As an American, I am a huge fan of British trains and their colorful liveries. On the subject of the flywheel in the power unit of this train, I have an idea. You said that when the flywheel spins, it catches the light ever-so-slightly. My solution would be to brush paint the flywheel a flat black. The flat black paint along with the smoked/tinted window would make it invisible.

That would work well!

Hello, Richard. I think it is visually stunning, and I have the Azuma from 2022. I think the price is a bit insane for what you get. If we throw out SRPs (suggested retail prices) and what you get them for, I can get a 5-car Märklin ICE4 for the same price or less, which is already fully digital with extensive sound, light, and action functions. I like Hornby, but to start a bit of a ruckus, they are not up to top continental standards, so to be priced higher with a lot less??? I love my Azuma; it's a great model and runner. I want the LumO and Avanti Pride, for £120-£150 less before shop markdowns, they would be a very comparative value-for-money of the top continentals. Just my dumb-American 2 pennies worth.

Does look an impressive model however the cost may put many off. Things in general are getting more expensive as we all know and many model railway products are no exception to this. I personally prefer the LNER version as I do in real life. As far as the Dapol 68s, I have two, neither TP , but both weathered. Stunning runners, stunningly well detailed and well made. The TP does look so good on your layout.
@FormallyknownasE10012 сағат бұрын
For my money, the TPE livery is squarely between the two of these. Accurascale / Dapol is slightly light (obviously Dapol got there first so maybe Accurascale were keen to make sure it matched. The blue on the 802 just feels like it's got just a bit too much pigment and the grey is light. Granted we only ever normally see these in the North where it's often overcast. A bit of black paint / sharpie on the flywheel might help a little.

That is an impressive looking set, and I agree the livery is gorgeous, but for me you have missed what I consider the most important part of a review of a locomotive, and that is the starts and stops. How a model starts and stops are what define its quality. These models move very smoothly once got going, and that can be partly due to excellent track, but does the realism go out the window when it comes to a station and stop, and then start?
@christopherlaycock5993Күн бұрын
I immediately went and had a look at photos after this and there is a colour difference between the 68, Mk5 carriages and the 802. The only thing I’d say is the grey on the 802 units could have been dulled down ever so slightly as per the Mk5’s

I think I agree with the general consensus in the comments, £550 is ridiculous. Assume the powered unit costs £150, that’s £100 per coach!!! The HST comparison isn’t the best in my opinion, as they’re ridiculously priced also! I believe Hornby only do it as the HST holds so much sentiment to a lot of enthusiasts so they know that they’ll sell! One HST pack or two Accurascale locos… 🤔 easy choice for me (Accurascale all the way!) If it had two motorised cars then it might be more justifiable. Was it just the one powered bogie too, or both Richard? Maybe I’m being picky but the blue doesn’t match the Dapol and Accura items, which are much closer. On a more positive note, the detail and lighting look really good and I like the easy and innovative way to fit the chip. More importantly for me tho, when are they releasing the Avanti West Coast one that seemed to vanish out of the catalog!

It's crazily expensive, but I don't think you've looked at second-hand car prices for quite a while! Unfortunately, the whole hobby has increasingly become a rich person's activity, which isn't ideal for encouraging future generations. I've come back to model railways after many years and have spent a LOT on TT120 since late 2022. I've also just taken a redundancy package (which means possible retirement) from a relatively well-paid engineering management job so that spend is likely going to slow considerably.

It does look like a fantastic model, and when they announced it initially, it was pre ordered by myself, but I did end up cancelling it in the end for a few reasons, price being one of them, but also the fact other models came out which were more of a priority for me. I'd love one of these, to go with my Dapol/Accurascale Nova 3 set. And I'd love to see Accurascale use their mk5 tooling to produce the Nova 2s too. However. £394 in 2022 is £437.51 in Nov 2024. So given Hornby weren't starting from scratch but were basing this off their 800/801 tooling, why is the price up to £550? I'd also say that for a 9-car, you really need at least 2 motor bogies. Looking at what's visible here, it has a single motor bogie, which really is inadequate. I'd love a GWR 800/0, 800008 Alan Turing. And a LNER 800/1 as a 9-car. And a TPE 802/2 as here, and a Lumo 803. But I will not pay a penny over £350 for a 5-car, which is £70 per vehicle (or £150 for the motor car and £50 per non-motorised car).
@Mitche01Күн бұрын
Tough call on the cost, most retailers sell at 494 ish, so lets break it down, 5 units for 494 is lets say 180 for the power car, leaving 314 over the 4 remaining units, thats 78.5 per coach unit. i would judge that a little high, but not too much, eg if they could get the coach price to 60, that would be 180 + (4 x 60) = 420.

