Researchers have found water vapour in the disc around a young star exactly where planets may be forming. Water is a key ingredient for life on Earth, and is also thought to play a significant role in planet formation. Yet, until now, we had never been able to map how water is distributed in a stable, cool disc - the type of disc that offers the most favourable conditions for planets to form around stars. The new findings were made possible thanks to the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner. This video summarises the discovery.

It kinda makes sense that after gravity, water/ice is the next fundamental glue of space.

Imagine in billions of years that planet gets oceans and then life, intelligent life. And then they find this planet and find out eons ago intelligent life was here

Incrível ...se o cientista fica incrédulo com esta descoberta...a nossa reacção é de total espanto e deslumbramento com esta estrela e do que pode vir acontecer ...a formação de um ou mais planetas?!? É mais um espanto...

Would there be a region of the disc where organic chemistry is possible?

Indeed, organic chemistry does happen in protoplanetary discs like this one. Organic molecules have been detected in many protoplanetary discs, and different molecules are often found at different distances from the host star. There are a lot of ongoing efforts, both observational and theoretical, to understand the chemical processes that take place in these environments.

There are examples - supported by lab experiments - showing that chemistry can even form simple amino acids or lipid pregenitors.
