I was interested to see how much higher our success rate was at Whiskeytown we didn’t try snubbers and still did good took the motor out of gear only once and the speed difference was minimal if we went to neutral on the kicker so I’m thinking some other variable is in play. All part of the fascination of Kokanee fishing Tight lines

Definitely put the kicker motor in neutral while keeping the boat under control with the bow mounted trolling motor.

Do not stop the boat.

With you on that seems like a constant pressure is required and hope for a good hook set. When we fished at Whiskey Town we had a 90% success rate. The Kokanee were much more aggressive
@vjmotano8358 ай бұрын
I don’t touch any motors when hooking up. I may turn the kicker all the way to the side to circle the fish. Then as soon as I land it the kicker is straightened back and my other pole is still active

From the information I’ve been getting and watching other anglers it’s the slow steady retrieve that makes the most difference in successful landing the fish and a quick netting. Thanks for your input Tight lines

I Kokanee troll at 1 - 1.3 miles per hour with my 9.9 kicker. I catch limits more often than not and I never slow down while landing a fish. I do, on a rare occasion, have days when I lose a lot of fish during the fight and could never attribute to anything other than bad luck. I will try going to neutral the next time this occurs and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for all the info you shared on this video.

Thanks for the comment. The early season fishing is particularly challenging at least for me the last trip we went to neutral on the kicker leaving the electric to hold corse at a slower speed 1.1 and added snubbers. Our ratio went up to 80% from 25% last trip but not enough fish to give it a true test. And there has to be a factor added for experience. I’m sure yours makes a world of difference. It’s frustrating to loose fish when the fish are so spread out Tight lines.

Great video, can't wait for Melones to really start opening up for the Kokanee bite. My opinion on the technique once you hook a Kokanee is to keep the boat in gear. But then again I try not to troll faster than 1.3 mph. Im kinda surprised you caught a Kokanee going 1.8 mph. Tight lines!
@fairplayfishing10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment I’ll be back next week and give the 1.3 speed a try. It’s going to be an exciting year as the water warms up, but even with fewer bites, watching the fish come out of the water multiple times is a thrill. Tight lines.
@billmacaras41469 ай бұрын
Leave the boat in gear. You want to keep pressure on the fish. I use a snubber as well. Stopping the boat defeats the purpose of the snubber. If the boat is out of gear, the fish can more easily put slack in the line and spit the hook. Where as if the boat is moving, there will always be pressure on the fish.
@fairplayfishing9 ай бұрын
I’m coming around to the merits of your approach. Slow and steady retrieval seems the most effective approach although the seems to be a seasonal change in the aggression level of Kokanee as the water temperature increases the more committed they seem on hitting the bait and a better hook set. Be interesting to see if others find this to be true. Thanks for the comment Tight lines
@ajayfay9 ай бұрын
I fish for Kokanee 99%. And nothing makes more sense than just keeping pressure on the fish. The issue in this video is two parts- one part that the fish have super soft mouths this time a year. Also, the guy’s reeling in the fish are way too slow. You need to keep constant pressure on that fish, and you need to keep the rod tip in the water and don’t stop reeling. And even then you better be ready to loose fish. The pros loose Kokanee as well. So, just keep at it. Getting them on the line is the first half of the battle.

I’ve only fished with a limited number of Kokanee anglers, but I don’t believe any of them cut off the kicker engines. I’ll pay more attention from now on. Now with trolling for big kings in the Sac Riv… that’s a different story. I lost three kings each time the engine was cutoff or speed slowed down. Afterwards, we made sure to keep the constant speed until the salmon is boated. Thank you for the video! 👍👍👍

Great to have your feedback I’m thinking about using rubber snubers like the old school approach to increase the catch rate. I’ll keep you posted.

Lead Core? What? 5-10 feet deep? Controversy ? Heck I have a float tube. I know nothing about no stinking boats!! :)
@fairplayfishing9 ай бұрын
Float tube is the beginning of a boat. 😂 It has been 5’ to 15’ in depth but on the trip last week my buddy on another boat found a school at 30’ off the launch at Glory Hole so they might be starting to school up and off that point is a place tubers could target. As a note the hybrid led core I use is supposed to descend 7’ for each color. Best of luck tight lines.
@davidpickens69169 ай бұрын
Thanks. I do have a pontoon float tube, but I have not run that in a few years. I have electric motor where could actually do some trolling. I do need a new battery though.$ .... i'll have to get out to Tuttletown before they move out. Last three months I've been skunked, trying to catch trout finally picked up one last week there at Heron point, fishing off the shore. During that time I've been catching a lot of bass and two weeks ago I started catching bluegill they've come into the shallows.

Got out on the tube this morning: pink fly tipped with shoepeg corn, sink fly line. Either side of the big parking lot, including the big parking lot around Tuttletown. Five bass... I can't get away from the bass. 😂😂😂

I don’t understand why some guys leave there extra rods right in back of the transom,in holders were there in way of your landing a fish,and agree on taking the engine out of gear,or idle your engine to help get the soft mouth Kokanee to the boat.Always a good idea to point tip in water if they try to jump next too the boat.
@fairplayfishing10 ай бұрын
I’m going to take my boat out tomorrow and try out the snubbers as an additional cushion for the soft mouth on the Kokanee doesn’t help when they’re so fat and feisty, but it sure adds to the fun Thanks for the comment Tight lines

Flurocarbon leader you end up with about 160’ of line out by the time you get to the backer which in mono. A little pricy but can be the most productive presentation. Especially in the spring time when the fish are close to the surface. It’s hard to run two at the same time without tangling. Thanks for watching.
