I don’t mind that they claim Shadow’s main motivation is to fulfill Maria’s wish of protecting the planet since I think that has always been at least partially his motivation ever since he remembered who Maria is. In fact, I say Shadow’s bio is pretty accurate. The only issue I have with it is when he claims that Shadow doesn’t really care about humanity, and only protects them because of Maria’s wish. The implication of that is that Shadow is heartless, which I would have to disagree with. As we’ve seen in sonic heroes when Shadow has absolutely no memory, he saves a Rouge just because he believes that’s the right thing to do, showing that just by nature, he’s a good person. I want to say, shadow was as fond of humanity. Is someone like sonic is, but to say he doesn’t care about them at all just feels a bit odd. But that’s nothing I can’t work around as a fan. It’s not something blatantly inconsistent with the canon like if they said “Shadow only cares about beating Sonic” or something ridiculous like that. But if what Ian Flynn said about shadows, bio is leading into something new about the character, I’m all here for it. It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen something interesting done with him outside of just being cool fan service.

It's great that we're getting answers on why all of these certain things are canon or why Shadow is motivated by Maria, when he moved on from her at the end of Shadow '05. I'm very curious on how this all will tie into each other and make more sense because there's been plenty of backlash for the decision to make a unified canon/timeline. One thing I do like is that if they use a character from IDW, there will be an introduction for them, instead of us expecting to know who she is when some fans, including me, don't read the comics. After all, reading comics to get caught up on what's happening in the games shouldn't be forced onto fans who want to know. I think references are fine, but going beyond that might be very hard to do, as Ian said. I can't wait to see what they do with Shadow, and what kind of future he'll have. With the release of Sonic Movie 3, Shadow will grow in popularity causing more demand for him to be in games, and I think they can capitalize on this opportunity. Alas, I'm awaiting the future of this franchise to see how all of this stuff that seems to not be canon is canon.

I like this, It means events like the Metal Virus and The Starline/Eggman Conflict and Scrapnik Island happened. I love the bios and how they explain how Silver can travel between timelines and Team Dark's dynamic and that Sonic Prime happened. Until Ian Flynn tells us when it takes place, I head canon it as after Sonic Lost World and Before Sonic Forces, due to Knuckles spending time away from Angel Island to help Sonic and the others.

Even outside of the shows and comics, what's been considered cannon and what's continuity have been weird. And as good as Generations and Mania were, those two games didn't really help the cause lol. Still, this is very interesting in a way. It would be amazing if they could bring in the IDW characters to the games especually hinting at them in Frontiers. As far as Shadow goes, not much to really say, it's just breadcrumbs for now but here's hoping to some fascinating stuff

It was just a circumstance of bad communication, the team was just kinda doing their own thing and SEGA hired Ian Flynn and the others to try to advise the crew on how to keep the show consistent and in universe but the crew just kinda didn't listen fully, Ian and the others did as much as they could

I hope people do think that this is just the way for the Sonic canon to be as polished and explainable lore as possible and not a divine grace that will fix the mess of Sonic the Hedgehog lore. Sonic is fun because the lore can be messy and allowed to do stuff out of nowhere as long as it's fun and cool.

Sonic having shorter quills reminiscent of his Meta Era design and not the longer ones he had back at the Adventure Era, Amy and Tails sounding more like their late Meta Era selves than their early Adventure Era selves. In my opinion, Prime fits best right before Lost World. It has the tone and atmosphere of that time (dumb and childish but not completely devoid of stakes and attempts of meaningful moments), what happened (and will happen) to Nine could enhance the fact that Sonic seems oddly overprotective of Tails in that game and it doesn't fit after Forces at all. In the IDW comics, right after Forces the gang continue helping the world rid of Eggman's presence for a month, Amy forms the Restoration and the rest of the series happens back-to-back (or at least very close to each other, not leaving much room for anything else in-between). Team Sonic Racing probably happened before Forces and then Frontiers is tonally a completely different beast from Prime so ain't no way these 2 things are close to each other timeline wise. So yeah, gotta be after Generations, gotta be before Forces, I think the answer is clear, either before or after Lost World and imo before Lost World is the way to go.

Miles Nine Prower is cannon. My theory was the reason the next Sonic game, Sonic Superstars, featured classic characters was because the next time we see modern Sonic characters in a game is they're gonna be very different from what we knew due to changes made in Prime. The different character variants in Prime are experiments on which direction they plan to take the modern characters.