Great review, stunning train, love this livery, which are different when seen together, but there are common shades of blue across them, and not really noticeable when there running and not standing together, the very slight criticism is the pantograph, there are many examples of more finessed pantographs made from metal which could have been used, and the visible flywheel is a reality v practicality issue, but none of these points are deal breakers for me. Although not a modern era modeller after seeing a LNER Azuma set running at my local MRC recently, I am now sold on this TPE set. On price, compared with other multiple units available, e.g. Bachmann' s South Western Class 159 3-Car set (2 powered cars, each PU unit needs a decoder) at a retailer for GBP560, and a bulk buy deal of 5 Accurascale detailed and lit coaches at a pre-order price of GBP109 each (GBP545), are examples that bring some perspective. Hornby's Lumo version is expected Feb 2025 and has a pre-order retailer price of GBP499.95. ...Drew

I got the GWR 800 and I find the only way you can couple the train together is to turn the carriages upside down so you have access to the couplings and then turn the train around onto the track. This is so inconvenient that I made a cradle for the complete train so it could be lifted off and back onto the track. You don't have this problem with tension lock couplings or a large storage yard. The 800 is also more demanding on track clearances so I had to remove part of a cutting and only have 1 track I can run it on. Fortunately my platform clearances were already OK. I like the snazzy Transpennine more than the GWR livery but I'm not going to buy a second.

Great looking model. The price is a bit hefty, but the recent financial predicament of Hornby is an accurate indicator of where the hobby is in terms of cost. What must be a given is that if Hornby are going to charge this price for models they have to match and exceed the quality of Accurascale, Bachmann and Dapol.

Its a stunning model and if you model the era and have the budget then I am happy Hornby has catered for you. The flip side though is the prices do emphasise the two-tier approach to model railways we seem to be moving into. There are a group of people who can afford the new releases, demand ever higher levels of detail and the manufacturers are doing pretty well in catering to this group. The flip side is there is a growing number of us who operate at the other end of the spectrum. We cannot justify these prices, and even £100 for a Railroad diesel is way out of our price bracket. My interest is the early 2000s, so my fleet is almost entirely made up of second hand Hornby and Lima models that are now pushing 25-30 years old. These used to be available around the £30 price point (although they are now pushing £50 most of the time) and even these are a considerable outlay. We are still modelling and having fun, but 90% of what we buy is second hand. I have a friend who is unable to work and he has an extensive model railway mostly made up of 60 year old Triang locos picked up at shows for under £10 as that is in his price range. I do feel like we are often forgotten about as modellers- even Hornby Magazine's idea of a 'budget; layout project was £500- certainly by the model railway press and even, although there are exceptions, by the KZbin content creators. I certainly don't want to turn this into a battle between the two schools of modelling as that has been done to death and I don't think is helpful, and even on my own limited budget I love the content put out there by many youtubers as it is inspirational (you, Dean park, Everard Junction etc) and I take many ideas that I can adapt to suit my own circumstances, but I do feel we are a large, but largely ignored section of the hobby.
@alanrobertson9790Күн бұрын
" two-tier" definitely, the hobby is for well-off boomer pensioners (like me) than kids pocket money. I do wonder what will happen to the hobby in 20 years time when the pensioners have died off. My kids liked computer games not railways. Lima were not only cheap but very reliable. Just an occasional change of traction tyres. Even I have my limits. Its difficult to justify £500 expenditure on a train to my wife so will have to pass on this, spectacular though it is.

@@NewJunction I have an excel spreadsheet where I compared the price of locos using my manufacturer catalogues against the earnings index and comparing say Hornby 1970s with Bachmann or Hornby 2022 you are right, similar affordability. *From 1970 to 1990s the prices relative to earnings fell whereas from 2004 to 2022 prices rose.* For example Bachmann 2022 are about 40% more expensive than 2004. The golden age of affordability would be the 1990s when Lima were prevalent. However whilst the affordability in 2022 was comparable to 1970 the locos are far more complex so not comparing like for like. I simply took the most expensive and the cheapest models in the catalogue so this analysis is not very sophisticated. I have not continued this analysis but I would imagine that 2022-24 this index would continued to have risen.
@EdwardHallettКүн бұрын
@@NewJunction I'm not disputing that, I remember being a teenager in the late 90s/early 2000s and new locomotives were out of my budget even then, I remember being thrilled when I got a new Hornby class 47 for £50 in Beatties with the money for my 18th birthday because it was the first time I had ever bought a loco new. I don't even think the prices today are too outrageous, as the models are gorgeous, detailed and have many features we could only dream about and I certainly don't begrudge people these models if they can afford them. My point is rather that the prices do emphasise the split in modellers, and I do feel like there are a lot of us at the opposite end of the price bracket who are ignored or forgotten about, especially in the mainstream model railway media. The teenager starting out, the guy on a limited income, or with family commitments- they don't have the budget for the latest Hornby or Accurascale products but are still out there, building layouts, making do with second hand track and rolling stock or having a go with home made bits. Its still modelling, still being creative but if you looked at the model railway press you would think these people didn't exist. I do feel that if the hobby is to grow, we need to shine a light on these modellers, their techniques and layouts occasionally just to highlight that not everyone needs lots of money to join in with the hobby.

