Unboxing and reviewing the new Hornby Class 43 HSTs with buffers fitted, numbers 43123 and 43065 'City of Edinburgh' (R3944). I then run the locos around the layout just by themselves and then hauling a rake of Mk. 3 coaches.

One thing to follow-up on here is that I mentioned the loco had some issues hauling the rake of coaches on some curves. The back-to-back gauge on the unpowered car was actually pretty tight. After adjusting the wheels, it now runs much smoother and without problems. Worth checking the back-to-back gauge if you have problems.

That is useful information, thanks Iain. My Hornby INTERCITY livery HST does struggle slightly with a rake of Mk3s (whereas the Bachmann 90 manages them easily, even propelling with a DVT) so I will check the b-t-b's on the dummy car. Thanks for the tip. Vivian

You're welcome. I was checking performance by adding one coach at a time until I got to the point where it struggled, thinking it was the drag of coaches. Wasn't until I added the DVT it had problems. Adjusting the back-to-back gauge seems to have resolved it. I don't remember if I'd done the coaches when I got them 18 months ago. Iain

Hi, great review and unboxing, I have this same hst set, it was the second I bought after my NMT set which I love, this is a great looking set that has pride and place in my collection, the new 21 pin Railadventure hst set has the buffers fitted as well which make it look so much better in my opinion, thanks for sharing.

Good review. My train pack from Hattons also arrived this week. Looks great. Haven't been able to run it yet so it was good to see it running on your layout. Cheers, George

Thanks, George. They're great looking locos. Detailing pieces are a bit fiddly, but add to the look. Hope you get to run yours soon and enjoy them! Iain

Thanks! Hornby definitely did a good job with it. Helps I'm a sucker for the Swallow livery! Bit pricey compared to the DCC sound equipped locos, but it is what it is. Iain

Beautiful models. It's such a shame to see the HST sets slowly being phased out, on the big railway. They've certainly given us sterling service. Thanks again Iain.

Yes, I was sad to them go. But, they certainly provided a lot of service over the years. I was glad I got to ride them one last time on my last visit back to England, and I'm looking forward to riding on an Azuma. Iain

@@NewcastleCentralOOGauge HSTs are still in service with 3 TOCs. CrossCountry (long sets), GWR and ScotRail both operate short sets, which Hornby have also modeled.

You can also use the dummy one with the new Class 91 from Hornby, they used them because DVTs & Mk4 coaches werent ready for testing on the ECML
@NewcastleCentralOOGauge3 жыл бұрын
Good to know, thanks. I do have the Class 91 on pre-order from last year, and the DVT they just announced. I did wonder if this could have paired up. Iain

The Class 43 version with buffers looks ugly the one without buffers is much much better
