At first glance, it might not seem like the most obvious of comparisons, but I’m told that a lot of people want to know what works best as a reading device - the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite or the iPad mini 6. So, I put both to task! This is what I discovered.

Which one would you pick out of the Kindle and the iPad mini... and why?
@Medz1100
@Medz1100 2 жыл бұрын
And to answer your question, I think it has to be the Kindle. I've have tried the iPad mini but it is too distracting. As you point out, it's all that other "stuff" that lies behind the Kindle app on the iPad. I keep checking emails and err, I'll just google this and that. The Kindle does what it says on the tin and doesn't present to be anything other than an e reader. That said, if you were stuck in the middle of a snow storm (for want of a better example) give me an iPad any day!

Kindle. First of all, the eye strain. E-ink has always been better for me. And yes, it is distraction free. iPad is for all the other things I do. I'm a teacher, I have all of my textbooks on the iPad, I do the grading on it, presentations during lessons, etc. But for the bedtime reading, anytime reading it is the Kindle.

One thing to consider: the type of books you intend to read. I read a lot of technical stuff - heavyweight books that are outdated in two years and that you would never put onto the bookshelf in your living room ... so I thought a Kindle is just perfect for that. But in these books you often search and go back and forth - and this is such a pain with epaper. So I guess for just reading novels it is a complete different story, but for material you use more as a reference book - imo pretty unusable.

@@usivaguru9150 Theoretically, yeah, one could. I need it to read math textbook at the moment and almost every time there's a new topic, past theorems are named. I could write every theorem, but there are hundreds.
@nmbr73
@nmbr73 2 жыл бұрын
@@usivaguru9150 It's more about working with a book. "Ah, don't know that term - let's look into the glossary; want to know how to do this, so let's see the index where to find corresponding text; uh, now that they are using that, I get aware that I did not really understood the concept explained some pages before; okay, to solve this I need the definition of the formula defined in that chapter". So if it's about math, coding, applications, or the like - you don't take notes of everything "I want to change the texture - there was a chapter on the corresponding dialog in that 500 pages Blender book - but now I see that I have to multi-select the objects first - there was a chapter on navigating the 3D space somewhere very early in this book". Or such books where you have some test questions at the end of each chapter - and to see if you got the answer right, or if you are unsure, you have to jump back to the corresponding text. Long story short: my point is that I believe today e-ink devices are perfect for "linear reading" - like you do when reading a novel. But for navigating back and forth, searching, and jumping form here to there - for me it turned out to be completely unusable on a real Kindle, and to be so much better on a tablet (even when using the Kindel-App on the iPad) or even a "real" book on paper.

One of the biggest plus points for me with the Kindle is that it allows you to read in direct sunlight. This is especially useful in the garden during the summer and by the pool when on holiday. I have both devices and in terms of strain on the eyes, again, the Kindle is a clear winner. I too read in bed quite a lot and experience tells me that my wife much prefers me to be on the Kindle instead of the iPad. The iPad is amazing for so many other things, but I wouldn't be without the Kindle.

I have the new iPad Air, and I think the iPad mini would be more convenient for reading due to the manageable one-hand size. But still, I wanted the Kindle for a long time and finally got one recently and I love it. Four reasons I ultimately choose it for my reading: the battery longevity, generally easier on the eyes, not overheating in direct sunlight, and lack of glare reading outside. The iPad screen protector mentioned in the video would help with the glare, but it probably still won’t be as great as the Kindle’s build-in screen. Reading outside is all around a better experience with the Kindle, in my experience.

I went for iPad mini since it allowed me read my books from the library apps 😅 I read so much the cost for the books on kindle versus (on hold/free) via library virtual is great. Also I downloaded the kindle app on it as well and it allows me to look for more obscure books (indie), so it just made sense. Although the brightness is an issue, I got a screen protector which does help a little.

I use the Kindle app on iPhone SE. As with iOS iBooks, I get on with it well for my reading purposes. Upside is it is palm-of-hand reading and I don’t have to have an additional device with me. Easy to snatch a bit of reading anywhere/any time. Downside is that there is need for frequent scrolling/page changes due to small screen. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the actual Kindle screen technology allows easy reading in direct/strong sunlight in a way that the iOS devices do not. Personally, if I want to read out in the open, the iOS system is not ideal, suffering distracting reflections, and turning up the brightness to get good contrast of text vs background uses more battery.

I’ve owned both: let me summarize your choice. Do you want to read a ton of fiction books at many different conditions and lighting environments? Get a kindle. If you want to read nonfiction, magazines, and/or fiction with a chance that you’ll want to highlight or make notes, get an iPad mini (even a 4th or 5th edition). Possibly get a Samsung tablet for cheap reading.