I have the LNER version and dad got the TPE 1. My only criticism on both sets is the DVT could do with pick ups on both boggies rather than just 1. I had to fit a stay alive to mine just to stop the decoder resetting and mucking up the light functions awhlie running. They are fantastic models otherwise

The price is the price, buy or do not buy. This has taken 3 years to come to market, and the price has increased several times. Not the only model that has taken this long (Black 5, 2MT etc). Order direct from Hornby on announcement day and you fix the price. Then you have time to save up if you need to.
@TomScrutКүн бұрын
Have they changed the lighting? I recall reading somewhere they were adding separate day/night lighting to them, despite the fact they don't have that in real life as far as I am aware. I had a pre order with Hornby at £400. Due to the uncertainty about the end colouring (which they have improved since) I cancelled it. I'll probably bite of they get down to that price again but given they seem to be sold out at quite a few places I might struggle. That is unless the stock they have had so far was rushed in for year end and there's another batch following on. I am just struggling with the price of this when my Revolution 180 with ESU sound is going to cost less! Really need somebody to do a 185!
@TomScrutКүн бұрын
I do also think that the colour issue was started by Dapol getting it so wrong to begin with. Hornby have actually got it as close to right on the end as anyone. I suspect that Accurascale maybe went the correct side of the Dapol one but didn't go too far knowing they had to sit together with the 68.

I think its a great model to be fair! Not my era im 80s to 90s NSE (Hence why i have 6 50s) but im trying to make a seperate layout thats like a preserved layout. I think an 80x would be nice to have say for a background running line where the mainline and preserved line cross over (As my preserved line is northerly based) but it's too expensive!

You see the first variants come up for £300 mark, so in time I'm sure a bargin will be found.

Thats a great looking model. I usually go for 1970's era models, but at the NFRM in November (ex Warley) I saw the Hornby Flirt and thought that it looked fabulous, I'll consider buying one of those when they appear. Nice to see the videos coming more often!

Hi Richard. A key issue for me is whether Accurascale are going to do a second run of their TPE set. I believe you’ve said that one is planned.

Brilliant review but if you're on a budget these recent prices seem to be going up and up. I'm exclusively buying second hand now for my layout, which is a shame as it feels like the hobby becomes less friendly to people starting out each year at these price points.

For £500 I would expect low slung motors with mini flywheels in every trailer for a more prototypical drive system. Having a large motor in one driving trailer is more akin to a 225 set, just doesn't seem right to me.

Although you focused more on comparing the blue shades between the Horny/Dapol/Accurascale models, for me it is the grey of the colour scheme that seems to be the issue. The real thing is a kind of metallic grey finish - when I saw the Hornby TPE on the Hornby show at a stand, it looked really bright white, which looked completely wrong. The Dapol and Accurascale (which I have) seem to have captured this well. Difficult to tell on the video, because as you say it is affected by lighting and settings, but how does the Hornby grey/white background on the production coaches look when alongside the Dapol/Accurascale train? Do they actually look like they are the same livery?

Due to the fact that TPE have been in 'government hands' for a while, the sets should be produced without the 'A First Group Company' branding. We don't need reminding of the farce that was. Other than that, Hornby have done a great job and the model looks fantastic

Hornby need to urgently address the issue of constant delays and price rises. They need to wait until a model is tooled and they have working samples before announcing items. This way customers don't get frustrated with arrival dates being constantly changed and more importantly, Hornby have a better idea over the final price so it doesn't keep going up with each year the project is delayed.

I am thinking of getting this pack as I have the Mk5s and it would be good to run them side by side, when it comes to y(e price it is expensive and it will make people complain but unfortunately it’s the reality of wanting things like this, units will always bring with them a fairly high price and unfortunately buyers just don’t want that to be the reality but unfortunately it is and it’s time they started accepting it, as I say I am thinking of getting this purely because I also have the Mk5s but also when I used to go to Leeds for my job I also got to see them on occasion departing platform 16, unfortunately 8 don’t get to see them as muc( now as I don’t go to Leeds for my job.