I understand why people hate Sonic Prime that Sonic Prime is canon because it’s confusing we’re Sonic Prime take place in the Sonic timeline and Sonic Prime is Canon to the Main series. I definitely don’t think that IDW is the future of Sonic The hedgehog because IDW definitely does not feel like the future of Sonic The Hedgehog. We are going to put the entire story of Sonic Prime together after Sonic Prime Season 3. I can definitely see people that don’t want Sonic Prime Canon to the Main Series. It's clear that Prime was never initially meant to be canon. Like you can't tell me that the Sonic in Sonic Prime is the same Sonic from Black Knight or Frontiers. My biggest worry for making everything canon is that it ruins their potential to do anything interesting, they can't make any major changes otherwise it would make it harder to translate into the game's story. The characters have to be the same ending with the last game and throughout every non-game story up until the next game comes out.

Sonic Lore and figuring out what is and what is not cannon is a massive mess. Some stuff does tie together but other things will forever be in separate timelines. I think that there has been a lot of work on the IDW comics and Sonic Prime to make sure that becomes cannon because Tangle was mentioned in Sonic Frontiers so it is possible she might make an appearance in the next Sonic game.

For real. IDW can be true since it’s been directly acknowledged and referenced by Sega and official Sonic lore media; i.e Sonic Frontiers. But Prime doesn’t work based on its story, world, and the fact that it breaks Sega’s story mandates for the series. And where would Dark Brotherhood fit? I hate the cop out: “the end of the timeline” garbage. Not everything fits, but a good chunk of it can.

We are currently heading to Frontiers. Ian was Frontiers writer and helps Sega with the Lore when he says its Canon he means it.

Shadow AKA the S word in one of the iconic Sonic characters in the entire series with an interesting back story. He was just a malicious creation from Robotnik himself, and was simply found in a pyramid. He was of course originally designed as a villain, but would soon help out Sonic and his friends. His back story can be fun and all, but can be emotional as well. He is definitely one of the most important characters because he is Canon. But there have been different versions of the Canon, and they still might be more. I do wonder what other secrets he still has that people still haven't found out about. My issue is that a writer can say a fallacy and just believe themselves to be true and they think that’s just the final say. Nothing concrete truly ties Prime to be “canon” purely based on the words of someone who is endorsed by Sega but not entirely acknowledged within the context of the lore. IDW has been directly referenced to be canon so we have proof of connection. Prime’s lore is too loose, and while there are references to past media that doesn’t confirm it to be canon simply because of referential material. By that logic the writers of Sonic X could’ve said that their story was canon without having any real grounding the established continuity. Sonic Prime also fights the established rules for the series mandated by Sega themselves to keep their preferred characterizations and world consistent. And Knuckles being at Green Hill because of his development in Frontiers isn’t a connecting factor as Knuckles was likely going to be a part of the main cast regardless of what happened in the Frontiers or not. Knuckles literally isn’t allowed to leave Angel Island unless Sega deems fit considering the stories’ events. If it’s canon, then it can only be a part of its own timeline where Sonic is much weaker, slower, has no maturity or development as in IDW or Frontiers and the series can follow its own rules and consistencies without truly being connected to the larger chronology.

Headcanon: Shadow acts aloof and anti social, so no one else is physically hurt indirectly by his own actions. Presumely, he does get annoyed when others join up with him, because that puts him at odds with his goal of protecting everyone. And if he gets too attached to others, he can be compromised, if someone gets kidnapped. I can imagine, that he doesn't wish to experience to lose someone he dearly loves again. As for giving others a beating up to characters like Sonic and Knuckles, he knows that they can stomach his punches so to speak.

My guess is that prime will make links to different dimensions through some kind of interaction with the paradox prism like the modern dimension or the boom dimension classic dimension or even the movie dimension, this would make the whole timeline connect and make sense and even make a sonic the hedgehog into the hedgehog verse possible, it would also clear up the whole is classic sonic from the past or another dimension thing if done right.

I really, REALLY, do not want Sonic's ongoing future to be co-written by the people behind Sonic Prime (a series that portrays Sonic as some foolhardy screwup that everyone gets mad at). Sega of Japan/Sonic Team nor Tailstube has confirmed that IDW comics are canon to the mainline. So far only Tangle who was referenced in Frontiers both JPN and ENG as well as Jewel has been confirmed to be canon to the gameverse.

I dont understand why people don't like sonic prime? Or why they are so concerned about it being canon or not?? I think its pretty safe to say that they are probably pulling some sort of marvel move with alternate universes to tie in all of the scattered lore. Which I think at this point makes the most sense. All my friends seem to really like sonic prime. Im a SA fan, and I have friends who are fans of the classic games and I have a friend who just got into the sonic fandom through the movie, and Sonic frontiers. And all of us love this show. Too many people out here bein butt hurt over nothin. Sonic prime probably has some of the best characterizations of the cast that we have seen in a looooong time. I am in full support of this being cannon.

