How much did the Catholic Mass change after Vatican II? Even when the New Mass (Novus Ordo) is celebrated in the best way possible, much is still missing. How much change is too much?
The vast majority of bishops at Vatican II voted for the revision to the Mass, but did they expect a total deconstruction? Vatican II said 'Let there be no innovations unless the good of the Church genuinely and certainly requires it'.
The Consilium (those charged with reforming the Mass) went on to change, remove, and add prayers to the Mass with the idea that everything is up for debate and anything can be changed. The secretary of the Consilium, Father Annibale Bugnini said 'Peripheral changes are not enough, there has to be a radical restoration.'

Regarding the second episode being removed, why can you not just remove the 10 second song clip from the documentary? I ask because KZbin is a huge avenue to reach people, and removing one song is worth it to get it back on KZbin. Is that not an option? I have been blessed to be a daily communicant for more than twenty years and in all this time, I don't recall even one Mass where any priest "made up [his] own stuff here and there." And in case you are interested, my experience that are different from yours has been predominantly in the Diocese of Arlington and the Archdioceses of Baltimore and Washington. Though in my travels the Masses I have attended all over the country are not as you describe them to be.

Because from personal experience of being a daily communicant for a quarter of a century, not once in 25 years have I ever experienced the atrocities you describe. I’m with you - I would not only react with disgust - I would be even more revolted at the irreverence of it all if a priest were to do what you describe. But that has never been my personal experience, and I dare say that has not been the experience of millions of Catholics around the world. Rather, at every Mass I have attended because I am responding to Our Lord’s invitation to be in full communion with Him, Our Lord Jesus Christ has humbled Himself in the miracle of the Eucharist where simple bread and wine becomes His sacred Body and Blood. So, I don’t know about you, but I am a Catholic, and thus I will not protest against the Church that is protected by the Holy Spirit because Our Lord’s promise in Matthew 16 is true: “the gates of hell will not prevail.” Thus, the best any of us can do is give thanks (eucharistia in Greek) to Our Lord Jesus Christ who will humble Himself still on every altar, at every Mass, in every Catholic church around the world today - to become present to us in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. I could be wrong, and I am on many things, but it seems to me that criticizing the Novus Ordo reveals a problem - not with the liturgical changes of Vatican II - but with Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself who is Emmanuel - God present to us in the Most Holy Eucharist at every Novus Ordo Mass I have attended since 1997. Therefore, keep yourself from full communion with the Church if you must. But when you stand before Jesus in judgment, you will have some “ ‘splaining” to do. So will, I of course. So will all of us. When we stand before Jesus in judgment, may we all have the words of the tax collector in Luke 18 who simply prays, “be merciful to me, Lord a sinner.” Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist and of the Church, intercede for us. St. Michael, protect us.

try taking your TLM Missal to an NO Mass during Lent during the week. Most readings and prayers match up, however, with very stark edits for the NO. Guess what is removed? Sin, our inclination to evil, and FASTING. So many changes. Our sins are now faults.

Why did you cover the preface when in the new mass they added a lot more of them,? And some of the new ones are great, and if your trying to say it cant be chanted anymore i think you can still chant the preface. And you can still make the asperges on sundays instead of the penitential act and sing the asperges, although I think it would be best if both could be used in the same mass. Thanks for the film, it helped me a lot and made me fall even more in love with our old liturgie!

You're right that the preface can still be chanted. So we took out the chant *notation* because as Pope Paul VI admitted, when making the spoken language the principle language of the Mass: 'we will lose a great part of the incomparable gregorian chant'. This is because the English words cannot simply be mapped onto the original chants with different syllables and emphasis. The chant is written for Latin. We still kept the word 'Preface' to communicate that this section was not removed.

@@rtyria I see it now. I was looking at the priest’s “Domine non sum” which was completely removed. The sheet didn’t show the second confiteor that can be recited or the absolution that would come before the “Ecce Agnus Dei…” in the Vetus Ordo. Funny I didn’t notice it, but here’s a thing of note that missing this reminded me of, in the NO the communication of our lord is not bifurcated as it is in the TLM. Which I can’t remember if it was addressed or not in the documentaries but this is a HUGE difference as it attempts to remove the distinction between the priest and lay.

Well, officially the Asperges is still in the Missal, but the usage is different from Vetus Ordo. In vetus ordo, it's done on Sung and Solemn Sunday Mass before the Mass begin and is a separate rite from the Confiteor, but in novus ordo, the Asperges will have to replace the Confiteor as it is counted as one of four options for Actus Pænitentialis in novus ordo, which usually only be done on the Resurrection Sunday.

