Cole, I am so glad I dropped by to watch this video. I was sitting here enjoying listening to you talk about fixing and replacing then it hit me, I put my grain drill up broken after the 2018 planting. I had forgotten all about it. thanks for this video Cole.

shoup parts ... and id repace the whole thing... i have bearings go out almost as fast as the disc wears 22 bucks for the whole thing. Id assume to change blades out and save bearings would take a bunch more time than that

Nice planter. I have a 7000 also and love it. I agree with most everyone here. Get rid of the trash cleaners for tilled ground and you will not need the chains on the back. Check all the disk openers and any moving part for play. As far as seed bed prep, I found after using my field cultivator I take a set of rolling baskets to firm up the ground. The planter will not plow as bad and will give you a more uniform emergence of the corn. Just my 2 cent, and good luck this spring.

I like 7000’s. When money allows I would love to have one like yours. I’m still using a plate planter. I used to work at a dealership it’s not bad to put new blades on old bearings but I would replace all of them all at once. Mostly because it seems like it never fails if you don’t the bearing will go bad. I like that step in the front I’d leave it personally. That’s a fairly decked out planter. I personally would put drag chains on even in worked ground their cheap insurance. If you want to up grade your closing wheels the ones with T handles are a lot nicer.

Does that have 2 or 3 bushel boxes for the corn - why not use it for beans - it would work good

It's easier and less time consuming to just replace the whole blade with bearings. Chains on the back of the row units aren't going to make that big of a difference, the seed firmers will make a difference by themselves. Also the rule of thumb is any disc that is 1in less then new disc dimension should be replaced. also at the end of every plabying season, take all the drive chains off and soak them in a pail of oil for the rest of the year. Helps prolong life of chains and don't get rust spots especially on the fertilizer chains. Just some helpful tips from someone who specializes in planters at the dealership.

Never had a 6 row JD 7000 but had a brand new 7000 12 row. Good simple planter in their day. Anymore it almost cheaper to buy a 12 row. 6 rows have become hot items. Shoup will be running 10 percent off during the national farm show. Replace the whole assembly, much less work. Can tell its an early model 7000, doesnt have adjustable down pressure on the closing wheels. Also measure those seed disc opener, they look wore out to me.

Ran a 7000 4 row for 15 years. Guys already had good responses here to your questions, do the whole fert disc new, drag chains at the back not needed etc. My opinion is the seed firmers are snake oil and not needed also. Check for play in the gauge wheel arms, they are notorious for wearing out. RK Products and Shoup make fixes for that. Always have a full fert disc, gauge wheel and closing wheel on hand for during planting when one fails and a copy of a Shoup for part # lookup in the field. If you're not doing no-till I would pull off the Yetter trash wheels or at least put them at max height. Yank those insecticide boxes and chains off too I doubt you'll be using them? Are you going to put a cross auger on for dry fertilizer or auger it in because that last owner probably had the platform on there to fill by the bag - I hated that. I switched to a Kinze 2000 which itself is old and similar but with many improvements.

I found Shoup was a good place for 7000 parts. What I did with mine: replace closing wheel arm with modern Yetters. Replace opening disks, using thick versions in no till. Might as well add keeton seed firmers while in there. New bushings on the arms. I put on the rollover guage wheel hardware as well as adjustable guage wheel arms and bushings. Might want to replace the downpressure springs, they could be just for show if they are worn out and hard to figure out if they aren't working.