The reason why i feel that Sonic Prime isn't canon: 1. Sonic was never this "hugs everyone he just met" kind of person. The only thing you can get from him is a "thumbs up". He was never open about his feelings neither. 2. Too many missing characters. For example Cream & Cheese and her mother Vanilla. Amy's best friend is Cream and they even live close to each other that IDW comics also shown numerous time. 3. What the hell is with Green Hill Zone? I'd rather take Sonic Battle's map,Emerald Town any day. 4. Rouge was never that close to Sonic's gang. Only maybe to Knuckles just to flirts or annoys him and be close to the Master Emerald. I guess she had to choose them now that Shadow is not available because they are not friends anymore.

I really don't mind shadow doing this for maria. on one hand yes he left his past behind him in his game but it was maria and Gerald's words that gave shadow the strength to fight black doom or devil doom. and shadow was created as a way for immortality to cure maria but she died thinks this and gun which leads to shadow wanting revenge. by nature shadow isn't a bad guy he saves rouge even though he has amnesia and remember nothing of her or anyone else mainly do to being made as a way to help maria. maria has always been shadows light that was the thing in sa2 when maria wanted shadow to protect humanity and give them chance even though they killed her and kept shadow locked up and blamed shadow for the ark being raided yet even with that shadow went to work for gun for a year confirmed by sonic o6. marias wish and him being made to cure her has always been shadows good side goal without that shadow would've became what gun feard a weapon as garld also wanted shadow to destroy the world and humanity for revenge it's even revealed in shadows game garld messed with shadows memory which is why shadow forgot marias wish in sa2 intell the end. shadow may have left his past behind him but that doesn't change what shadow was created to be a cure and a weapon shadow has no friends and is viewed as heartless couse that's what a weapon mainly be while he's always their to protect the world and others do to his connection with maria. thats the reason for o6 "if the world chooses to become my enemy I'll fight like I've always have ". as a reference to him being a weapon that was made to fight and destroy but he used that motivation to protect rouge and omega. that was the main point of the hero and dark forms from shadows game. without Maria's wish shadow mainly wants nothing but vengeance and destruction yet do to it shadow fights for justice and peace to protect the world and others. dark shadow releases or amplifies shadows inner chaos do to his chaos energy comeing from black doom and his pure weapon part while hero shadow releases or amplifies shadows inner spirit couse shadow was made to be a cure and to help maria and the world. if shadow truly left his past behind him then what would happen he'll be heartless like his boom showing and wouldn't care about anything but destroying and fighting like the metal virus he wouldn't care about anyone or anything couse he would have no reason to so I'm not surprised by boom shadow or sonic forces shadow couse shadow would just be bouncing back and forth between being good or evil. dark shadow and hero shadow where litterly a ☯️ to complete shadows wuji two full opposites that fights couse their opposites yet complete each other and can become the other shadow being the wuji couse he's nothing rather someone searching for warmth for a reason rather it be going down dark shadows black hearted evil path or hero shadows brave hearted hero path the 2 can't exist without the other their was even a them song that had black and white or white and black on it. that's just my thoughts on it

I like this idea of idw,sonic prime and the games being canon. But. I believe in a way to explain a little more lore. Sonic x needs to be canon. To explain that Eggman is from another world and is living and has become a part of sonics world. And shadow was made in Eggmans home world. And Eggman while in the final episodes of sonic x took shadow with him and went back with the others to sonics world. And the sonic heroes starts. But I'm not sure about the game shadow the hedgehog but because Eggman said in frontiers about the black arms they can just say that he found geralds work on shadow and learned about them. In other words the game shadow the hedgehog not being canon and maybe bring the black arms in a future game Ps. Sonic x needs to be canon to explain where sonic adventure 1 and 2 take place

Well looks like Sega isn't done with completely trashing Shadows as a char! Throw this new lore in with what happened with him during The Metal Virus and I'd say he's about half way there! But we will have to wait and see of course, but I don't have high hope for the second most popular char of the franchise! Note: Im not trying to trash the writer here. Ian is a great writer, but Sega is in charge of what is published. If they want to say kill Shadow off, purely for example, then Ian or another writer would not only have to make that make sense but make it happen in whatever he is writing for them at the time.

I mean green hill is in every sonic game so its not that far fetched to assume that's a location they are frequently in. As far as chaos sonic it was def weird he didn't maybe make a reference to metal sonic, but it doesn't necessarily say that he never met metal sonic. I know there are weird inconsistencies but to me if they said something like "Sonic met knuckles in emerald hill" or something that straight up retcons events that happened in games, then it cant work at all.

@@kendraroth1276 I know, I just find it confusing how stuff like Sonic heroes has Shadow comming to terms with his amnesia and realizing that he's fine without them. And then in Shadow the hedgehog, he suddenly does care and is also a total edge lord when previously, he was more of a stoic. That and stuff like how Sticks the badger was referenced in sonic frontiers, but we only saw her in the Boom universe. The timeline isn't confusing, but the lore is.
