I've always sharpened knives by the blade going in "circles". This pulls and pushes the edge on the stone at the same time. This works especially well when using small stones - IMO. With rods, I do both directions; depending on size of blade and rod. I've seen "pros" and Chefs cut toward the stone. As long as the blade will shave, it's all good. Stropping - You MUST pull the edge away from the leather or you WILL cut the leather; now you have a divot. Thanks for posting; looks like a viable tool option.

The old timers (people, not knives) I watched sharpen knives as a kid always sharpened with the edge trailing against the stone and that is the method I learned. Then I got older and begin to hear about sharpening a knife with the edge leading. In fact, even some stones/sharpeners I have bought describe the method as being 'as if you are trying to slice a thin piece off the top of the stone.' I thought I might have learned the wrong way but found that, for me, the edge trailing method usually worked better. I have since found that it depends on the individual knife - most knives sharpen up just fine using my original 'edge trailing' method but there are a few knives I just could not seem to get really sharp (hair popping to shaving sharp) using that method but which sharpen up easily using the 'edge leading' method both on stones and the old Schrade flat steel I inherited from my Grandfather. The only universal is that when it is time to strop on leather I always use the 'edge trailing' method.

Do you ever sleep brother, I know it takes a lot of time and effort to do all these videos. As a rookie I get so much out of these videos and I’m SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY I found your channel. This is definitely one of my top 3 KZbin channels and I have a lot of favorite channels saved!! Thanks again Tim for all you do and taking time to do this!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

No, I was born in Boston, grew up in Los Angeles and now living in Michigan. But as soon as my twins graduate high school next year I’m moving back to California where my family lives. I still love going back to Boston and visiting.....I’m a die hard sports fan so I love my New England teams😊

That transformin is very practical. The only thing that I would like to see would be a ceramic rod with a modified diamond rod that would have just a portion of the tip for serrations. This would be an awesome system.

I like both those knife sharpeners, they both seem to have pros and cons. Like you said, it would be more difficult to sharpen a blade with a lot of curves and groves with the flat stone. I really like them both and for the price I might just pick them both up😁😁

I bought them both as well.( I got the flat one without the sheath) a lot cheaper than with, and I'm a leather Smith so will make my own. I got these for mainly scissors and garden tools and the rod combo for serrated knives, beak nosed knives and jackknives. It's a great camping tool, very compact with a pouch. I've used the flat on scissors and will just pass this on for y'all. The 1200 grit side is still a very rough edge on the blades. I used a ceramic rod then a leather strop with green compound loaded. These two steps now have the blade a nicely polished smooth edge that sliced thru paper very nicely and shaved hair off my arm! Overall in a pinch it will sharpen a blade, but carry a steel rod with you or even a short of broken ceramic rod if you can and the leather strop. Tandys leather carries nice veggie tanned leather, scrap pieces are usually very cheap to make good strops.

So... I just profiled a Khukri that my buddy had from India. It was pretty garbage edge, flat on a few spot a few mm thick... it was an interesting challenge. I used a semi-round bastard file to get the edge shaped. Then zoned in a little bit more with my Spyderco triangle diamond rods, the corners were extremely helpful for working the inside curve. Proceeded through the rough and fine (didn’t get it nice enough that the extra fine rods seemed worth while). Got it paper slicing sharp, which was surprising, given how it started. In general though, I started using Shapton Glass stones. They are remarkable. For field use though, I have a pocket medium and fine grit Arkansas stone in my sheath pouch. Also carry a puck for the axe, though, I’ll prly get rid of it. The stones do fine...

Love my coarse DMT stone and large black spyderco stone but like u for recurved blades I use a no name coarse diamond rod and my Falkniven ceramic rod.

Nice! Looks like a solid choice for a budget sharpener that covers alot of bases. The included strop is a cool touch

I use a knives plus strop block and always pull back and away. You want to operate the strop at a slightly steeper angle than you would use for your stone.
@mickkeim41425 жыл бұрын
They both look like a great portable in the field kind of sharpeners...I think the buddy strop might work best if you remove the sharpener out which would allow the leather strop to lay a bit flatter. Not having on...I can’t say that for sure, but it would make sense. Either however look like a good value.

For convex and scandy grinds I use flat one, for flat and hallow grinds rods do faster.

Puma Tec is not a company. It's the line of cheaply produced knives (mostly in China) that are rebranded by the German Puma company. They also have a middle-of-the road line, called Puma IP which is produced by Spanish makers for Puma. Only the knives that are branded as simply "Puma" without anything added are produced in Germany.

I made a strop sheath for a small diamond and stone sharpener. I don't really see the need for the handle. I prefer the rod much easier.
@manuellucero84145 жыл бұрын
To sharpen it can be done in any of the directions, I personally go with the edge towards the stone as if I wanted to cut a very thin slice of it. For strop, pull the knife towards you with the edge pointing towards the leather so as not to damage the leather

I LOVE that Kukri knife, I’m looking in the description and I don’t see it, am I just blind or is it not there....lol. Can you tell me who makes that Kukri and what model it is? Thanks Tim👍

Get some pink jewelers rouge and run it into the leather for a super fine finished edge. And remove the sharpener from the leather while stropping. The flatter the leather, the better the edge.

Out in the field you can use clay from the near the water as a stropping compound

It makes no difference which was you move the blade on a stone, but always trail the edge on a strop so you don’t cut the leather. Personally, I prefer to push the edge into the stone when I sharpen because I find it easier to feel and hear when I have my angle right that way.

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would believe it's a good idea to pull a blade toward you when holding on to something. I'm looking for a good field sharpener that's portable and this seems to be the ticket.
