So what I understand, is that for a newcomer to Logos you're not only paying the subscription fee but you have to pay a hefty price to have access to the books, and only the ones you bought. No one is mentioning this in in their reviews.

You don't pay for the books you already own. You only pay for ones you dont own. If your subscription comes with books you own, you don't get credit for them, so I guess in that sense you could argue that you pay for them again, but I wouldn't call it a hefty price, particularly given you get other books with it that you dont own. I hope that helps!

Hey Darryl, thank you for this review, very informative. Like to ask you.. what happened to those Gold, platnium package that we buy & keep? When you said Logos is switching to this "Subscription" model, does it mean that those Gold packages are no longer available but only by subscription model? Please explain to me again.

😇Thanks Daryl. One observation-when you upgrade to a higher subscription tier your two years for the better features restart on the date that you upgrade.

That might be true, but it includes the lower tier features, which I expect you'd still keep if you left after 2 years. So the 2 year reset probably only applies to the new features.

I started my journey in Logos with the L10 Academic Pro library. I built this up with selected legacy library purchases which helped to round out my library. This culminated in L10 Standard Gold. I enjoyed the early access pro prior to being converted to 2025 Pro. I am considering the Max subscription as it offers me some heavy hitter commentary sets I could not otherwise afford to purchase. I am hoping that in the intermediate term Logos will flesh out Max to include more features. As far as 2025 libraries I am considering silver std or preacher as the resources will build on what I have. Dynamic pricing and 30% off makes them even more attractive. So, this is just another view on your thoughts.

What frustrates me is that it doesn't actually save money over time, though this is the argument Logos keeps making. First, if up front costs were a problem, they already had a payment plan... which is just a subscription but you actually own something at the end. Second, the math doesn't work. I spent $800 and own the full feature upgrade. I don't see a need to upgrade again any time soon but let's say this lasts me 5 years, then I spend an other $800 which should last me another 5 years. That's $1,600 for potentially 10 years of full features. At $30 / month for all of the features, that's $1,800 (360 a year x 5 years) in half of the possible use time.

@@Cysansone yeah. I just figure I don’t want/need the AI. I figure there is going to be heavy marketing of new features each time one comes out-to entice us to subscribe. My plan currently is to tune out all the logos marketing after this. Just buy the books I want or need.

If you already have Logos 10 then your annual subscription price would be $129. Over 5 years, that is $645 - so cheaper than $800 every five years and doesn't require a large outlay of cash, and you get all the features as they are rolled out. If you don't have Logos 10, then it is (worst case) $199/year, which means you would pay your $800 every 4 years. But all this assumes you buy the Max subscription. If you don't need the extra AI credits, just get the Pro subscription. Worst case, that will cost you $15/month or $900 over 5 years. If you've already got logos 10 then it's only $9.99/month or $600 over 5 years. Pay annually, and you'll save even more ($500 over 5 years). In short, its probably cheaper to buy the subscription and get the features as they're released rather than buy them once every 5 years, especially if you're already up to date.

I am a logos user where I have the legacy type for the full features (Silver) and the Bronze doctrine (Baptist). For the last two years I have only upgraded the legacy to ensure I had all new features of the software, I am working on getting my doctrine upgraded. I am also a subscriber to the new which will be distributed tomorrow October 21, 2024 (I have been a part of the subscription since it was first offered). I like the idea of the subscription thus far and will see what the actual lay of the land will be tomorrow for the full subscrition (I have the Pro version which I think will high enough). I like the idea as I understand it at this point. Tomorrow will cement it or turn into a jackhammer. Thank you for your view. 😀😀

I have just bought Logos 10 while I could still get it under the old system, because I wasn't keen on the prospect of the subscription model - I don't do sermons and am never likely to, and I already have Accordance anyway. However, Logos has some books that Accordance doesn't have, so if I want to add any books to my Logos library, will it still be possible to buy books without having to switch to a subscription, or will people be forced to make the switch in order to make additions to their existing library?

Good question. I believe you'll be able to continue to build a library without a subscription. The subscription provides software features beyond the base library/reader/search functions.

Do any of the resources that come with the subscription have the option to eventually own them? For example the pro subscription comes with 157 commentaries.

😇 Does the AI help with searches. Instead of having to use a complicated search procedure, will the AI search help me for example find all uses of ἀγαπαω in the GNT and LXX, show me the instances in the Greek text and then allow me to see differences in usage?

I think they said the discounts should be ongoing, not just the first 2 years. They did mention if there are price increases, the discounted ones will go up to, but that that it should remain discounted from normal.

Yes, I believe you'll always pay a discounted amount, but I expect prices will increase over time.

Biggest issue for me is that you need an internet connection to use Logos features, except Notes/highlights on resources you’ve downloaded and paid for. Which means no connection no workie with Logos.

Given you can only download resources you've purchased (and they download automatically) I don't think this is that bit a problem. I have been offline plenty of times and never had a problem using it. It just syncs next time you're online. You're not thinking of the web based version are you?

