My great aunt knew I was a drummer so she asked me if I wanted her son's old drum from back when he was in the school band. "Of course"( ! ) I replied. So I go to the closet and spy a black hardshell case and pull it out. It was what Ludwig called the "UFO" setup and case which also included a stand and a Gladstone practice pad. I had one already from MY days in the school band, so I figured that the snare was probably the same as mine which was a cheap-o steel and chrome plated Supraphonic knock-off. So I open the case and see this snare with a matte finish and original heads that looked like new. So I tuned it and started running through some snare exercises. The sound was FAR better than mine, and it had some pretty incredible sensitivity and clarity as well. I had no idea what an Acrolite snare was at that time, I just knew that it sounded great and seemed to work well with my style of playing. As I was looking it over, I noticed a stamp on the inside of the shell. Upon closer inspection I could see that the stamp read "April 1964". And THAT's how I acquired my first vintage snare. w00t!!!

1. Copper 2. Brass 3. Aluminum Ludwig is confusing with their pricing and model organization. If these are all “Acrolites,” shouldn’t they all have the same hardware? I don’t mind the different shell thicknesses; we have to trust that the designers chose the best thickness for each type of alloy to give the characteristic Acrolite response, or maybe to allow for more contrast in tone between them if they were too much alike. (I dunno; I wasn’t on the design team. Maybe the thinner shells are just to keep the cost down, or maybe Aluminum has to be a bit thicker to work well?) I would expect them to be fairly close in price if they are all considered part of the Acrolite line. And I’d expect there to be a significant price difference between Acrolite and Supraphonic lines. I don’t know offhand what that difference is, but Ludwig has caused me numerous attacks of sticker shock. I’m grateful that the drum dept manager of a store that no longer exists once let me unbox a brand new 6.5” Black Beauty so i could tune it as I’d want to use it, and compare it with a Premier 6.5” lacquered brass drum. I spent several hours experimenting with tuning on both drums before buying the significantly less expensive Premier drum. It sounded and felt unquestionably better. The only reason it took so long to realize that was I had to overcome certain reputation-derived prejudices and expectations. I had to wrap my head around the Holy Grail of snare drums being bested by the drum that the shop wanted to get rid of in order to finish their association with the Premier company (it was the last Premier drum the shop ever bought and sold). I love my 2000-ish Classic Maple 13/16/24 kit, and my 1969 5.5” Supraphonic, which gets the most gig use these days. But Ludwig prices are just goofy.

Interesting notion to go with a thinner shell, which should give a bit less mass to the drum versus a 6.5 Black Beauty/Bronzephonic, which will, in my opinion, give a somewhat lower (or "fatter" in drum terms) fundamental note to the shell. This is a characteristic of the Acrolite that I have played for years (I also have a COB Super 400, Bronzephonic, 70's Supra to compare). The drums sound great to my ears, all three. Ludwig makes the best snare drums, in my opinion.

I realize that I'll likely tick a lot of people off with my comments relative to Ludwig and their revered snares. They sound amazing... there is no doubt. I'm also all about capitalism, and companies should be able to charge whatever the market will bear. However... the only difference between these drums is the material, the strainer and the badge. The lugs are identical. The hoops are identical. With this said... it it really justified to charge a $200-$270 premium for a different metal type (aluminum vs. Brass/Copper)? I mean it's not like you're going from pot metal to gold here. Also... these don't have the provenance of a Black beauty, yet cost nearly the same price. That doesn't pass the sniff test in my opinion. Would you rather pay $630 for an Acrobrass (1mm shell thickness), or $710 for a Black Beauty (1.2mm shell thickness)? You'll be able to sell the BB for some good coin in 30 years, because it will retain it's value. These.... likely not. I guess I don't get it. Acrolite is by far the best bang for the buck out of the snares in this comparison. Good luck on these, Ludwig.
@jonhattanrai3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree.
@vincentbuonora84773 жыл бұрын
imho I do not get worrisome about say material or thickness. Let your ears determine your choice. It is not thickness for example that makes a violin valuable. The Black Beauty is in its own class for design and sound. The acros are professional quality and sound in their own niche. Prices in past were really great but Ludwig realized the market will recognize quality. I still would pay for the Acro because I like it’s uniqueness. If you are a trader then the Black Beauty may be an investment….but most of us buy a drum because we love to play on it now and not worry about tomorrow. Thanks

Differences in how these shells need to be molded into shape might justify a difference in price.

@@Assimilator702 What I mean is they may have to have separate machines for different kinds of metal, some of which may cost more to operate than others. Bronze for instance can't really be forged like steel can, so I would assume they would need different equipment for that.
