Great stuff as always. Question / Content suggestion - for those of us who have older portable solar generators and are looking for additional capacity, can you come up with a way where we could interface a battery such as this one to the existing system? Perhaps where you could plug this battery in the solar generator 12v or 120 AC output to charge, and have a small inverter from this to plug the main system into to charge it. I hate to throw away the older, obsolescent, but still functional system until I've worn it out, which likely won't be for 5-10 years.

I went with the cheaper 12v 100Ah regular batteries, not the trolling motor ones. I live in the south so don't need low temp charging protection. I did add a Amped Outdoors smart shunt for $60. When using them for trolling batteries it's good to know your drain and SOC, especially if you are fishing a multi day tournament without the ability to fully charge between days. So, $80 to have it integrated isn't really a bad deal.

The “don’t use lithium as a starter battery” has always been about temperature. Gets too hot in most engine bays to the point where degradation is significant in short periods of time. A123 cells, cylindrical and pouch, have been used by some car manufacturers. You don’t need something with such crazy high C rate though. Your average prismatic cell can burst 3C-5C for a few seconds.

Buy a DC to DC converter. I have the Renogy 40 amp DC-DC charge unit in my van. This is the one without the solar input. It charges a 300 amp hour lithium battery with 2000 watt inverter. It needs a separate wire to any car circuit that turns on when the key is on, otherwise it will drain the car starting battery with the engine off. My ignition sensing wire goes to the windshield wiper circuit, easily accessible. The DC-DC unit has another small terminal that will cut the charge output current in half when its energized. I installed a 3 way dashboard switch, up gives a full 40 amps charge, neutral is off, and down on the switch gives 20 amps to the lithium battery. This comes in handy when the headlights are on, heater is on, and windshield wipers are going. At a stop light, all of this overloads my 105 amp alternator and the voltage drops to 11.5 volts. I switch to low charge, 20 amps, and the engine alternator will be at 12.8 volts at idle. Other Renogy DC-DC charge units come in 20/10 amp, 40/20 amp, and 60/30 amp sizes. There are dip switches on the Renogy DC-DC charging unit to set battery type. The current into the lithium battery will reduce itself until the battery is at 100% charge. Then it cuts off charge current to the lithium battery automatically. I also have solar panels and opted to have a separate MPPT solar controller. The new combination DC-DC charge units don't put the full output to the battery. They share solar/alternator output. They also can't handle more than 24 volts solar input. My panels put out 96 volts. I hope this helps.

Apparently heat is the issue; if you can keep the battery around ambient it may work OK. I used those little motorcycle lifepo4 batteries (e.g. btl14a240c) as starters for my 2.3L sedan in SoCal (warm climate), but both the first and second one failed after about a year, possibly due to being run down or overcharged (the BMS was exceedingly primitive, appearing to only do balancing). The cells were all puffed out when I disassembled them.

My minis only go up to 13.8V with a 10A charger attached. So very likely that there is a balancing issue but I pulled 105Ah out of both so it’s not so bad that I’m missing out on capacity. You probably have a similar balance issue. If one cell is hitting 3.75V and the rest are at 3.45V then you’re getting nearly 100% capacity from those 3 “low” cells. Might be missing out on 5%

When running these batteries in series, do you need to worry about balancing them, or can you just charge them to full charge before hooking them up in series, and be good? And if you do use a balancer, and I undestand balancing LiFePO4 batteries correctly, the balancer should not be left connected all the time, but only a couple times a year, or if batteries are drawn down to near empty? Talking about a trolling motor application, so the batteries will get a full charge after every use. Thank you!

And if you don’t know try both but if your in dc and it’s AC the 60 hearts cycling is prob why it bounces like that. Capacitors in the inverter can hold a large amount of energy for a while to so even if no incoming there still may be outgoing if not load to drain the cap.

Hey Will -- have you tested out the LITIME 280AH battery yet ? Seriously thinking of getting it but I can't seem to find that one on your videos

what life battery would you recommend for a jeep running a 24v 60watt panel a PWS charger and running a 12v fridge? Also am I better off running a 12v fridge or an inverter and a 110v fridge? I can upgrade the panel to 100w and should I change the PWS charger to MPPT and if so which one? Im on a budget so please advise for the least expensive. I will not be using it all the time. The battery will live in the jeep and it does get hot in there should I put a disconnect of some kind on the battery or waste of time? I have a small inverter now but only for really light loads like a air pump or emergency I dont really use it. (its 100w) You are the only channel I have found that actually knows what youre talking about. Sorry lots of questions LOL

I’ve followed you for about five years now and my solar works great thanks to your advice. However, my epever Tracer BN series button has just started tripping out on my 12 volt circuit but it doesn’t affect my 3K inverter? I’ve got 2 x panels and 3 batteries all good. Any ideas? And thanks for all the great videos and advice.

Need your help. Using Victron equipment am I able to use two LiTime 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries with two SOK 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries? Your wiring diagrams are the best.

What's the difference from this battery and the new trolling motor battery other than the size of the case? All the specs are identical

I'd spend the extra money for the Bluetooth - it monitors the battery power - well worth the extra money

I'm thinking about trying a 50 or 100ah litime for car subwoofer audio system build. Curious how well these would help

Just this morning I ran across a new to me battery. Called a - PUPVWMHB - that LOOKS to have good specs. I Have bought your recommendations before, and my fellow boat club guys watch what I get. I'm pretty careful to advise on these, so can you do a test on this, or did I miss a previous test?? Thanks, Cal

Hey, Will! Any idea what happen to Li Time 400 and 460 batteries? I don't see them on Amazon or on their website. Just thought you might have info on this.

@WillProwse Question: I have a stack of 6 EG4 batteries BMS communicating with my growatt 12K inverter. Theoretically, shouldn’t I be able to attach more LiFePo4 batteries in parallel without them being connected to the RS485 comms? I have found a different brand of rack mount batteries at a better price but they lack any wired comms. I understand the accuracy of the SoC may be affected but the internal BMS of the batteries control the flow of current and maintains safe conditions, correct? Buying matching batteries at the same time is always ideal but building on a budget is sometimes necessary. Thanks for your time!

Quick question. After you open the batteries up.can you safety put them back into a new case? Ie. Plano boxes?

Would you use a battery like this on a small boat? My main fear with the lithium batteries is a fire/explosion with water exposure. Would you be concerned about this? Are some brands safer (in this regard) than others? Thank you

What about Eco worthy lifepo batteries? Do you ever try them? I been running then on my home and been very happy , they run my home 95% with the rest of the solar system.

I have a 50 HP Yamaha 4 Stroke Outboard with an alternator. The starter requires less than 285 CCA. I realize LiTime offers a 12v 20ah Start Battery with 650cca, but wouldn't a group 24 or 31 be a better battery in the long run? I plan to use 120v shore power to a Lithium charger keep it charged up. Is the issue the Outboard Alternator? My friend that works on RV's recommends that I use a group 31 led acid and not use Lithium LiFePO4 at all.