TIP: dim your ipad for late night reading by setting triple tap to zoom (accessibility) (and setting zoom level to original size). Haven’t checked the latest Kindle, but formerly I could get a darker screen on my ipad than on a Kindle at minimum brightness. Could get over 12 hours charge at low low brightness. Unfortunately, best reader depends on book. Novel = Kindle Novel, taking notes & looking things up = ipad Novel with maps = Kindle for words, nearby ipad for maps Manual, textbook = ipad Magazines, newspaper = ipad Comic = 13” ipad or convertible laptop Artbook = hardcopy book, unless you find graphic ebooks that are not super compressed like Amazon’s I’ve owned 4 ipads and 5 Kindles, and used them all a lot. The only devices I’ve found unsatisfactory for reading were Surface Book 2 (heavy screen with hard corners), Levano Yogi 10” (over heavy battery), and every smartphone (small screens and a drain on batteries). So far I haven’t used my Kobo readers much either…although I’m not sure why; they seem nice.

Sigh - I’m a long time ebook reader, and what keeps me reading on my iPad mini, is the fact that my iBooks library is as large as my Kindle library😂. I chase ebooks on sale, where ever they are and they’re not always price-matched, and I tend to stick to long series from the same store. Also, iBooks is rather lovely, I love that books get stacked together in series in the iBooks library (kindle only does this for kindle and android devices). However, iBooks audiobooks and Audible seem to be working together because when I occasionally buy an audiobook from their regular sales for $4.99 or $9.99 in iBooks, they show up in my Audible library.

I have the newest basic Kindle, and it has a couple more features than the one reviewed here. For the cost, and for what I needed it's perfect for me. I have a laptop that I use about 3 times a year because I do 99% of my online use on my phone. The kindle has been wonderful for reading in the language I am learning with easy dictionary lookups but without the distractions of notifications. The iPad is more flexible, with a colour screen, so if I was using a device for more than reading, that's the one I would go for. You can get a matte screen protector to cut the glare and protect against fingerprints. It's much more expensive, and would still provide a ton of distractions from reading.

on the ipad you can further reduce the white balance in the accessibility features which reduces the screen brightness in dark rooms a lot. I still think the kindle offers a better reading experience. As you said, it doesn‘t distract me and in very bright areas the screen is just better. The battery life and the price (I would be more sad to loose an ipad over a kindle) simply let me pick the kindle in combination with an ipad pro or ipad air.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite I bought in 2013, it's still running fine. The only time I use the web browser is to check out ebooks at the local library, not ideal but it works, I usually do checkouts with my phone or laptop instead, then get them delivered through Amazon the next time I get to a wifi. I tend to switch back and forth between the Paperwhite and the Kindle app on my phone. For those occasional times I'm not near a power source, there's nothing like the Paperwhite's several weeks long time between charges.

I have a Paperwhite which I use daily, and I have an old Kindle keyboard which still works and lives in my beach bag. That said, I do read on the Kindle app on my iPad (not a mini) for certain things -- comics are terrific on the iPad, as are magazines, and books with lots of images (say a cookbook). If I want a full color experience, I read on the iPad Kindle app. I'm lucky I have the options. I'd recommend the Kindle over the iPad for reading, but if you have both, they each have their strengths.

Use both. For a novel or a non-fiction book where the illustrations are not important or non-existent then for me the Kindle is lighter and less unwieldy. Just. And more comfy. But for a book that has maps or illustrations then the mini is superb. I also think for reading a novel the darker background of the Kindle - reflecting the paper more of a book - is much more comfortable. And it is so handy grabbing the next os a series of books within the App. But then that’s the result of Apple’s wish to take a cut of the book price rather than a criticism of the Mini as a reading device.

I think, having used both, the iPad wins hands down despite the issues you described regarding battery and distraction. however, it's been my experience that unless you are going to read for eight hours straight, battery shouldn't be a major factor. most people I know usually charge their devices almost every night. and, as far as distractions are concern, well, they will occur regardless and if you are dedicated to reading a book you will stay focused as much as the human brain will allow. If you've ever meditated, you know what i mean.In the end your comparison confirmed for me that the iPad mini is superior all around. Thank you for making me feel like I made a good choice. I was worried there for a minute!

@@tahmeedhossain-bc7pz Actually, i own both devices and I still feel the iPad is the more flexible of the two. The battery issue aside, the iPad is quicker in regards to turning pages and it also allows greater flexibility when it comes to appearance. there is one other major issue that causes my "bias," and that is the fact i can listen to a book while i read it with the iPad and i don't need headphones. But thank you for your view. It helps keep me honest in my thoughts. Regards

I have the iPad mini six and a paperwhite (idk wha year but it has a USB-C port). I love both. I mainly read e-books on the paperwhite and books that are PDFs on the iPad mini ( like textbooks and what not) and I use the Apple Books app for that honestly . The size and weight are about the same

Answer this please PDFs have two types. (1) Scanned images pdf (2) Digital or true pdf Digital Pdfs are originally created in MS Word or any similar app and contain editable text which can be copied and highlighted. My question is that can we read true Pdfs in Kindle ? and meanwhile on zooming text remain within screen limits ? I mean that Does the text of true digital Pdfs reflow in Kindle ?

