@@bond10151 I have the misfortune of living in Oregon, and Oregon is not full service its government compliance. It's waiting in long lines just to get to the pump and when I get to the pump I pump my gas myself. The attendant hardly ever has a problem with it mostly because there is only one sometimes two people that are working at that gas station no matter how big the station is.

Pumping your own gas is the world standard since the late 60's/early 70's. Here in Germany, except for some Shell stations, you don't even have the option to being served at a gas station, for decades.

I don't know how pumping gas can be dangerous. Turn off your engine and don't smoke anywhere near the pumps. As of smelling like gas, you won't smell like gas as long as you're not clumsy and spill it on yourself.

@@frostbite3318 Are you an idiot or being sarcastic? Gasoline vaporizes very quickly when the container is not sealed (open gas tank). Those vapors are flambable and can reach your cigarette and the vapours will ignite. Not to mention the ground around the pump is very likely to have gasoline on it. You ash your cigarette or throw it on the ground, same thing happens.

I've been pumping my own gasoline for the past 4 years, and I've been pumping my mama's gasoline for the past 16, and I have never smelled of gasoline. Diesel on the other hand, once that gets on your hands on your clothes, that smell is on you for days. I am from North Carolina, I don't know where a full service gas station would be in my area. But I've always said this: if you drive your own car, you should pump your own gas.

Pumping gas is not a problem for me. What pisses me off is NY State telling me "You are too stupid to be trusted with a 'hold on' device on your pump." I've done some traveling and NY is the ONLY state I've come across that mandates gas stations to remove the hold on from their pumps. Thank you nanny state!

As a New Jerseyan who knows how to pump gas, I would have to disagree with people who oppose it for these reasons, DISCLAIMER: These opinions are slightly biased due to the fact that I know how to do it 1. Usually you have to wait for the employee to come and fill you up, and nobody likes waiting 2. you save a little bit of money (the extra few cents add up for big vehicles and for the insanely high prices nowadays) 3. it gives you something to do when you are at a gas station in the middle of no man's land, USA 4. no anxiety over how much and what type of gas you are getting because you don't have to trust a random guy to do it 5. its sooo easy

When i was a kid 40 years ago, we took a family road trip to what was supposed to be Oregon and Washington. Crossed the border into Oregon and stopped for gas. Some guy started screaming at my father for pumping gas. We left Oregon 20 minutes later, and spent that time in Idaho instead. Heck with them!
