damage ground combo strikes deal as well. On top of making them slower. I just worry it’s going to get left behind via power creep. It doesn’t have a perfect dodge, block, or offset attack. Every weapon has one of those things and I’m thinking as the game goes on they may make monsters make use of those mechanics more.

Huh.. this fixes my main problem with the insect glaive in that if I'm fighting a monster that is particularly squirrely and is bouncing around all over the place i tend to only have 10 seconds of buff time on the monster and spend the rest of it either trying to get the buff back or dodging/ trying to catch the monster. Being able to collect the things while in melee and just using normal attacks is a major quality of life bonus.

You know one of my hopes for wilds is as you progress and gather new weapons and armor, some weapons will actually have the ability to change their moveset. Such as say you get a new insect glaive then that insect glaive has the same functionality as mhworlds insect glaives (being able to vault in specific directions like mhworlds, has mhworlds attack patterns, etc)

Ground Glaive being THE way to play is a bad decision imo. What made glaive a unique and interesting weapon was its mobility and aerial movement. I made so many cool very close dodges thanks to the stay in the Air combo, and Imo ground glaive is maybe half as fun as arial glaive. Its a shame fun factor isn't the main focus for them, I would genuinely call this glaive way worse than worlds, despite my over 1000 glaive hunts in World im considering not using it here as its essentially a different weapon atp

The worst part is, ground glaive isn't even *the* way to play. The way to play is pressing x while waiting for the other move to charge and spamming RSS as much as possible (which is super often because extracts are super easy). I went into the beta expecting maybe a better grounded glaive, but with the aerial kit reduced to at best repositioners. It was so much worse. I dropped it entirely just over halfway into my 20+ hour playtime.

@princetbug I feel that. I already hated Rise Glaive for locking Mhworld skills behind the dumb Wirebug bullshit and dropped it there, but I will at least try to learn to love this one. I just need the bounce off of monsters back, the new added stuff is so good, but taking it's identity is brutal for no reason. It's not as bad as rises glaive but I doubt it will feel half as good as worlds glaive in the finished game

21:19 I have heard that there is a setting to change focus mode so that you press the button to activate/deactivate it instead of having to hold the button. But I haven’t played the beta yet so idk where it is.

While I do like how they made kinsect and extracts more of a focus, giving players not of a reason to stay more on the ground, I feel like removing the ability to stay in the air removes a lot of IG’s identity and fun. Regardless of what it was before, it BECAME the aerial weapon and that is what drew in a lot of players, myself included. And yeah, it’s upsetting that option was taken away. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the weapon is dead, there are still a lot of good things about glaive now. I only wish they left in the OPTION to stay in the air. And don’t give me “the aerial thing is only a world and rise thing” like no duh, but that’s what I became known for. Imagine if they removed LS’s counters or GS’s charged attack. Yes I know changes are going to happen. But we are allowed to to be upset by them.

I noticed that you didn't take advantage of the monster's weakspot, specially rey dau. Rey Dau is vulnerable right after executed it's powerful volt charge, giving a red glow on it's head for a short time, you can hit it with focus strike to to deliver a massive damage and gain all 3 buff. Same goes to Chatacabra when get exhausted, it reveals it's long tounge that glows red (similar to wound) that is an opportunity for focus strike. Dosha's mechanic is a bit different, it opens all it's wound when enrage giving you opportunity to re-strike another focus combo. I think all monster in Wilds will have this type of openings for focus strike so make it a habbit of checking it from time to time. Im an IG main as well and I'm a bit disappointed when I realized I can't bounce in the air anymore but they gave us more QoL in exchange so I guess It's completely fine.

When your kinsect attacks with you in focus mode it will extract from the body parts it hits as well. So you have many different ways to extract now. Also it's not all attacks. If you don't have the kinsect attached to you it won't attack along with your focus attacks and it won't attack during your charged (circle) descending slash attack at all.

Nah, they stripped the fun out of it, I am not interested in optimal this, optimal that. I just want the aerial flying back. It made the weapon feel much more unique. Hard pass for me.

A lot of people seem to have an issue with how many buttons you need to hold. You can at least go into setting and change to so focus mode no longer needs a hold input but a single button press to enter and exit, so that should help a little.

Thank you for this video! I'm embarrassed to say that I am an IG main and I didn't know about several new things that were added including the L2 Circle finisher, the piercing kinsect, the focus kinsect strikes or the aerial focus strike. I was okay with using it as it was, but this really showed me that the weapon skill ceiling was just raised. I am newly excited to hop back in and practice! =)

Ngl the changes are pretty drastic. I started Wilds with IG but quickly put it away because it was just overwhelming (- IG main too btw). After some hours of LS and CB, I finally picked it up again and practiced all the new moves. Fast forward: totally worth it, IG feels amazing and positioning is the key for good damage now. This video here pretty much described my Wilds IG journey :D

I just want to say because of you I gave Insect Glaive a chance tonight and I think I'm going to main it in the full release! Because of you I now see wounds as currency which I can cash in for triple buff in order to use my charged attacks with that massive follow up attack that is so satisfying over and over again. So thank you for this video and I look forward to your content when the game releases at end of February! I'm also thinking there may be new armor and weapon skills that unlock more aerial potential later on but maybe I'm just coping! 😂

Btw you can change Focus Mode to Toggle instead of Hold in setting (you can even choose which of the two to use on either Melee or Ranged weapons so it's really handy)

As someone who played the OG insect glaive from 4U and actually didn't care for the infinite aerial style in World, this just feels like a return to form for me.

But why does it need to ‘return to form’ when every other weapon just got more than what it had before. Bow no longer needs to farm phials, and gets tracking shots, gunlance doubled the number of wyvernblasts, longsword now gets to both cancel a failed helmbreaker and use a follow up. Kinsect? Lost out on any aerial combo. The new spiral is started on the ground and ends on the ground. No combo into or out of it.

World is my first ever MH and I agree, if you focused solely on aerial attacks you're doing a disservice to yourself and to the weapon. The way is using all attack to be a non-stop hitting machine according to the situation, most weapons can't reposition while attacking at the same time, that was the purpose for those aerial moves... not a replacement for DPS and playstyle just another tool... Also how boring it would be move just to spam one move, like the people who can't play fighting games...

It sucks and I'm talking from ground ig perspective. First of all, the ground combo has no flow. They are there just as a tool to collect extracts. Then needing to hold circle is very clunky, the solutions are similarly clunky too like holding triangle+circle for more consistent downthrust or placing your fingers in some specific ways. The gimmicks are cool but we only get one and in mp we are competing with other players. In the end all of those are only to feed rising spiral slash, it's boring.

Im loving the new IG but my only gripe is you cant take advantage of any of the new counter mechanics like Perfect Guard, Offset Attack, and not even a Perfect Dodge. You are kind of forced to used another weapon that takes advantage of most of these gimmicks if you want to get value out of it.

Lacking a perfect dodge or an offset is like... The one thing I take issue with. They should add perfect dodges to the backvault and the aerial copter, and/or make the charged spin or Tornado Slash an offset move. Otherwise, I'm just not feeling like the changes hurt the weapon. Even the aerial play doesn't feel bad, personally. Edit: Oh right, and the charged bug drill doesn't alter height so it just flies over short monsters if you're on an incline. Pls fix Capcom.

@@FelisImpurrator yes this. I feel like there's a lack of interaction with the monster because there arent any new defensive mechanics for it to use. There has to be a trade-off somewhere even with the new charge attack mechanic, if other weapons have insane fundamental improvements on top of the new mechanics then IG from a fundamental standpoint has to be the most improved by a mile if its going to lack these new features.