You didn't mention my favorite reason for reading on the iPad mini, something that can't be done on the Kindle devices is audible narration. I buy the ebook and add audible narration. The book gets read to me, it highlights the passage in the book that is being read, and it flips the pages for me. I am able to stay focused, read for longer stretches, and am able to finish more books. The iPad tech makes me happy and therefore reading is a more enjoyable experience.

i have both ipadmini and kindle paperwhite. The point of my reading is for my eyes to take a rest from my mobile screens and laptop from my work .. so reading on my ipad doesn’t give that sense. I have been loving reading on my kindle e-reader ever since I got it, I can hold it whatever is my position , while I am travelling or about to sleep. More importantly, it is really good for my eyes, gived me a feeling of relaxation.

I have both a Kindle Paperwhite and an iPad Mini. If I have to chose only one device to take somewhere I’d take my Mini for functionality. But in terms of reading experience the Kindle wins hands down (unless you are talking about graphic novels). Ppl are sleeping on the difference in weight and ability to hold while laying in different positions. For pure reading and especially night time reading I’ll take the Kindle every time. Especially the new warm light Kindles.

iPad mini for the win if you solely use it as an ereader. If you use it as your sole tablet, pick up a kindle. Sure I like reading next to the pool every now and then but 98% of my reading is done indoors. With battery saver mode on the only app open being kindle, the battery on iPad mini lasts days without a charge.

Great review. For me it comes down to the concept of distractions. I've read books on a Kindle and also on my android tablet ... and it's two different experiences. I can focus way more on what I'm reading when using the Kindle. However, as objects of technology, I do find the Kindle very expensive. Given what technology goes into that thing, they are heavily overpriced.

True, but in the end it kinda saves you a lot of money. 90% of the time ebooks are cheaper than paperbacks, so if you read a lot and normally buy all your books I see a kindle like an investment. So even the device itself is overpriced it pays itself back at the end

Hi I did not hear any mention that Apple has its own book app and book store. That is likely the reason for not being able to purchase books on the iOS Kindle app. Also, I don't think there was any mention that the iPad mini has a very high quality colour screen which is better than the Kindle for comic books/manga, visual novels , art , nature and cookbooks. I am a new iPad mini user and I have a Paperwhite as well. Now I find that I dont even pick up my Kindle and I use the iPad for all my reading and I play Apple Music for Reading playlist at the same time. I even take it to the gym and read while doing cardio and I turn on Apple Music for Cardio playlist to block out the gym noise.

Please note that you can turn off page refresh from every page turn to periodically. Not a problem for me. Also, when reading a book there is zero slow down when turning the pages. Also, battery life MUCH better on the Kindle. I own both, and each excels at what they do. I've had various Kindles over the last decade. kindle is a much better reading experience, less strain on eyes, less distraction. However, where an iPad mini maybe better is that I can also use apps such as Everand for reading subscriptions, Magzter magazines and goodnotes for journaling. But I would still just get the kindle for reading. I have the Ipad 11 inch which works as my primary device for content consumption, art and other things

Something I would like to add in favour for the iPad and that is screenshots? When I read book that I like to extract points of information from we have the ability to screenshot that piece of text from the book and make up own notes eg you might want to refer to it in a school assignment, I am not at school, far from it. Yes you could say, oh but what about copyright and yes that is true and then I not going to sell that information or text so I don’t let that bother me. The kindle is great, but for me the iPad wins hands down. My biggest challenge is to get my wife in the same mindset and get her to become more digital.

Amazon revolutionized the publishing industry and the Kindle was originally a WHOPPING $379! It does need better pen support like handwritten notations in 2022. Nobody and I mean nobody does replicating the experience of reading (and studying on) a book better than Kindle.

The Paperwhite Signature is great to have stashed in your bag or purse because it has such a great standby charge duration. If you find yourself in a waiting room or something, it’s nice to have access to your library. And it will be charged and available. You can but you will need to convert them to MOBI/AZW3 format by using one of many available free converters. By the way the Amazon annonced that they are going to start support ePub downloading in late 2022. This means you'll be able to send EPUB files to your Kindle via Amazon's Send to Kindle system, which essentially lets you upload documents to your Kindle by emailing them to your Kindle email address. It's unclear, however, whether Kindles will natively support EPUB files.
