New Metro train enters customer service

Customers are travelling on the new Metro train fleet for the first time in an historic moment for public transport in North East England.
The first new Metro train entered service at 11.04am on Wednesday 18 December, operating between Pelaw and Monkseaton via Newcastle city centre.
It marks the start of a new era for the Metro system - transforming comfort, quality and reliability for customers.
The £362m project is the biggest in Metro’s history.
Designed by customers following an extensive customer consultation which resulted in over 23,000 responses, the new Metro trains boast linear seating, mobile charging points, climate control, 44 digital CCTV cameras, battery technology, and new accessibility standards, including an automatic sliding step at each set of doors to allow for seamless boarding.
The first new train will initially run from Monday to Friday as part of a phased roll out.
Stadler, the Swiss train manufacturer, is building 46 new Metro trains for Nexus. Two thirds of that order is now complete and 13 new trains have been successfully delivered, with 25 more to come in the new year.
