Every now and then in the last few years I've came across this video and it's made me realize it's not a Tuba's range that makes them recognizable, it's their tone. I always just focused on how high or low they could play a few years ago, but tone is the most important part. If you were to hear øystein play without seeing him, you would know it's øystein. Range isn't a problem for me when it comes to this piece, it's tone. Playing pedal tones with good tone is easy, but playing high notes with a tone that makes it as if you almost couldn't tell if it was a euphonium or a tuba playing is hard. Øystein makes it sound easy.

day 36 of listening to this masterpiece for an entire year this being comment #750, I'll say that this song reminds me of some kind of dystopian ballroom dance. It's as if the two partners dance and as they lock eyes with one another, the song slows down, and one of them starts fading away from existence. During the melodic return, it stops temporarily. After the meoldy plays for the final time, however, the partner completely fades, leaving the other in an empty room in a depressive state.

I thought I was pretty good at playing euphonium in my high school band. Then the other day I looked at over at the tuba player next to me and he had this song on his stand, blasting out on high e flats and f’s (on a b flat tuba!)

My chops would’ve died out in the first 10 measures. You are amazing.

One way to build chops for it is to play it; that's what I did and I can roughly get through the entire piece.

Dang he is good!!! I wish I could be like him. I play a BBb tuba and my highest (pretty sounding note) is the C above middle C. I've only been playing 2 years, though. I've got plenty of time to listen to oysteins' amazing work and try to learn a thing or two... :)