I don't think this is very precise, I don't accuse you for having any bad intention in creating this, but many of the things you point to as changes are things that are intended or easily possible for use in the new mass as well. Examples: -All mass propers are supposed to be read or sung in the NO (Gregorian chant is recommended by VII, so you can infer that the gregorian propers should be used) -The nicene creed is here replaced by the apostles creed. -In the Kyrie, it is completely possible to sing the kyries and christe three times each -In the Gloria, you write that "peace to all men" is replaced by "peace to all people", but "pax hominibus" means both, so there is no change -It is explicitly intended for both gregorian chant and latin to be used in the new rite, as stated by sacrosanctum concilium. So removing the neumic notation of the priests intro to gloria, and also for such as the ite and credo is inaccurate -When the priests repeats the Dominus non sum dignus, and when the server repeats the Confiteor, yes these are removals, but not exactly the same as the removal of the psalms (which is lamentable) -The prefatio can easily be sung in gregorian chant by the priest, and it is intended so There are probably more nitpicky examples but this is just what I caught with one view through. My point in making this list is not to discredit the old mass, but to seek the true dignity of the celebration of the new. It is sad that the new mass is accredited with liturgical abuse and lackluster liturgy, when in reality this is only a result of the dignity of the celebration.

On your critique points - Gregorian is far from the norm and in the TLM the propers are sung by the choir and said by the priest; the latter has been removed - The shorter apostolic creed is now a much used option - The missal only provides options to do 3x2, 3x3 is not there - The change from 'peace to men' to 'peace to people' is a change in the official translation; this is also a global change in the sense that many languages have done a similar change. This is done to promote the removal of boundaries between men and women in the NO. - No one uses Gregorian, the ideal way to celebrate the NO is not very representative and not fit for a comparison. - - 'can' and 'intended'. It's again not the norm, though I guess somewhat common. I do actually find it strange he removed the neumes for that The NO allows for a lot of simplifications, which is one of the biggest critiques

@@RedWolf5 That's not the way I see it -- not a disgrace at all -- but a means by which Our Lord Jesus's fractured Church might be one (cf. John 17:21). For the Holy Spirit to touch hearts, humility is required, and that is what happened in the liturgical reforms sixty years ago. Humility is still required of us all. As Catholics, either we trust that the Holy Spirit inspired the Bishops at Vatican II or we don't -- and and that we witness a miracle at every Paul VI Mass where bread and wine become the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ -- or we don't. In forty years (or in the year 2062) at the 100th anniversary of Vatican II, I predict the Church might revisit some of the changes from Vatican II because for any major council in the Church's 2,000 year history, it takes at least three or for generations of people to understand fully how the Holy Spirit was guiding the Church at a particular moment. We are only 60 years out from Vatican II. And, the Church has seen much worse in our long history! Through it all, She still produces saints through her sacred liturgies, of which the Extraordinary Form and Novus Ordo are only two of the 26 rites within the Catholic Church.

Do you think it's a bit dishonest to color out the things that were taken out, but not include things that were added? For example, the first reading. Also, the preface still exists, as I'm sure you know, but the graphic seems to insinuate it was removed. Josef Cardinal Ratzinger's words from his 1999 introduction to The Spirit of the Liturgy would be helpful here: "We might say that in 1918, the year that Guardini published his book [The Spirit of the Liturgy], the liturgy was rather like a fresco. It had ben preserved from damage, but it had been almost completely overlaid with whitewash by later generations. In the Missal from which the priest celebrated, the form of the liturgy that had grown from its earliest beginnings was still present, but, as far as the faithful were concerned, it was largely concealed beneath instructions for and forms of private prayer. The fresco was laid bare by the Liturgical Movement and, in a definitive way, by the Second Vatican Council. For a moment its colors and figures fascinated us. But since then the fresco has been endangered by climatic conditions as well as by various restorations and reconstructions. In fact, it is threatened with destruction, if the necessary steps are not taken to stop these damaging influences. Of course, there must be no question of its being covered with whitewash again, but what is imperative is a new reverence in the way we treat it, a new understanding of its message and its reality, so that rediscovery does not become the first stage of irreparable loss."

I will say, as much as I respect the work of Mass of the Ages, not all of this section was exactly right. For example, the Asperges is definitely still an option that can be utilized, though in the video they tear it out. The Communion verse was also torn out of the page. There is 100% a Communion verse at every Novus Ordo Mass, whether it's formally intoned or not! And the Preface was replaced with musical staff. Right... what's the difference? There is a Preface in the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo Mass, if the priest chants it, they even retain the same tones. 🤔 So while I know this part was put together as more of a shocker I wish the details were more respected and clear. Having read and studied both liturgies very closely, I know the differences very intimately. There's no reason to stretch the truth in favor of the Traditional Latin Mass if the truth is already in its corner (which I believe it is!)!
