Watching Mantle circle the bases on this film, his 500 th Homer on Mother s Day 1967, shows you how bad his legs were. He limped around the bases. The guy who called that 500 th Homer on WPIX TV in NY was The Great Marine Aviator , Yankee Player and Broadcaster, and San Diego Padre Manager and Broadcaster , Jerry Coleman. The 1909 Honus Wagner T206 Card #366 is listed in the 2002 Beckett Price Guide at $400,000.00. The Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps Card #311 is listed at $18,000.00. The 1952 Topps Card #311 was also double printed. At best estimate, less than 200 Honus Wagner T206 exist.

It is a holy grail but it’s value is partially based on the fact that the topps company dumped a large amount of 1952 topps unopened high numbered boxes (with the mantle) in the ocean rather than burn them because it was cheaper to get rid of them then store them and take up space in the factory. At the time nobody was buying them being the first year they were larger cards and kids didn’t like them because they didn’t fit in their pockets as well.

This is a great story and the 1952 Mantle is a great card but the true holy grail baseball card is the T 206 Honus Wagner card that was issued from 1909 to 1911. The last one sold fro $3.12 million and that was in 2016.
@VintageBaseballCorner6 жыл бұрын
That's true but there are more Mantle's available, yet few in high grade. The '52 Mantle is by far the most in-demand post WWII card and from a popularity standpoint and the increase in prices it is commanding, many, see it as the modern day Holy Grail. There are just so few Wagners and none in high grade. The highest graded Wagner has been found to be trimmed, making the one you are referencing the highest known graded.

I collected baseball, football and basketball cards in the 90s. All gone. Those things ended up being worth nothing in the end. It's easy to say a card is word millions, but there has to be a buyer and nobody buys cards like they did before, that's why the generation after mine stopped collecting. There are only 3 PSA 10 Gem Mint '52 Mantles in existence and they are all in private collections and none have sold in many years. A PSA 9 recently sold on Heritage Auctions for $2.88 Million, so an 8.5 should command a nice premium. The last 8.5 sold for $1.13 Million in 2016.

To each their own I guess. Supply and demand and the fact that there are so many sports fans. Some people collect rare art, antiques, classic cars, etc. Anything rare with a prominent name attached to it can have real value. Mickey Mantle was a god in the baseball world for decades, and back then nobody kept cards in good shape. Condition is everything. I love it, more fun than the stock market which is where most of my investments are. My card collection is worth around 100k and I've spent probably 15k over 25 years, so that's a pretty good return, and I enjoy the hunt so it's a win win. Key is to by low population graded cards, highest grade you can afford, hall of famers or future hall of famers. It's not for everyone, diversification is the key.