@ No, the non subscription model. I lost internet connection and the Tools features wouldn’t work ie Passage Guide, Word Study etc. I got an ‘internet connection required’ message when trying to use. I wasn’t sure if this was because I have the basic Logos 10 so queried with Logos, who came back and informed me I needed internet to connect to features.

Thanks! I found out that the trial basically doubles your default trial period. That means if you own Logos 10 you get 15 days (I think) and it doubles it to 30 days. If you don't have Logos 10 then it doubles your trial period from 30 days to 60 days. I hope that helps!

😇 I think I am cautiously optomistic. I am not a huge fan of subscription based anything, especially software. I think it shifts too much away from actual ownership of a product. I also don't see the need for AI personally, so there is no real excitement to upgrade. I just hope if they add other features it can still be a standalone purchase like it is now.

I am at the end of my ministry in churches, but still like to do in-depth study. I do not intend to upgrade from version 10 platinum. The idea of IA helping me do study doesn't resonate with me. I admit to using AI for some things, but sermon presentation isn't one of them. Maybe when I bequeath my LOGOS library to a new pastor, that person might find the help helpful. I will hold off until that person finds it helpful.

I'm a L10 user (gold). Just don't understand why I would want the subscription. I really don't. Seems like a lot is based on the AI so, if I am not interested in the AI then is there any benefit?

There are some new interface changes with the subscription version, and as they add new features to the software you won't get them. You'll still get bug fixes though, and your library won't change. There is no pressure to switch, so if you don't feel it's compelling, wait until it is!

I have LOGOS 10 gold; trying the $6.99 subscription. Love all the commentaries I have access to. AI tools: There are dozens of tools I use for free, I am not sure if LOGOS AI is worth the extra money. IMO

Darryl, I have Logos 9 base package with all Logos 9 features, there are now great discounts of Logos 10. What happens if I subscribe having my Logos 9 ? What features I get or will I be without those AI features?

Logos 9 users will be able to upgrade for a discounted price (not as much of a discount as those with Logos 10 but better than not having Logos at all). If you subscribe, you'll get all the Logos 10 features plus the AI features for your subscription level.

So do the subscriptions come with a base set of Bibles for free or included with the subscription? I had to buy all the Bible’s I have with my logos, although some became available later for free access. Would some starting with a free subscription have Bibles for free? Which ones. Then with the Premium vs Pro vs Max subscriptions?

There is a base library included with each subscription. just over 250 books with the Premium subscription, 500 with the the Pro subscription, and 600 (at this stage, to my knowledge) with the Max subscription.

How will they handle families (husband and wife), will both need their own subscription? Most subscriptions services cover family members, like up to 5 members.

@@bma Thank you for the update. most likely then will be stay on free plan at least for one of us. I found Accordance formatting problematic and Life Bible’s features lacking. Crossway’s ESV Bible plan does provide the commentaries so I would probably supplement with that.

I bought just the feature upgrades when they were on special offer as I didn't want additional books I currently own the Logos 10 Full feature upgrade. Unless there is a specific new feature that is worth 9.99 a month, then I can't see any point in subscribing. I don't currently see how paying 9.99 a month is going to save me money, especially as I don't know what features may or may not be added, and I don't know if I even need them or would use them. I may just be giving money away for additional features that I don't need.

Sorry if I did. That's not what will happen. If you own Logos 10 now, you'll keep those. If you stay on the subscription for 2 years you also keep the new features that you acquire while on the subscription.

I also have Accordance. I like it, but think their Windows version has a long way to go. For instance, when researching a Hebrew word and right-clicking to look it up in a lexicon, it often takes me to the wrong entry! They definitely need to tighten that up.

Neither is perfect. The complete vaporware of Accordance Web has frustrated me as an example. I use both for different features and reasons.

@@BoneyWhy Yeah, it's definitely a smoother experience on MacOS. I also prefer print books so really only use Accordance for deep interaction with the biblical text. I imagine if I were more into ebooks I would prefer Logos.

Disagree. I have both, with many resources on each platform. In my opinion, Accordance just can't compete with Logos; Logos outshines it at almost every turn. Accordance created a mess with the release of V. 14 and are just way too slow at improving the software, not to mention adding resources to their relatively small library.

It feels dishonest hearing you say that you are not paid by Logos for making this video, suggesting you are not an affiliate. Logos does reward you for making this video and you'll generate revenue from your affiliate link at the end, which you don't say is an affiliate link. Yeah, I'll pass. Never been a subscription kind of guy. I consider it fleecing. You can only upgrade the software for so long. So you will end up paying more over the long duration. There are cheaper ways to study Gods word. Good old fashion prayer with the Author, a concordance, bible dictionary and a greek lexicon would work better for very little investment.

I don't think that will be your experience. The AI "tokens" are pretty liberally given and I doubt you'll max them out unless you're using them constantly throughout every day, which is highly unlikely at this stage.

Yeah hoping it doesnt become like bloggers who supposedly blog but never actually write anything themselves..... Sermons, notes etc need to be done personally by the preacher.. otherwise we might as well start a church, call ot chatgpt, stick a laptop up front and let it do all the work....

AI is helpful for ideas, but at this stage, it wont write your entire sermon, just save you time along the way.
