Want an apartment in New Jersey? It will be costlier than it should be because of politicians who hold up promising developments to help their cronies.
----
To make sure you receive the weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1
----
I first covered the hold-up about 3 years ago, after I confronted Edgewater, New Jersey mayor Michael McPartland.
"Are you on the take?" I asked at a town council meeting, after he'd ignored interview requests.
He never answered.
McPartland was accused of corruptly blocking an exciting new development of hundreds of waterfront apartments -- all to protect his powerful developer friend Fred Daibes.
He and other city council members lived in one of Daibes' buildings.
A lawsuit alleged that nearly 2,000 competing apartments were blocked by Daibes and the town council.
The mayor and council got aggressive, even at one point attempting to seize the competing developer's land using eminent domain. That was stopped in court.
Since my first reporting, a few things have changed. After the developer sued, claiming corruption, McPartland and the city council switched sides. The corruption suit was dropped, and the politicians agreed to approve most of the developer's proposed construction.
Sadly, the exciting development still remains unbuilt. That's because now a spa - with close connections to Daibes, according to the developer - has sued Edgewater, saying the council was not allowed to approve the development under duress of a corruption lawsuit.
Thanks to politicians, lawyers, and their cronies, beautiful waterfront property remains... a dump. Taxpayers, and renters, lose.

Yes, the situation is disgusting but not for the reason you are suggesting. You will find the city/county legal counsel in just about every public meeting-for good reason. By itself, it does not indicate corruption. I am curious, however, when the counsel for the city pipes up to protect the mayor’s personal business and potentially act against the best interest of the city that hired him as counsel.

In the valley where I grew, the big farmers and local government got together and implemented water rights laws, which keeps smaller farmers from being able to expand their farms. You cannot put water on land that has never had it before. However, we all know the big farmers who implemented it, always expand their lands and my dad knows that they never had water rights before since he lived in the valley for about 65 years. Anytime a farmer expands his lands and puts water on land that has never had it before, no one ever tries to take him to court to make him stop. A couple years ago, another valley close by tried to do the same thing. One of the biggest farmers fought against it because he knew it would harm the smaller farmers. Since he went against it, no one else tried to push for it. Anyway, in the video Stossel says that after his report came out, the city planners push through all the other projects. In New Jersey, just like in the valley where I grew up, they are likely doing things that are highly illegal. Once Stossel's report came out, they allowed the projects through in order to keep the federal government from digging into their illegal activities. In the valley where I grew up, it is highly likely that the laws the implemented are unConstitutional, but no one around there is saying much of anything when they are broken, because it might open up a federal investigation and some politicians might go to jail for it.

The "Objectionable tone" comment was used to project their own narrative in the written transcript. The only problem is there is video and audio evidence. Bill Burr has a great riff about a woman saying "No, stop it" during an intimate encounter and the context completely changing as her comments are read in court as opposed to the way she actually said them. It's akin to cops that always say things like "Stop resisting" when the video evidence clearly shows no resistance. It reminds me of the South Park "Oh my god! It's coming right for us" episode.
@spaulding304

@@woodsrdr precisely why social media is so horrendous! Communication is 90% body language and vocal tone and thats what is missing when you talk to someone through text. It's halfway near impossible to catch sarcasm and jokes. And people avoid the consequences of talking shit to someone's face. Video evidence is the best source of evidence but, testimonies without hard evidence will sometimes be accepted and taken as the truth as well. Ridiculous crumbling justice system.

I like how every time John asked a question they both had to whisper to each other before they'd respond. John-"are you on the take" 2 guys-"we gotta get rid a dis guy, he's asking too many questions." (said in a whisper) John-"is it true that you guys"......(gets cut off) 2 guys-"just a minute....(said in a whisper) let me call vinnie, they'll never find his body." "okay, you're done here. John-"you didn't answer any questions." 2 guys-"you can sit down, you're done!" (in a whisper)"vinnie's in the parking lot, he's gonna take care a dis guy."
