This is the most fantastic scrapyard I have ever seen! I would like to see him model some steam loco scrapping with some cut boiler tubes and wheels etc. However, this is a specialist yard and outside his modern image period, so as ever, he was right to cover the chaotic car yard more likely to be seen next to a 70s or 80s lineside. Some people don't appreciate that Richard is probably the highest IQ and most accurate modeller out there!

It's my favourite layout, the one closes to what I would build if I had the time, money, space and skills to do so but I did see another one which I initially didn't realise was a model railway so I guess that one was the most realistic one I've seen (can't say I remember what one it was though!)

I work in a large scrapyard - your one is spot on. Despite the fact that Health and Safety has increased, there are still areas of the yard where I work, that look like your miniature. Tyres, white goods, oversized chunks of metal, piles of chain link and Harris fencing, all lurk in corners of my workplace. A common sight also, are heaps of car engines, destined to be run through the frag mill. Cable drums, too, and old farm machinery. Railway track. Tons of the spring clips used to fix rail to sleepers. Scaffolding poles, in various lengths, rusting chains of all sizes. The sort of job in which you'll see something you've never seen before, every day. Yes, really. I love your yard and your eye for detail. I can state, in all honesty, yes, yes there are places that look like that, and just out of sight, there is a shear, a pre-shredder, a sorted metals shed, and a frag mill. Thank you. 👍👍👍

I remembee going to a yard with my dad when I was about 5, with all the stacked-up brown 70's cars! There was a yard in Mildenhall around 2006 that still let people wander in and out to find what they could find. We wanted a back seat for a Mini, but there was an XJ-S nearby and I got the crazy idea of trying to cram those seats into a Mini. Neither happened, in the end!

As someone who worked in the motor trade and spent a lot of time in and around this type of premises, I can say with confidence that you have nailed it, spot on. 70s to early 90s before they changed to the more clinical "safer" car dismantling yards. I have no interest in model railways apart from viewing them on youtube if I stumble across on them, like I have with this one. I just felt I had to comment as it brought back many memories.

The level of detail really reflects 1980s Britain, a scrapyard like that would have been in every town and city and I distinctly remember seeing cars stacked on top of one another on the various trips to scrapyards with my dad in search for a part for the second hand cars that he used to buy and they were always somewhere near the railway, fantastic!

Love watching the progress on the layout,so realistic. Some detail ideas for the scrapyard. Normally scrap is paid on weight. A vehicle weighbridge would be near the office, also a free standing weigher for smaller items. You could use the old i beams as a pile of scrap metal along maybe with an area of cable ready to be stripped. Scallywags used to nick it off building sites and scrapped no questions asked back in the day lol Any way just thinking out loud, keep up the great work👍

Would also lend itself to 2 shabby lights opposite ends of weighbridge and on opposing sides. How about dog kennels with warning guard dogs sign Just ideas

Nicking cables is still common today, there's an urbex video in the abandoned high-tech HQ of a defunct F1 team, and you can see along all the ceilings and down the walls where the wiring's been pulled out.

back in 1980ish, I brought an 18-month-old Rover SD1 2600, and an engine liner slipped wrecking the complete engine. Cos the the car has 25k on the clock Rover washed their hands of the trouble. After a search, I located an engine in a local scrap yard and I can confirm your model is pretty representative. Come at 2 o'clock the man said 'hold on a minute I have to load these two cars onto this lorry' and underneath them was my engine. IT was pulled out of the mud and a lot of brown stuff came out of it. Got it home cleaned it up and measured the crank bores etc and it measured up bang on nominal.

Or the Rover V8’s they were about fifty we quid bought loads and converted series landrovers with them .now them engines are a small fortune to buy.loved scrap yards back then when you could root around and find anything you wanted .great job on the scene 👍👍

I really enjoyed this work, i spent a lot of time in Car breakers back in the 70/80's and this is exactly how i remember them, the mud, and puddles, are bang on !! a couple of burnt out wrecks should also be included, also a couple of REALLY old cars as in 40/50's covered in green algae and dirt, should be at the bottom of the pile, with more modern, stuff teetering on top, my local breakers had 3 cars on top of each other, very dangerous stuff!!

The scrapyard was the first video i saw and i cant believe how long ago it was. This revamp has really done it some more justice. I remember the scrapyards my Dad took me to in the late 70's and 80's always had nettle jungles enveloping the forgotten cars hidden around the back end of the lot. I used to forage in there for makers badges from motors i thought were a hundred years old. I wish i still had them.

Hi Richard, in the 70s 80s I was a crane operator (22RB with an electro magnet) in a scrap yard and believe me was.not as tidy as your depiction. As customers came in with their trucks and tipped off I would stack the scrap onto a huge pile for sorting. Dirtiest job I've ever done. As modellers we do our best and you have done exceptionally well, keep up the good work. Regards John

So great to see the next instalment, i used to drive class 415/416 1951 epb units over the Atlantic Lines to Victoria and going past Brixton there was a junk yard to the left, so much like yours. Also its hard to forget the actual scale, as so realistic, until the "Arm of God" appeared. As usual the attention to even, unseen details, that having watched previous videos of yours we all know and appreciate being there make it all the better. Absolutely brilliant. I personally reckon this is the best layout in recent years. I wonder how you ever have any time to do your real work, in the full scale world. More please.

So as I see the fascia boards, I am imagining them as a cross section of the ground beneath the scene. It would be fun to paint them as layers of the soil and rocks or whatever would be below. You could have some utility pipes or something visible in a few places. You could even do some fun stuff like show skeletons, or fossils!!! You could make a hole in the fascia board and make a scene like a tomb of some sort with grave goods and such. I know I am getting loopy now, but its late here right now! Cheers! 😉👍
