It has wonderful air conditioning inside if you really want to know :) Narrator tells you that protection was first priority, but he doesn't tell you WHY. Reason is - in 1073, the "Yom-Kippur War" that was our worst war - we were surprised and attacked by tank forces 10 times bigger than ours (Russian models of the period) - on the Golan height - we had lots of casualties. The way people die in tanks is horrible. When any projectile manages to come through the armor - it burns everyone inside the tank alive. We're Jews and we just can't have it happening to our soldiers. Hence - the new tanks were designed to avoid the terrible scenes of 1973. That's also why the air-conditioning is so powerful. It can cool down the interior of the tank in seconds, no matter what. Save lives. Today's Merkava is also admirably offensive - it will stand against any other - but the protection is still its greatest attribute.

Chieftain was tested by IDF, IIRC before 6 Days War, but UK refused to provide them to IL due to political post 6DW considerations. That was what pressed IDF to start developing an indigenous design, leading, in the end, to the MERKAVA.

The Israelis have it right. The most important tech feature is to protect the well trained tank crew who are more adaptive with - out of the box thinking - than some AI algorithm. Incremental refinements promoted by the end users instead of a committee of engineers makes the difference on the battlefield.

My son drove the Merkavah(Chariot) 4 for 3 years.Since we don't have enough tanks, after his 3 years service he became recon infantry in combat active reserves. I was in from 1970-1990 as recon infantry specialized anti-tank.all my brothers were either navy missle boats or infantry, as our many sons and nephews. Most israelis do full 2-3 year draft service.

I had the privilege of working on the Merkava II at a repair base for a time and was thrilled to ride in one on a test field. It simply impressed me to no end in 1990. The V version must be out of this world. Glad the IDF is putting crew first as always and incorporating the best technology in the world to be the preeminent force in the region.

Israel used British Centurion tanks, and fitted most of them with Diesel engines. They've been in service until the 1990's, and were replaced by MerKava Mk 3 tanks. I don't think Israel ever had Chieftain tanks.

@@astemet The Merkava? no it's a completely original design. Israel had Centurions in service alongside the Merkava I and II, and then when III came along it replaced the Centurions. I think the Merkava was influenced by the Centurion in its suspension system, and the Merkava III onwards had electric turret motor which is also like the Centurion and unlike American tanks that Israel had.

Aside from pronouncing the name wrong the video hits many important points in its evolution. Unless the international tank competitions are held in Yis’rael we will never see the Mer’kavah (Chariot - מֶרְכָּבָה) in a competition, it’s to big to transport by air; even the C-5 Galaxy isn’t big enough. Aside from the 4 crew members it has room for 4 ground troops who can exit on the move through the rear armored evacuation hatch. The hatch has been improved for faster deployment and the speed of its interlocking doors is impressive. I’m not sure if the main gun can fire on the fly as accurately as the M1-A2 Abrams but the standing range is almost identical. As with every nation, Yis’rael doesn’t release every detail, but I’d feel safer in the Mer’kavah than most other countries top tanks. It’s defenses are very impressive and though the armor os classified, the low profile turret would be very hard to hit face on. ה' יברך את ישראל.

I like the shape of the turret also but with the newer missiles, the attack is almost always from above not head-on or from the side. Looking at it from above, it has a lot of flat plate that is butter unless it defeats the missiles with the Trophy system. With suicide drones and new smart missiles, I would not want to be in a tank in the next war.

Israelhas upgraded the Mer’kavah with numerous defense systems against aerial attacks of various kinds. They are way out in front of us in that area. After 1973 (Yom Kippur War) when Egypt used ground to air missiles to force Israel’s Air Force to withdraw, Israel then attacked using the British challenger and several other types of tanks. They were met with Russian made wire guided rockets that decimated Israel’s tanks. After that Israel invested big money in overcoming these problems: hence the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, man portable drone aircraft with pinpoint targeting radar that permits Israel to fire ground missiles and artillery immediately after the drone spots a launch. The drones are relatively inexpensive so Israel saves its planes until a safe corridors opened. The rockets that destroyed so many tanks are now pppintercepted by four types of anti-rocket systems. Of course nothing is foolproof but they have tested the systems against multiple types of modern anti-tank rockets and they successfully intercepted the missiles. G-d willing it will work as well in the next actual war.

in the summer war with lebanon, the Merkava tanks were mobile coffins for IDF. There is also a well documented video of how these tanks were ambushed and fried like hamburgers. 1. Britain got Israel to both help design and help finance the Chieftain, but in the end refused to actually sell it to the Israelis, and then turned around and sold it to Israel's enemies.. I think you refer to the British Centurion tanks, of which Israel bought - 2nd hand; used and retired - lots and lots and lots as part of that financing deal. Which actually proved to be a good thing for Israel come 1973... 2. The new tank is not, in fact, a new tank, the 5th iteration of the Merkava tank, as you put it - Merkava Mark V. It is, instead, the 3rd iteration of the Mark IV. The first two were Mark 4 and Mark 4M. This newest iteration is the Merkava Mark IV "Barak". It includes a bunch of improvements, but it is not a new tank.

I love the logical design that went into developing the radically sloping turret of the mark IV that makes the T-34 Soviet tank of WW2 fame look like a half assed attempt at sopping armor. Which w turned out to be very effective in deflecting German tank rounds.

Fun fact, I served in the IDF supporting that battle management system, with one of the Elbit teams developing it. During it's first 3 or 4 years, As a whole, it was HORRIBLE, completely unreliable and had never-ending problems on the system side. It's been nearly eight years since I was involved with it, and I assume it's been improved, but it had so many teething pains...

Israel never used the chieftain. Israel signed a contract with the UK to be provided with chieftains but the UK backed off the deal. That was one of the incentives to produce the Merkava tank.

Can't be sure about that. It's probably the best tank in the world for the terrain it fights on. The tank was built specifically to fight in Israel's region while other tanks are built to fight in different kinds of terrain. For example it might have a lot of issues in area's with mud, and soft earth.
